Last week it was discovered that Microsoft was finally pulling the plug on the beloved Windows Control Panel, for real this time, or so we thought. Now that it’s been a few days since the news broke, Microsoft has had some time to absorb the pitchfork-laden reaction to the announcement, and has softened the language it’s using just a bit.
The previous announcement from Microsoft was discovered in a support document, which said the control panel was in the process of being deprecated in favor of the more modern Settings app. As Ars Technica notes, the same statement is still on the same support page, but the sentence about it being deprecated has now been changed to “Many of the settings in Control Panel are in the process of being migrated to the Settings app, which offers a more modern and streamlined experience.”
Microsoft removed the word “deprecated” from its statement on the Control Panel, but how useful it will continue to be remains unknown.

Reading between the lines, that sounds like the Control Panel is here to stay. However, most of its settings have already been migrated to the Settings app, so it seems like Microsoft will keep doing that until the Control Panel becomes largely irrelevant. Microsoft has been trying to get rid of the Control Panel for over a decade now, seemingly because it uses an ancient interface that’s been part of Windows for almost 40 years. That interface does not convey the image of “new” or “modern” at all, but it works, so most of us still enjoy using it. It’s also not made for tablets or touch-based devices.
Though we can’t say for sure, it seems Microsoft probably heard peoples’ complaints and is backpedaling a bit here. The news rubbed a lot of people the wrong way because in general the Control Panel is familiar and easy to use while the Settings app is more confusing with its endless sub-menus full of options. It’s hard to say what will come of the Control Panel going forward, but it seems inevitable it’ll only be useful going forward for antiquated categories like “Internet Options.”
