I was kinda sold on the game but once I saw the "run in one lane with boost" mechanic prop up in minigame stages it's a clear no to me once again. I'm not supporting gameplay that hasn't innovated for 17 goddamn years in franchise alone in Secret Rings, where they must've looked at the wii spin off, saw that it had much more success than the other 06 release we don't talk about and thought "oh, people like lane gameplay more than adventure gameplay, let's make it the only thing we put out for a decade, but also numb it down a lot so it isn't as interesting anymore".
Looking at the gameplay sections I couldn't tell you if it's secret rings, the werehog bullshit, the knight bullshit, the colorful bullshit or generations + others.
All I see is bullshit and the last truly enticing sonic game in the last decade was Sonic Mania.
spoiler free, shows all the bosses lol
So after years of sonic games. They still fail with platforming physics.. think they should stick to 2d
The amount of pop ins on a next gen console is an insult.
Sonic 3D games have always been confused as to what it wants to be. For one, Sonic is a cartoony character that's set in a photo realistic world. Doesn't make sense. Mario Odyssey worked because while Mario is cartoony, the world around him was also designed in the same way. Sonic should'ce done the same.
I get why they needed these random blocks and slides strewn across the world. Sonic needs them to perform his stunts. After all its whats set Sonic apart when the first 2D games came out. But they could have integrated them better in the game. Like make them part of the environment rather than random eyesores.
I actually like abstract world building and miss it tbh. Not really a huge fan of modern realistic games though so honestly that's a plus for me here.
Sonic Mania was hugely popular, just do that again. Same gameplay, new zones.
The world's vibe reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus but that and Sonic are very, very different. Sonic looks very out of place, as do all the floating grind rails and springs everywhere. The pop-in is really jarring, especially as some things like grind rails are visible from a distance but then hoops and springs only pop in when they are closer than the grind rails you can already see. I think there's the potential for really good game in here but not a Sonic game.
You're not sorry Ian….
My main question would be – why is this a sonic game? From what i'm seeing, it doesn't look or feel like a sonic game. Hopefully I'm just too skeptical.
This looks, in every sense of the word, like utter shit.
They should be using the original sonic games as reference and build based on that. One of the things that they get wrong or are completely omitting is the physics of Sonic that the original games had. The sense of building momentum and allowing physics to exist with sonic curled as a ball combined the pleasure of rolling a ball, or playing pinball with speed and platforming. These elements dont co exist coherently in their modern Sonic games. They were so out of touch with what the original games did that even in Sonic 4 they blue this aspect up.
How about Nintendo making the next Sonic Game. Only then will we get a really good Sonic game :-).
It’s too zoomed out & needs to be faster
It definitely feels (and looks) like if this were say a bubsy game and not sonic then it would have been a much much harsher review but given how bad sonic games have been (sans mania) and how much blind nostalgia there is for the series everyone's willing to give it a pass.
it looks empty
The 3D world is a bit bland and generic. It almost looks like some other game that Sega bought and then put Sonic in it.
At 8:46 that’s literally a level from Sonic Generations isn’t it? It’s the 3D version of Sky Sanctuary Zone.
Honestly I really don't care about world building and how the rails are floating, the main big issue in 3D sonic was in most games was the controls and Sonic interaction with the tracks if that's good, that like the majority of Sonic's issues… As long those rail sections aren't copy & paste, the world full of secrets I'll be ok to just enjoy roaming the world and doing tricks, similar to Spider-Man PS4 and Ghost of Tsushima!
Why do they keep trying to put sonic and his cartoonish pals into photo-realistic settings??? It looks so incongruous. If they're going to copy someone, they should look towards Crash, not Breath of the Wild. Their world-building is just so far from the aesthetic of the sonic characters.
Honestly, i think the reason that 3D sonics keep failing is the platforming. If there is platforming, it's supposed to be challenging, if you fail the challenge, then you stop moving/have to turn around/start again. If you kill sonic's speed, you've ruined the sonic experience.
If you absolutely have to include platforming then it needs to be built in a way that you automatically die and get dropped back in at speed, to keep the momentum of the game going.
the number of corners cut for this game is insane
I’m really enjoying the turbulent sea with a fog-hidden horizon.. combined with sea cliffs and rain.
I expected the world to be too barren, but it’s beautifully atmospheric.
10:10 Part of this D belongs to God.
I’m sick and tired of these barren open worlds. And the amount of pop-ins I’ve seen in reviews are unacceptable on a ps5.
I appreciate what the devs are trying to do, but the real question is when will the next installment be that refines these new ideas & mechanics? If Sonic's next game is five years away, that's risky because Frontiers will be the series latest iteration, for better or for worse. Conversely, Pokemon Violet & Scarlet is coming less than nine months after Arceus. So, hopefully we'll see an evolution of the ideas presented in Arceus. This is why if the Sonic devs can improve on Frontiers in a timely manner, The Blue Blur has a better chance at staying relevant for hardcore fans and the industry as a whole moving forward.
I hated Korok seeds. Koco's are based more on the chao babies, repurposed with a different game mechanic. Dont agree about this part of the review…
Sonic looks so out of place. I feel like I'm looking at a goofy Death Stranding mod. I half expect Norman Reedus and his friendly jar foetus to awkwardly stumble into frame at any moment.
After hearing this I'm getting solid 6-7 out of 10 vibes. At least it not Sonic Boom bad
Oh no, Sonic's friends got turned into NFT's, better go rescue them
3d Sonic games are just terrible in general. I think the idea only works in 2d, they've tried time and time again to make these games work in 3D and it seems impossible.
I’m sorry I disagree with this review
lol eurogamer trying to jump between the rails lol. you can just move the control stick side to side to jump between them
my god why it looks like these fan made games with wide empty areas even the animations are lacking :/
Sonic Death: Frontiers Stranding
So you use the worst console possible to capture this footage and you're bitching about it not working properly and having Poppins what the fuck did you expect
This definitely needed more time on the oven, great game wrong time
OMG I can't believe you called this spoiler free & then mentioned that there's fishing, wah wah waaah. /s
Also, is there seriously no classic stress-inducing drowning music?
This feels terribly slow. And for a Sonic game, that's the worst thing to be.
Better than Elden Ring
Of course one of the first things we see is Ian drawing a knob 😅
Yo
