SanDisk showed off some next-generation storage devices at a recent conference that are the highest-capacity drives we’ve seen yet. The company unveiled an array of new products at the show, including two world’s firsts: an 8TB SD card and a 16TB external SSD. Both products will undoubtedly cost an arm and a leg, but that’s the price we pay, literally, to be on the cutting edge of technology.
SanDisk, owned by Western Digital, unveiled the products at the FMS 2024 conference in Santa Clara, which stands for the Future of Memory and Storage. Though the company’s announcements focused a lot on AI and enterprise storage needs, the consumer products are eye-popping in their capacities. It didn’t offer much info on them, only saying it’s debuting both a 4TB microSDUC card and an 8TB SDUC card made for handheld gaming, phones, cameras, and drones.
The Desk Drive tops out at 8TB currently, and uses a power supply, but hopefully the 16TB will be untethered.

It also unveiled an 16TB external SSD, but said it’s a proof of concept, so it’s unclear when it will arrive. The company just announced an 8TB version of its external Desk Drive (top image) in May, so it’s surprising it’s already able to double its capacity. However, since it’s just a concept, it might not show up until next year some time.
According to TechSpot, SanDisk is also working on a portable 16TB drive, which could be one of the company’s Extreme drives. This is a big deal because the Desk Drive requires the use of a power supply, likely due to its capacity. However, people might be slightly hesitant to buy a 16TB version of that drive, as it’s received a ton of bad press for in-field failures.
