i'm sorry for me this game story was ok the first game story was miles better
As much as I understand the purpose of GoW 2018’s narrative, I really did prefer Ragnarok’s because if you didn’t play the 2018 game beforehand, thinking about Kratos and Atreus’s relationship was like in the past was far more interesting than actually seeing it. Because what we see feels more on the nose than it should be, and that it’s the kind of stuff that should be left to the imagination. We seen how Kratos has misled Atreus into learning the wrong lessons by telling him to close his heart to the suffering and half-assing his confession of being a god, causing Atreus to become more disillusioned. And I think leaving these kinds of things to the imagination becomes more interesting.
God of War Ragnarok feels more like a sequel to 3 than the actual sequel because we get to see how Kratos would reinterpret the sacrifice he made in the end of 3, to open his heart to everything. We see the Ghost of Sparta dabble into pissing off gods again and being an actual ghost as he sees his new family start to grow up without him.
Why Faye wanted Kritos to see his fate in yotnhaim then destroy the shrine that show's kritos dead?
You say Kratos seems to only hit what’s in front of him but in all your combat gameplay you’re always using the lock on mechanics which is completely made for just focusing on what’s in front of you
Oh my god. You took 110% of my loose impressions and articulated them with incredible precision.
I've been subscribed to you since the early days and your writing skill, which was always top tier, has matured and gained pristine clarity.
Appreciate it brother.
Bro you need to try to go play 2018 again. I platinumed Ragnarok and have put over 100 hours into it just fighting for fun and I'm playing 2018 now for the 4th time and I honestly feel like you can't dislike the combat in God of War if you like it in Ragnarok.
I played it on PS4 Pro, but I’d be excited to give at least some of it a shot again on a PS5 when I can eventually get one!
One the best nuanced review i've seen so far. Thank You !
The shoehorned RPG/stats system is was made me immediately jump off the game after 2-3 hours in. Why am I having to take time crunching numbers in a God of War game?
This game is a really good game. Most epic adventure game yet on ps5. I don’t see how anyone would dislike it
Should have taken out all of loki playable sections..i mean that fight with granny?
It’s just a number game if u want it to be. Some gear has Ability and Parks. So if u just slow down and try to lean it….u can do some cool shit that the came dont tell u about..I did a Cooldown/slow time build. So I can use my magic more. And slow time a lil if I’m in trouble. Now just imagine if I went all slow time or all cooldown build. I like the review but to anybody reading this…..there’s only 3 parts to THE RPG system. Armor, weapons, enchantments. Just learn ONE at a time and when you feel like you understand it….move on to the next. I start with armor so I can survive while I’m learning everything else.
"The first game had Kratos coming to terms with being a dad."
To be more accurate, it was about Kratos being a dad again, but now with massive pent-up trauma to contend with.
It wasn't just that Kratos was some "alien who didn't know what a son was," it was that Kratos was still deeply scarred by the fact that he murdered his own child, and feared that he neither deserved to be a father nor could be trusted to keep Atreus safe. And thus, he remained stubbornly detached until time and circumstances compelled him to heal those old wounds, and he begins to understand and convey Faye's message to him: don't be sorry about what you've done, be better.
Furthermore, we have to remember that what Kratos knows about raising boys is HARSH, which is something he speaks about in Ragnarok. He didn't want to subject Atreus to the cruel (and often lethal) methods and customs that forged Spartan warriors, but didn't know any other way, so… Yeah, raising a son in a different culture is legitimately alien to him. Thus, he has to learn how to be a father again through Mimir and Freya's guidance.
All that said, I'm glad you're enjoying Ragnarok, as it does a fantastic job retroactively clarifing GoW 2018's more nuanced subjects and themes.
As for the ostensible gear/stat bloat, I think that focusing on the numbers early on is a mistake. They're so miniscule that it should be clear they don't matter until much later. However, the perks attached to gear (like Realm Shift, special parry techniques, massive buffs to specific weapons and attacks, etc. ) can DRAMATICALLY change how you play. For example, you can form a build where one good last-second dodge can give you Witch Time, strength and runic buffs, refresh all your abilities, and increase your stun. Suddenly you have a very rewarding high-risk, high-reward playstyle that encourages you to read enemies and control the field. Or you could have a style geared around being tanky and buffing your Hyperion Grapple to do ludicrous amounts of damage and stun, and now you're just blasting into enemies with chain pulls, killing them outright or landing R3 finishers with impunity.
