You shouldn't go by other people's thoughts on video games. Better or worse is an opinion (thought).
People don't have the same thoughts.
If you're interested in a game, watch some YouTube gameplay. See if it looks like something you'd like.
Other people's thoughts are absolutely meaningless.
I often find minself really enjoying games that are considered garbage in the gaming consciousness and most of the consensus stems from "reliable reviewers'" opinions. I have stopped listening to reviews all together since it often feels like you need validation from other people to be able to enjoy a game nowadays. There is no space for ok games now. It is either a masterpiece or trash, with no in between. Reviewers are useful as a general guideline but in the end it should be your own prerogative wether you want to play a game or not. Don't let others tell you what you can enjoy.
For some games too user reviews are becoming unreliable. It just sucks that we can't get true authentic reviews on whether a game is actually worth playing. People can like bad games, just tell us they're bad and go about your day. Not every new game that comes out is a 10/10 masterpiece.
Yeah, I don't trust videogame reviews or movie reviews. For example, everyone was hyping up Sonic Frontiers and I got excited for it, but when I got it and played it, I was really disappointed since I found the game BORING.
The standard changed bacuse people prioritize graphics over the longevity or content of a game. Also because people became ok with being milked by games even after paying full price for them.

its not just the games quality thats gone down its the whole entertainment industry. movies, shows and games all have taken a huge hit in quality and have been steamrolled by modern day politics that its killing the entire entertainment biz
I was always mixed on reviews but the breaking point for me was cyberpunk 2077, it's one of the most hated video games in history if you ask me, yet I pre-ordered it, played day one and I loved it.
That's when I knew listening to reviews was pointless, virtually every single person on the internet said it's one of the worst games of all time, Even the most credible people such as actman, crowbcat and many others and it's one of my top five favorite games, now I just don't care about other's opinions, if a game looks good I'm going to pre-order it and buy it, reviews don't matter not anymore, even small YouTubers because everyone has their own personal agendas.
I had the same situation with security breach, one of those despised video games of all time, yet I liked it

even youtube reviewers can't be trusted as they also tend to lie to push a narrative.
I dont trust them or essay channels now that everything is so mainstream everyone just pays other people for effort. You got people who go to reddit or other forums with limited game experience to write a script for some essay channel, to either rehash or dump on a game. I only trust gameplay at this point because reviewers have their interests first. Sure they could be honest but with how fragile company egos are that honesty could lead to lack of early access. Which in turn translates to less views and being late to the trends. I stopped listening to them years ago gameplay should be the only thing you trust anymore
Some of your comments are reasons why I don't go to journalist review. One content creator I go watch is Luke Stephens for an indepth review. Him, like very few, go into it with a unbiased, objective view point, and will shit on the game if need be. His policy is, being completely honest through nd through, and tells the devs whenever he gets an early copy of games.

IGN and Kotaku are particularly trash. What’s the point of a game review if I don’t know the opinions and taste of the person reviewing the thing? And why do they choose people that sometimes don’t even like the genre they’re playing? Why do people still watch it in droves?
Kotaku really put out articles about game journalists like them should get praises and recognition instead of criticism because they became more progressive influence to the world, the level of narcissism and self-important that if it's a person I will like to stay away because they can murder you but still claim innocent.

this is why demos and the game services are so important. I would have never fallen in love with avengers had it not been for psn plus because it reviewed bad (its still a bad game imo) but its really fun and one of my favorite games to play after work. I can name countless games like this from game pass on my pc too i love these services lol
These days if you're just relying on mainstream video game media. You gotta read multiple reviews to get a decent pov of a game

Honestly degenerate plays is a blast, highly recommend it 8 out of 10, it's truly a step in the right direction
Totally agree!! Let media cloud my judgement on Gotham knights. I can see glaring issues I have with the game but I’m loving it!

Game magazine reviews have been a load of BS since back in the day when they were actually printed, and they've only gotten worse since they went all online. Now they have reviews written by people who don't even play games.
I thought I wouldn't like gotham knights because of the reviews but I really enjoyed it
