Honestly I think reviewers should stick to specific genres. One reviewer only reviews shooters so they can tell if a game is a good shooter, another reviewer is all about puzzle games so they can tell if it's a good puzzle game.
Another issue with this whole thing is that the entire economic process of all of this tends to hinge on day 1 sales and player counts as well as pre-orders, when in reality it can take a month or more for players to really settle in, get good, learn all the nuances of the game and then finally have a matured perspective on the game that's accurate.
On top of this so many games are launching barely half finished as live services and the quality of the game at any point can fluctuate wildly. By the time the game's lifecycle comes to an end and all the bugs are patched out and it has enough content to sustain players for years the player count is petering out and support is getting dropped. So any review at one particular point in time is going to be irrelevant down the line.
Jesus have you even ever read a movie review from a moderately big press? The most commonly used scoring system for a movie review is a 4-star or 5-star system. NYT is a outliner as they stopped giving a review score completely sometime in the past, but every other major press doing a movie review I've read has a score. Not just a thumbs up or down.

I stopped seeing reviews.
OPM (U.S. Official Playstation Monthly), any score for the PS1, I feel was very accurate. Did not matter who made the game, even a top notch publisher. If that particular game sucked, they let you know. It was strange sometimes to play a game demo, think it was the bees knees, read their review of the game in a later issue and think the reviewer had to make a mistake, because the demo was so good. Then actually buy the game and go… They were actually right. 😅

I will always say TLOU2 is a great game and it doesn't deserve the hate. What happened tp Joel is sad but its both necessary and realistic in that world. Plus I can feel empathy for Abby bc we forget how many Joel killed in TLOU1. This game shows us that even npc have lifes and ppl they care about, even normal enemies cry out the name of their dead comrades and swear vengance on you! Truly amazing but thats my opinion

What's funny is that Persona 4 Golden was shown multiple times having a high review. it's a 70 hour game, minimum. Only the story, and first-daying dungeons. Even i, when i play it again, usually take roughly a year to finish it. To be fair i play on the hardest difficult, but still.
My favourite games are Dwarf Fortress, OSRS and GW2.
I just don't like games 😔, every game that anyone else said "it's cool" I don't like.
If I would rank games from metacritic with ±9 rating, I wouldnt rate them any higher than 6.
