Apple has rolled out new beta versions of its various OS branches for phones, tablets, computers, watches, set-top boxes and AR headsets. Here’s what’s changed.
Apple Intelligence is the headlining feature of iOS 18.1, but there are some growing pains. In particular, there were rendering issues when using the new Siri UI with large Apple CarPlay displays. This should be resolved now.
iOS 18 is also being developed and Apple is on beta 6 right now. This adds changes like Place ID for Apple Maps, “a unique and persistent identifier”. Another change is that if you’re adding your ID to Wallet, you may be asked to snap a photo of it – this is intended to prevent fraud.
Developers for Apple Vision Pro software can test visionOS 2 beta 6. It increases the maximum placement distance between apps to give users more flexibility. Also, compatible apps can now be moved outside of the Compatible Apps folder and be placed alongside apps that were designed for visionOS (long-pinch any icon to enter “edit” mode). And check this out – you can now use game controllers to interact with the system UI.
MacOS Sequoia 15 beta 6 brings various fixes and some good news for people who are tight on storage – the App Store no longer needs double the size of the app as free space for an initial app download and install. You just need the app’s size + a small buffer free.
A stable iOS 18 release is expected in the fall, iOS 18.1 should arrive soon after that.