Unlike the prior game, these unique builds come early in the game, and since every piece of gear can now be upgraded to level 9, they are all viable from beginning to New Game+. Admittedly, some perks are less consequential than others, but there is still plenty of room for meaningful experimentation and innumerable unique builds.
And as for the stat numbers themselves, they aren't quite as artificial as you'd think, but I think the real problem is that there isn't enough combat during the main story to feel that growth. It's not until the back-to-back combat challenges in Muspelheim that you start to really respect how stats can change your game; when you're getting killed in three or four hits while stunlocked by trash mobs, suddenly those numbers in Defense and Vitality look awful tempting.
Unfortunately, Muspelheim also functions like a hyperbolic time chamber, in that if you enter at the earliest opportunity and tough out the challenges until the end, you'll leave so dramatically overpowered that the rest of the game becomes a joke (a problem the prior game also had).
Amazing video . The Gow reboot designs seems to be centered around gameplay taking a backseat to story telling whereas with the original series( first 6 games) it was the other way around . For the reboot it works very well. You can tell it’s inspired heavily by the last of us / uncharted design .
I have to disagree with the stats stuff. I think it was cumbersome last game but it's properly pared down this time. And I think there's some actual meaningful choice this time. Biggest one was one boss I had to go full strength plus realm tear gear to win. There could probably be more of that but it might have been distracting at that point. It's not holloe knight.
A man raised to be a spartan warrior, fooled to kill his wife and daughter, attempted suicide, murdered the entire Greek God pantheon for revenge, will struggle a bit to be a loving father lol.
Hey everyone you can aim with the control if u turn it on in settings very fun
Just finished the story yesterday. My only two complaints: two many puzzles for padding and I did not want to spend any time in the menus for upgrading my armor and weapons. Other than that, it's a perfect game.
God of Snore
It's got 7 hours of cutscenes!
Damn not liking the 2018 GOW is a huge fucking yikes. Unimaginable for me, assuming you played on hard or GMGOW
Thanks for the vid
I wish there was a consistent way of adapting out the loot-grinds RPG elements of the game. It really adds nothing to the intended experience beyond stalling for time.
Felt like a video essay.
Great review/ Thoughts on the game being something bigger. 👍🏾
Commenting for the algorithm
Seems like a aaa ps4 gen compliment to the previous release. Hopefully this game does well enough for sony to greenlight a proper current gen sequel.
Demand better?
I wonder why no one has mentioned the complete lack of the barehanded skill tree, in this game all you can do is one combo, in 2018 you had stances and different combo’s you could pull off.
I didn’t like the first one either
did you enjoy this game's marvel quip?
beautiful
It didnt do it for me either. I think i will do this one though.
I'm really glad you brought up the issues regarding RPG elements. For me, the first game's RPG elements still even after replaying and going through NG+ felt like a slog. Collecting enchantment after enchantment with a few differences in activation and differences in base stats really felt like such a waste of time and took me so far out of the action whenever I got something new that by the time I used it I had the feeling of "I just spent 15 minutes navigating menus for this?"
When it comes to the skills, I'm fine with RPG elements. But all of the enchantments, hilts, talismans, armors, etc. etc. etc. felt like such a time investment for little gain. I kinda hoped they would have taken the "less is more" approach here. Have less item variety, but include items/weapons/armors that changed the way combat felt drastically. I kinda prefer how in the older games you would get new weapons or special abilities from bosses (thinking GoW 3 with Hades' sickles).
Regardless, thanks for the great review. I'm sure I'll still really enjoy the game.
I don't why I don't like the last game very much. I have nothing but positive things to say about it. Everything it does it does exceptionally well. But something about it never compelled me to replay it past the first playthrough. And when I see stuff on this game I think it looks good. It looks like more God of War. But I have zero desire to play it even though it looks enjoyable.
Question – are there any spoilers in this review?
Should’ve had the upgrades system like demon souls or horizon
It looks like everyone got the game code except me 😂
9:00
you do realise you dont have to lock onto enemies right ?????
try combat without locking on and im pretty sure that wont be an issue at all lmao
manually turn the camera a bit and youll attack to the side
i appreciate this review even if it's bad news. i was unimpressed by Dad of War2018's combat to the point that i turned it to easy because i didn't feel any satisfaction from playing or mastering the system and its upgrade trees.
if Ragnarok is gonna continue it's lords of the fallen combat design this game is going into the "watch a let's play" pile
anyway this is a great video and i love the enthusiasm and energy you bring to your vids!
