With rumors flying that Resident Evil 9 is on the verge of being revealed, Capcom has confirmed that the next entry in the storied survival horror franchise is now in development.
Development will be led by Resident Evil 7: Biohazard director Koshi Nakanishi, who confirmed the new sequel in the course of talking about the previous game’s mobile release.
“It was really difficult to figure out what to do after [Resident Evil 7],” Nakanishi said. “But I found it, and to be honest it feels substantial. I can’t share any details just yet, but I hope you’re excited for the day I can.”
Nakanishi has a long history with Resident Evil. In addition to Resident Evil 7, which helped revitalize the series in 2017, Nakanishi directed Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D for the Nintendo 3DS as well as the first Resident Evil Revelations game. Nakanishi also served as a designer on Resident Evil 5.
Rumors of a potential Resident Evil 9 reveal have swirled through much of 2024, though Capcom has thus far kept it under wraps. In May, IGN also corroborated reports of Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica remakes. Its most recent releases include the Resident Evil 4 Remake and Resident Evil Village, both of which were included as Game of the Year contenders in their respective years.
In addition to confirming the development of a new Resident Evil, Capcom also provided details on a new Kunitsu-Gami demo and the release date for Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster during its summer showcase. You can find the rest of the biggest games coming in 2024 right here.
