So, in America, usually around 11th grade, military representatives show up and give an assessment called the ASVAB. It's a military assessment that gives a score based upon your answers. Your score determines what you would most likely be fit for in the military. For instance, I got a 63, so that would've allowed me to go to OCS, or Officer Candidate School. That's what you're thinking of when you mention West Point. West Point is.. like Oxford University if it were strictly for training military officers.
I'd argue that Michael Scott is the lowest of all possible ranks, SeconD Lieutenant.
There are no department managers in the office, no management staff under Michael's lead, no "team leads" to be Lieutenants. Michael is barely an "officer" as Corporate treats the entire platoon (branch) as a single team (department). Michael is treated more like an NCO than an actual Officer.
