Apple might’ve only revealed iOS 18 at WWDC in June, but it’s already available to download on your iPhone – as long as you’re brave enough to install the public beta, that is.
As with the iOS 17 public beta, it’s much easier to install the iOS 18 public beta than previous entries in the iOS collection thanks to a handy toggle in the Settings app on your iPhone.
It is worth emphasising, however, that the iOS 18 beta will likely be buggy and is not designed to be used on your primary device at this stage in development. If you’ve got a spare iPhone laying around, go right ahead!
So, if you’re curious and want to test-drive the next big iOS update, here’s how you can install the iOS 18 beta on your iPhone right now.
What you’ll need:
- An iPhone running iOS 16.4 or later
The Short Version
- Sign in with your Apple ID at beta.apple.com.
- Back up your iPhone.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Tap Beta Updates.
- Tap iOS 18 Public Beta.
- Tap Download and Install.
-
Step
1Sign in with your Apple ID at beta.apple.com
The first step in gaining access to the iOS 18 public beta is to enrol on the Apple Beta website. This is a quick process, and only requires you to log in with the same Apple ID you use on your iPhone.
-
Step
2Back up your iPhone
The next step is to back up your iPhone, an important step in case you find iOS 18 too buggy in its current state and want to downgrade. You can’t restore an iOS 18 backup in iOS 17, so it’s worth either backing up to iCloud or, even better, backing up to your PC or Mac.
-
Step
3Open the Settings app
The next step is to open the Settings app on your iPhone.
-
Step
4Tap General
From the Settings app, scroll down and tap General.
-
Step
5Tap Software Update
The next step is to tap Software Update.
-
Step
6Tap Beta Updates
Tap the Beta Updates button – this may take a second to appear while Apple verifies that you’ve got a public beta-associated Apple ID.
-
Step
7Tap iOS 18 Public Beta
From the list of available beta updates, select the iOS 18 Public Beta and tap back in the upper-left to go back to the software update menu.
-
Step
8Tap Update Now
If all has gone to plan, you should now see the iOS 18 Public Beta appear. Simply tap Update Now to download and install the update on your iPhone.
Troubleshooting
If you can’t see the Beta Updates section, it’s likely because your Apple ID hasn’t been enrolled into the Public Beta program. Make sure you log in to beta.apple.com with the Apple ID that’s associated with your iPhone, and try again.
