I myself have often theorised that aliens are in fact what has become of humankind in the future. I believe they have gone right back to the dawn of civilisation to actually kickstart our (therefore their own) evolution as a species. And their subsequent visits to various points in time (ie: Roswell, the time of the Incas & Aztecs etc.) has been them simply collecting data, plus guiding their own evolutionary process up to the point where they develop their time displacement ability in the distant future. Essentially, they are ensuring they come into existence.
