Steam Deck is great for 360/PS3 era games, indy titles, boomer shooters, etc. I personally set games at 1600×900, 9 watts, medium-high settings and I get 3+hrs of battery life on all games, all locked at 60 fps. Games like Tomb Raider, Dishonored, Black Ops 2, BioShock Infinite, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2, Fear 3, Batman Arkham City, etc. run perfect. Some games I even turn up to 1440p like Dead Space, Blasphemous, Skyforce Reloaded.. all locked at 60fps. If the Steam Deck had a 900p 90hz 9" OLED display w/freesync the thing would be perfect imo.
Can I play my FO 76 steam PC build that I already play on steam PC or do I have to start a new character on the steam deck ? Also can we use the deck and charge it at same time as playing a game
Steam Deck AAA modern games are perfect at 30FPS, beautiful, smooth and detailed, control response also feels perfect. If you are so egoic you don't like 30FPS, drop a few settings, lock to 40 and your flying. Playing GTA IV on proton experimental currently with the recent enhanced fusion and console graphics mods and wow! Most settings dialled up but placed a 40fps frame cap as I preferred the stability over unlocked – looks and plays incredible. Stop expecting 60+ ultra high in Sandbox games on a handheld and you will not be disappointed.
The complaints are ridiculous considering most PC gamers play low settings at 1080p.
I bought a steam deck in july 2022 and yesterday was playing a game was working great so today 11-19-2023 the steam deck turns on makes the beep but the screen is black.
I have tried the holding buttons to get into storange mode, i tried all the holding buttons whiling turning the system on. Nothing is working
Now the worse part is that my warranty is over and i don't think valve will cover the steam deck or help me so its a $800 paper weight now.
I used it to play games, did nothing to the system. valve should extended the warranty for these type of problems/
bro y u look like Elon Musk
Was not expecting that German lol
The deck has the most beautiful device ever and valve knows what we gamers need…. The other handhelds that use windows have their place but they don't have the community backing it like the steam deck.. This is why I bought the deck
Hi Alex, thanks for the great video!
I have a question and will try to be as straight to the point as possible:
– Even though I am quite experienced in the PC gaming world, I'm quite overwhelmed by all the settings to tinker with on the SteamDeck. Resolution, FSR, change Hz, lock FPS, lower TDP.. Then there's in-game settings.. etc etc.
The question: If I'd like to target 40 fps on any game, what would you recommend to use as a 'standard' guideline to, step by step, get the most battery performance out of the Deck? What should I do first?
It can be so confusing because there are too many combinations.. For example, I can use FSR, but do I lower the in-game framerate to 720p + lower GPU clock, or to 480 without lowering GPU? This is just an example but is there step-by-step plan of action to follow to get a decent optimization in most cases?
Sry for the long message! I love DF's videos, even though I don't understand all of it 🙂
Much love from Netherlands ✌
If only I can get a Steam Deck where the screen isn't damage internally within a week.
“To save power”
Not to improve performance.
40 or 30 is good on a small screen looks good
thanks elon musk
I think the adjustable refresh is fantastic. For games where I can't quite get to a locked 60, I can usually get a locked 40 without too much compromise. I think the best example I've noted so far is dishonored 2. I just couldn't get a locked 60 unless I turned the quality way down…even with FSR. But I can run it at native 800p, no FSR, high settings at an almost completely locked 40 FPS. It feels great, no quite 60 but significantly better than 30, and in a game like dishonored 2 40 FPS is just fine.
This guy looks like Elon Musk
Huh, I was wondering why 40hz would feel so much smoother, but this makes sense! And I'm extra shocked that it takes more battery and has bigger drops than 30fps/60hz
There's no point to talk about 100 degree point within this topic but rather point when it's hot in hands already.
there are games that seems very choppy at 30 fps and games that are very optimized for that, but what we really need is some sort of dynamic resolution feature to mantain that sweet 40-60 hz spot. Those games with built-in dynamic res really show the best performance of the Deck
Regarding frame pacing, can DLSS 3 actually improve frame pacing on a game with bad frame pacing?
My Steam Deck's screen starts flickering in a jarring way in 40fps mode.
50fps is fine and I'm mostly using 30 or 60fps anyway as the games I mostly play on it either are slow enough to not need more than 30 or light enough that even at 60 battery life is great.
48Hz is the sweet spot for me. 40 is still noticeably choppy.
Please do the same thing for the AOKZOE and GDP WIN MAX 2 Pro versions! Cheers!
What game is the girl in? Is that Crysis?
I love how no-BS and "to the point" this is. I like this guy and his output
Steam Deck is the best value since the PS5. I'm more excited about the Steam Deck because of the thousands of available games out of the gate. I hope the Deck has amazing success.
Half rate shading makes a lot of text unreadable in games I’ve tried so I don’t use it at all.
7:15 whats that game?
What game is that at 8:51?
wow that fan sounds like a zx spectrum game loading
does DF make games? like are they devs? they would probably make some of the most technically sound games if they did.
This is an amazingly well explained and visualized tech review, keep it up, Alex, you've gained a fan!
as far as looks and performance, it looks and runs incredible. We have either the switch or phones on the other side so ill take the deck.
Alright, things are moving on the right path… I might actually buy one as soon as it's available
Always glad to see Valve putting work into his products!
So there is no way to make the screen 30hz with 30 frame cap simultaneously at the same time be really cool if they added that really awesome video as always
So the fan at 40fps won't be that bad
lol, PC gaming is so lame. First off, it's weird seeing PC gamers happy about 40 fps…. That is fucking so not PC gamer it's astounding. Dafuq. This things kinda a turkey to be honest. Very shit performance.
This will be perfect for playing my favorite AAA games GTA3, BL3, and DOOM Eternal in super stable 40fps
Dumb question why can't the display go to 30hz wouldn't a 30hz and 30fps cap also use less battery making for a more stable experience in higher end games like elden ring
amazing vid =)
This might be what gets me to switch to the Dev branch. I prefer more stable software, but 40hz and Fan curves are killer features I'd want sooner rather than later.
2:34 maaan this is awful, it is not VRS it is ARS.
Old news… Now it can go as low as 15Hz.
Maaan, they are fast with updates 😩
Bruh… It's called a lint roller. Try one sometime.
Its so distracting that you're not looking at the camera but yet you set the shot up close to you
3:50
Are these… noise reduction artifacts?
Why would you use noise reduction on a clip that we’re supposed to hear the noise?
Weird seeing you play Crysis with the stick instead of the right touchpad. Thought you'd opt for the more mouse-like experience.
Great video though, as always! Cheers!
About fans and temperatures Nintendo Switch rules, for bathroom and beach device we must to make compromise sa Nintendo Switch rules plus double battery time
