Sonic Frontiers is enjoyable for the most part, but it's easy to understand why a lot of people would not like it, as it is full of many issues and problems that should not be there
Hope to see a critique on sonic superstars
This was a good video. However, I wish you had examined and analyzed the game from another point of view, namely "How well does Sonic Frontiers succeed as a sequel to Ikaruga?".
9:40 dude Sonic interacts with terrain in the weirdest fucking ways in this game! It's almost as bad as '06 where he would snap onto the ground beneath him. I can't believe this is an official product sometimes, the whole thing really feels amateurish at points. Sonic Team's game design is wildly outdated yet somehow worse than 3D games from 20+ years ago.
Can somebody tell what sonic fan game that is?
To be honest i hate sonic frontiers and it killed sonic for me in my opinion and sonic superstars is a scam and i wish sega cared about the franchise again take Black knight for example you can tell they cared back then
Frontiers is a failure of a Sonic game
Idk why I'm only seeing this video now (a year after) but here I am.
It's sad to see you didn't like it. Let's hope the next mainline title can improve on all the things you mentioned in the review, because as much as I love this game, you bring up some very good points.
splash dash, says hi
I mean, I thought the game was fine, but even I agree that the hardcore defenders are really toxic. Normally I don't like losely using the term "toxic positivity" mainly because I feel like along side the "Don't ask questions just consume products" phrase it's one of those terms that have been missapprorpiated into shorthand for "stop liking what I don't like". But in this scenario yeah, this hostile mob mentality towards any negative criticism of frontiers fits that term to the T. And the real funny thing is, these are probably some of the same people who criticize the Nintendo fanboys for having a cultlike group think criticism not allowed mentality whenever someone criticizes Nintendo's games and/or their buisness practices(Especially when it came to the discourse regarding the Mario movie) when these very toxic Sonic fans are guilty of the exact same thing. This should go without saying but; Sega is no less immune to criticism or scrutiny than any other game company. And just because they've been the butt of the joke ever since the Dreamcast folded, doesn't mean they need to be coddled whenever they the slightest bit of negative criticism arises.
Look, I agree with everything you say on the video… But that one part with the dude that made an unnecessary reference to Sonic 06 with the "heh, remember when a human kissed sonic LMAO!" on their review?
I'm sorry but… he got what he deserved (Not to a high level of harassment, but still; play with fire, get burned)
Subbed. Great video. Honestly shocked people think this gane is even renotely good.
This really aged well lol especially with how lazy the updates were. They hate sonic, love yakuza
I really think if this game wasn't called 'Sonic' Frontiers, it'd be rated far lower. The Sonic PR is actually mental especially on twitter that it makes people give leeway to a lot of, in my opinion, inexcusable things like, as you said, the controls and feel of the game which are quintessential to any platformer let alone Sonic. That Cyberspace feel has me very worried for Shadow generations.
The spindash's addition gives me a bit of hope Sonic team understands what the core Sonic gameplay is though
The real question is do you respect people who genuinely love and like this game? Not gonna lie it seems like you have a problem when people like this game

I don't need to imagine. DMC2 exists, after all.
Your review sums up how I feel about this product. Even after a year since this came out. Especially after it’s DLC that I do not like one bit.
And fan base still how it is.
I really, really like Frontiers, but even I admit I like the IDEA of the game more than I like playing it. While its movement systems and speed make it still more fun than other open world games- which I see as mindless boring checkbox gameplay between bosses and story where you're just completing tasks because ape brain say complete task feel good- there are serious issues with the game.
Thank you for this video, you put a voice to problems I've never really been able to distill down to words outside of a vague "this feels bad" or "oh god I don't think that's supposed to happen"
THANK YOU. It's fine if people enjoyed the game, but the amount of overwhelmingly positive opinions I've seen is baffling to me. Every time I see something like "this is ideal 3D Sonic," or "I'm so glad this is the template for Sonic games going forward" I feel a little queasy.

Nah, Flynn insists that the IDW comic is meant to be canon along with the games. I personally hate that, but whatever.
Either way, W-O-W, I can't believe I found someone else that actually remembers Knuckles's role being completely defunct as of Adventure 1. If anything, I've always thought the damn island was supposed to stay grounded ever since then.
I watch that toxicity section more times than I should,Sonic fans get so worked up about what other people think or say, that it makes me feel sad.The fanbase has been burned so many times, they can't let it go and just like things without a worry.
I really enjoyed Frontiers, but I know that it's not flawless and not up to the quality standard compared to games in and before the same year.
never really seen anyone talk positively about this game before , imo the gameplay loop was very addicting, most open world games are boring because you have to travel to each point but having sonics speed made traveling to each point or objective a lot of fun and the gameplay had enough variety that I never got bored
Wow i was really enjoying your penny's big breakaway video, and excitedly clicked seeing that you made a critique on sonic frontiers, as it's one of the most fascinating recent games for me that I love discussing with people – before that intro card just ensured I never visit this channel again, it's so full of itself and pompous, jesus christ. Rant incoming, but if you decide to read it, please do so to the end, I promise I'm not writing this in bad faith, let's say i'm simply offering some critique of my own :p
First off, "objective reviews do not exist" who made you the arbiter of that, if everything is subjective? Of course full objectivity is impossible to achieve, and how a game makes you feel is entirely up to your subjective values indeed, but game design is something that can be pointed out and discussed in the realm of fact and objectivity. Lemme give an easy example:
In your Penny's Big Breakaway video, you criticized how the yoyo's lock-on sometimes was poorly contextualized, and snapped to things you didn't want it to, often causing you to take an undeserved hit. If you can please tell me, what's so subjective about that? Isn't it an objectively poor design decision, that, now that you've made the developers be aware of, can be improved? Subjectively, you can feel in a milion ways about the lock-on, you may love it, you may despise it, or anything inbetween. But objectively, those moments you showcased, shown the flaw in it's design. Isn't it worth pointing out and discussing?
Objectivity has nothing to do with something being good or bad, nor does it have anything to do with being emotionless – "if you want "objectivity", go read a wikipedia page" as if that is all that pointing out a fact can result in? Just dryly reading it out and having no conclusion, no thought behind it? Surely you see how silly that is, right?
Implying being objective is impossible in game/media analysis does great disservice to the meticulous thought and effort people put into creating a well thought out piece of art. Do you think writers don't want their story to be logically cohesive, to have as many as possible be immersed in the worlds they create? Do you think game designers just haphazardly insert mechanics and enemies because it's all subjective and there's no such thing as objectivity in game design? Please.
If it's "all just opinions", what's the value in having a discussion or analysis? All you can possibly do is just spout "i like this" "i didn't like this" ad infinitum. Objectivity simply means whatever argument you're making is based on some fact. A fact like an enemy of-screening you, or a ramp being badly placed, or a mechanic not meshing well together. How you feel about those things is absolutely valid as well! It's just that, two things can exist together…
To say there's no objectivity in your video, would imply it's in no way based on fact, which would only be possible if you were lying the whole way through, or not even talking about anything to do with the game. If you want to do that, be my guest, just don't call it a critique.
Also the controls are amazingly bad for the Cyberstage levels. What makes a decent speed burst button for long stretches of open world becomes a horrible replacement for the boost in stages that were clearly designed for it.
