Ok let's try this explanation:
• The egg shaped "UFO" which was reverse engineered alien technology and operated by humans (to make it seem like an Alien spacecraft operated by Aliens), were conducting a secret experiment until they were spotted.
• After which the Humans (mocked/dressed up, acting in Alienesque manner to deceive the Public) tried to escape and using the secret technology "disappeared" (or rather became invisible) in front of the Sherrif's eyes (e.g. cloaking technology).
• Or their (humans') apparent weird shape and walk was related/caused (as possible side effects) as a result of the secret experiment/technology (e.g. high energy distorted (heated up) the environment or worse, radiation changed their body makeup/shape/condition)…
