Hold on a second, I just recently realized this might have been a reference! For those not in the know (I wouldn't blame y'all, nobody alive has seen every video on Youtube), there is this one video that has a version of Holding out for a Hero over some Mario gameplay. I'm willing to believe this is more of a coincidence, than an actual reference to that video.
