I definitely don’t think this is a 5. There are issues yes but it’s not as terrible as some make it out to be just lacking in many areas. I think the biggest issue was they marketed this as a spiritual successor to dead space but lacks a lot of elements to compete with dead space. I have read comments saying fighting multiple enemies is easy if you prioritize and while I agree in some situations that works the animation of dodging and the camera getting caught on walls in tight areas on top of enemies hitting from off screen makes the game more difficult for the wrong reasons. I’m not saying dead space didn’t have some frustrating areas but the dodge mechanic is useless when you got multiple enemies rushing you and can’t dodge without being hit.
A five rating means don't bother if you're not into this genre, or type of game.

The Callisto Protocol is actually one of my favorite games of 2022, and with the recent updates made the game even better. If you haven't played this game, I highly recommend you to play it now.

I've been reading game reviews for 30 years and this one feels off & unprofessional. The gameplay and pacing are a matter of taste. When a review is lower than the technical qualities of a game, it falls flat. 6 for Alien Isolation, a game that is virtually on all "Best horror games of all time" lists, never giving more than 8 to any "The Last of US" games and now 5 for this one. Horror is the most divisive genre in movies, but those are games. Objectivity in game reviews still counts. The deaths are too long? Is that a bad joke?! I remember a reviewer complaining that he was fed up of hiding in lockers in Alien : Isolation and dying over 150 times (I don't remember the outlet). Sometimes it has to do with the way we play. First playthrough, I thought Callisto was really hard. After playing at Max Security and getting better, I discovered a tightly produced game that doesn't overstay its welcome. The shooting and bashing is really good, just not how people expected it to be. It was wrongly marketed as a spiritual successor to Dead Space. It this regard, Striking Distance made a mistake. Weak combat mechanics? Yeah, right!
An excellent review, albeit an unfavourable one. As someone who loved Dead Space i was interested in this game, but based on what i've learned here i don't think Callisto is for me. Thanks for saving me money and disappointment.

Too many movies in games now that you can't skip. GOT really bad. I stopped playing it because of it
I guarantee He saw other reviews, and played the game as follows: makes awful upgrade selections, never even bothers to learn the combat and dodge system, zero strategy-just runs into every open area full of enemies then complains when he gets swarmed. And btw, looking down instead of paying attention then getting attacked, is not a "jumpscare". Bad take, the game is awesome. Patch on the 15th fixed basically everything.

I’m playing on the hardest difficulty and only seen him die like twice. This game is complaining that the game is wasting his time with death cutscenes. Get good bro.

Having completed the game I agree with most points mentioned in the review. I would improve the inventory system to something like RE where you can manage items better, re-mapping controls so that L1 is block, Triangle is dodge and light and heavy attacks are mapped to R1 and R2. Having dodging and blocks mapped to left analog stick is fine 1v1 but against multiple enemies it gets messy. Characters could've been developed more throughout the story also. I would say it's a 7/10 imo.

I thought this was supposed to be a taut, tense, (survival) horror game? Not just swinging a pipe at wave after wave of enemies. I have it waiting for me when I get home but seems disappointing.

Dude people alike so harsh with some of these reviews. This game was great I'm on the last boss now. It's wicked fun The kills are awesome it's a good mix of dread and combat. I think this game was hyped up so much and people were waiting for it for so long that anything less than absolutely you know a home run was going to disappoint people pretty much it's pretty close to a home run it's a fun game

The major problem is when you have to combat more than 1 enemy at the same time. Thats where the combat gets messy

All the melee "issues" make the game harder. Once you master multiple enemies it is extremely fulfilling, not annoying.

Gotta say, this review made me lose a lot of respect for gamespot.
I expect game reviewers to try to understand the mechanics of the game they are playing. But seeing gameplay where the reviewer tries to battle 5 enemies in melee told me otherwise. It's about avoiding these situations, and the game gives you many tools to do so.
But in a way, maybe this review is fitting for an audience that does not want to put effort into learning a game's mechanics.

Played it and your review is far from the rating it deserves. Really enjoyable and the graphics and atmosphere alone should rank this game in the high 7s at the least. Thankfully I don’t wholly rely on reviews like this, otherwise I would have missed out on an excellent buy.
