I don’t understand the hate for this game.
The combat in this game is just not fun and the story is mid at best. I think these things could be fixed in a sequel though. Its not a terrible game but not that great either. The survival horror aspect is downplayed as well, this feels more like a action/brawler with some horror elements in it.
I don't know if you'll see this Anthony…but I just got done with the game. I Loved It. These 3 out of 10 reviews are ridiculous to me (sorry "Angry Joe" but there is zero way this is a 3 out of 10 game).
The combat/dodging is NOT "Broken" as so many others are saying. I just recorded and played the game (and am uploading each part as I type this). There are plenty of time that I was against 3 or 4 bad guy and while yes…the fights are tough as they Should Be…I was able to get by them and only died if I/myself screwed up. The combat and dodging was both intuitive and satisfying. It was like Splatterhouse Meets Dead Space and I Love that combination.
The environments had great atmosphere and variety. The surface of the moon, the inner workings of the prison, the mines, the colony. All well done with wonderful graphics. The sound design is on point, the music felt the game well, the voice acting was solid, and I really enjoyed the lead character. Josh Duhammel did a great job.
Yes the story was familiar but at the same time I still liked it. It reminded me of 80s/90s movies that I grew up with which is a plus.
The bad reviews are weirdly inconsistent for this. It's too easy, but it's too hard? It's like Dead Space but it's not like Dead Space? It's not scary? (even though…how many games are truly scary? I enjoy Resident Evil 2 remake but I wouldn't call it scary). I think the difficult was fine and as hard (or harder) as Dead Space. It did feel like a spiritual sequel to Dead Space which is a good one, but the intense & brutal combat system as well as the lead character having a voice and personality made it work well.
Are there flaws? Yes. The game should have come with a New Game+ from the beginning. The PS4 version still have some bugs (although nothing game-breaking) because it's a PS5 game trying to fit tightly onto a PS4 block. The manual save is pointless since it just does the same thing as the auto saves. And I do wish the audio logs were longer (I'm a sucker for them).
But overall, this is easily an 8.5 out of 10 for me. To me, this is the REAL Dead Space 3. I loved it.
Incredible game so far, scares the hell out of me, never experience any bugs
All I can say is, if you didn't preorder the collectors edition, Im truly sorry you missed out.
It’s different from the norm. I enjoyed the game despite some flaws 8/10
Agreed Anthony, this game was fun throughout and I think that’s important, especially good on console where there’s few issues… I wouldn’t call this a survival horror tho, more of an action-adventure sci-fi horror bc it’s missing key elements of gameplay to be called a true survival horror… For instance, there are no puzzles (very crucial imo), no key items, some inventory management although not really a big issue, and no backtracking Or instead of a more labyrinth layouts it’s very linear… Overall I feel like it was a good game but could’ve been a great game if they added the other gameplay elements that I mentioned previously, seems like the depth of the game in multiple areas, even the story elements, weren’t there, audio logs could’ve been a good opportunity to add some much needed depth and lore to the story but I felt they were lacking for the most part.
My fiancée and I are LOVING Callisto – absolutely amazing🥳👌🏻
Yea I thought this game was awesome cannot wait for new game plus!
I played on Max Security, I play a lot of melee action games usually highest difficulty. I got very frustrated, stuck on a lot of encounters, felt like things just weren't working. Playing again now on easy mode, having way more fun. Some games just don't need to be hard. In a game like this, being stuck on the same fight for 20 minutes isn't scary, its just annoying. I say play on easy for the best experience straight through, which is the opposite of what I'd say for dead space. Dead space's high difficulties were exhilarating, fun, and balanced
Awesome game. Just finished it on ps5. It looked gorgeous on OLED, played great and yeah. I have sold the game so someone else could enjoy it now. I dont get the hate really, it looks and plays like survivor horror game.
Maximillian Dood and his shill followers disliked this video.
Jokes aside, this is THE best review on The Callisto Protocol right now! And it's spoiler-free! The game is fucking incredible!
Thanks Anthony for all that you do. Cheers from New York! 😎👍
Very poor opinion on combat. You're saying people complain that it's too difficult or that it's not like Dead Space, which sure – some people do. But why not address actual issues? Like the fact that enemy pain state can get reset on level geometry, or how prone to glitches soft-lock-on is when fighting close to a wall or in a corner? How about the fact that combat is painfully easy when it works properly? There is absolutely 0 chance you can get hit at all when fighting 1v1 and that's most of this game's combat scenarios. Other scenarios are usually based on stealth or have huge ammo deposits and/or environmental hazards for easy kills. This barely got me tense and I played on maximum difficulty, the only times it got scary is when I was doing yet another duel and a monster was close to a wall, which often results in them getting a free instant reset during your combo for a free hit on you. There's a ton of other issues, like button-mashing QTEs, enemies sometimes having super armor on grab moves, bad autosaves that make you repeat shops, no manual saves and overall lack of content for a game that costs same price as new AAA titles. Thankfully you at least mention how bad performance was, but the game is still not fixed on PC and that's the biggest reason I've seen people hate on it, not the ass combat.
Also, why is this game being called a "survival horror"? There are no survival elements here, no puzzles and pretty much no optional combat. In fact – you are rewarded for killing enemies with items. This goes against every survival horror design I know of. Callisto is a horror shooter/melee action game, not a survival horror.
This game will not get a sequel for one reason and that is trying to copy Dead Space this game has every element of a Dead Space game and that is the downfall of this game
This game ain’t survival and ain’t horror, after all is said and done this is just another linear mediocre game.
The combat was my only issue honestly. While this isn’t Dead Space… it campaigned on being a new Dead Space. They used Dead Space for consumer loyalty benefits but also to sell the template to buyers a lot easier. They really did just take Dead Space and give it a new paint job. They didn’t have to be creative or innovative with anything in this game. And they didn’t try to. Some of the design elements just don’t make sense. Like Jacob’s movement speed and lack or evasiveness. He is t wearing a heavy engineering suit in the beginning but he still moves like Isaac. Going from shooting to melee isn’t smooth. You can get killed simply because he doesn’t pull his baton on fast enough after firing a gun. They added the melee because Dead Space didn’t really have any. But Dead Space had crowd control abilities like stasis. CP doesn’t really give you that option. You can run out of the way nor can you really push them back. 2-3 enemies is pretty much a guaranteed loading screen. He lacks capability simply to make the game harder. Can some game please introduce a combat reload?? If you’re being swarmed by enemies irl you aren’t taking your time to reload. Certain movements should be faster under duress.
so far I like it. Its not the best. But it's really good compared to most new IP's, the amount of hype and promotion for this game built unattainable expectations. It lead to disappointment. Dead space already exists so allot of these concepts are not new to veterans of this genre. Combat is new and unique. The story is enough to keep me interested. Its how you would expect from an escape story (your not looking to find out how this happened as much as your character wants to get the fuck outta dodge) until the end. It's beautiful. Tense and amazing sound design. But I wasn't scared so much as I was tense. I belive this game will do much better with a sequel to iron out its hiccups. I hope Callisto 2, will get the dead space 2 treatment and take us to Europa for some full scale horror. I give it 7 out of 10.
Terrible game
I say give it time. Just all things in life it will get better. Look at cyberpunk it was a bloody mess. Now it's awesome with extra things. I say never judge too soon. It will get better in 2023. Remember this is a new game studio. I am sure there are surprises coming. 🤘🤘
I think i might give this game another play go around.
Still undecided on this game at full price. I wanna play it, I just can’t decide if I should wait until it is way down in price.
