Rumors suggest that Xbox is planning to release a new console later this year, but could it be a cheaper, budget-friendly version of the Series X?
Xbox released its current generation consoles, the Series X and S, in late 2020. The Series X is larger and more powerful, while the Series S is a sleeker, less powerful budget option.
However, as time goes on, the Series S has begun to struggle with some of the more graphically demanding titles.
Therefore, it may be time for Xbox to address its budget console – and there would be no better way to do that than by releasing a cut-price Series X!
A Budget Xbox Series X Seems Likely for 2024
Leaks from early 2024 revealed the first images of a white Xbox Series X with no disc drive.
The color, lack of disc drive and a slightly improved heatsink, are the only differences between this leaked console and the standard Series X. Other than that, it is identical to the model we know.
If the leak is correct, we believe that Xbox could release this digital Series X later this year. It would be a perfect upgrade for the Series S and would also likely be cheaper than the Series X.
To support this point further, the leaked documents from the Microsoft vs. FTC court case revealed that Microsoft has, at the very least, planned a digital Series X.
This leaked Xbox’s lack of a disc drive will make the console cheaper to produce. Hopefully, this will also allow Xbox to sell it for significantly cheaper than the standard Series X.
While we wouldn’t expect it to be as cheap as the $300 Series S, we believe this new console should be significantly less expensive than the $500 Series X. In our opinion, $400 seems like a probable price tag.
Overall, a cheaper model of the Xbox Series X seems likely for a 2024 release. Not only do the leaks suggest a digital Series X has already been manufactured, but Xbox would also want to make up ground on Sony and release a competitor to the supposedly upcoming PS5 Pro this holiday season.
Stay tuned for any announcements from Xbox about its upcoming hardware. If we are lucky, Microsoft could announce Series X with no disc drive at the June 2024 Xbox Showcase.
