This week I’m having a bit of fun analyzing the Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Movie trailer. Easter eggs, D&D …

Now that you've watched the movie, I'd be curious as to your thoughts on it. Though we disagree about the Tomb of Horrors (by the way, I own the original and all it's incarnations since), I generally do hold your opinion on all things RPG highly. I found the movie a fun, entertaining romp. Loved Chris Pine as the Bard (though I might have recommended some Bard-like powers be given to him to the movie's makers) and Hugh Grant (as the faux-villain). The Red Wizards of Thay are a worthy true villain. The female druid kind of stole all the scenes she was in. I hope they make a series of movies with this cast, perhaps losing a member along the way and picking up a new character or two as they go (as one would expect from a D&D campaign).
Wizards of the coast got mad about him being fat so they're sending the Pinkertons on the studio
How did it get fat?
I watched the movie yesterday and it was the best.
hey im from the future turns out hes just a fat dragon
Pyrocynical
Nice lore background!
Just watched this, glad to see the movie is donig so well at the box office
I MUST SEE THEMBERCHAUD ❤️❤️❤️
he ate his last lair duh
I loved the fat dragon, he's so cute I just wanna hug him
Just came back from a showing and wanted to double check this video and see how close you got I'd say you did better than 50% on your predictions.
Just saw the movie, noice
This movie is actually good
That shield spell was actually a time stop spell
Loved the movie!
They put in the cartoon characters from the old TV show yet race swapped Eric, the Cavalier
One of the main characters is a bard, "Whole lotta love" is 100% an appropriate choice 😂
They've stumbled into the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Cinematic Universe and landed in the Red Forest. Keep going to get to the Brain Scorcher, where the 2nd Edition Psionics rules went to die.
I'm pretty sure that statue is a copper dragon, based on the shape of the horns.
Watching the trailer when you have much more background makes it twice as interesting. Thanks for sharing those details. Maybe the film company should have a cheat sheet (or hire you) to boost enjoyability for newer fans.
I don‘t want to break the 666 likes, consider this comment as a like
I wondered if the round building was Helm’s Hold? It is in the right direction and the warrior statues might be linked to Helm, but turning it into an arena sounds like a stretch, so I reckon you’re right about it being something new.
With it being situated around Neverwinter, I wonder if the forest is around Thundertree, where there’s still ash zombies rising all over the place? I wonder why they didn’t go with Gauntlgrym for the underdark setting – maybe they want more of a tour!
Oh! I loved that the barbarian has Danger Sense/Feral Instinct kick in with the mimic. I’m so happy that it’s built in a way that we can see round by round what’s happening – the dragon’s acid attack followed by (rolls dice) another one six seconds later!
I was a bit cynical about this, but after having discussed this with my gf, and after your review, well, I'll let myself enjoy this when it goes out. Would I have liked a more "serious" movie ? Yeah. But this could be a good start for the D&D franchise comeback to the big screen, and maybe later we could hope to see some of the classic stories of the FR come to life (looking at you Elminster… and I would really love an adaptation of Shadril's story)
Thought it a good overview of the trailer, and things to think about, for sure.
I believe the use of "Whole Lotta Love" in the trailer was just a little adrenaline booster, rather than a song directly meant to relate to the plot or characters.
It's one of the most recognized riffs in rock, and one of the most exciting.
You made the movie much better explaining this
3:56– It is leather armor though, Bards can wear them in 5E.
Maybe blame the costuming department that made it look like plate than leather.
(Maybe make it a vest to make it "light armor" look)
Little disappointed it's taking place in the forgotten realms only because with this turning cheek approach to D&D the movie is taking. It's really excluding the possibility of a Crystal Shards live action don't in a more serious style that it would deserve
here's a thing about wildshaped owlbear, you can turn into one in 4th edition because of the keyword, the ability is literally said it too
Regarding the shift to an owlbear, as well as the direct change from one form to another, the Shapechange spell would allow that. It is, also, a druid spell albeit a level 9 spell. Was she wearing a jeweled crown (the material component for Shapechange) at one point?
Not all Dragons look like Smaug,
in Hollywood!
Most of the earthmotes fell during the 2nd sundering (start of 5e) which might be why the moonstone mask isn't shown. Also the collusium might be covering the section of the city that was walled off in 4e and had a huge chasm.
The red Wizard pic you put up with "zass tam" is who I think that is, the lich who takes care of the doomvault in Thay.
Idk about the battle standard but that but the army behind the dragon look like the cult of the dragon.
As much as I love Lord of the Rings, I'm glad they aren't trying to go the serious route. Most DnD sessions are full of laughs as a group of friends are goofing off around a table. Taking the Guardians of the Galaxy and Ocean's 11 comedic levity mixed with action route is perfect.
Well… my faith in Hollywood is close to ZERO although I got fond for this trailer – Trying hard to forgive the post-modern parasite injected on the movie (which is a rule nowadays) – diversity, diversity, diversity, barbarian woman, dumb-white-male making puns all the way through the movie… argh! Hope it will compensate with a good storytelling
Clearly the Bard is going to subdue Themberchaud.
Not the standard, but the masks of the army in black identify them as the cult of the dragon btw. Meaning the horn may also be the draakhorn

What does Critical Role have to do with Forgotten Realms? Nothing, right?
I'm going to be honest, Led Zeppelin use to be the theme music of every D&D session from the beginning of D&D until 3rd edition, also SEVERAL led zeppelin songs make reference to LotR & the Hobbit, ie Misty Mountain Hop, The Battle of Evermore , & Ramble On
The city is Waterdeep if I am not mistaken… It even has the "Field of Triumph" arena…
Good video relating the trailer to the lore. Thank you.
The city is waterdeep
Bards will bang anything it’s hilarious! I get what they were going for with the trailer!
This movie is going to dominate at the box office because people genuinely want escapism & this totally serves this up on a silver platter!
I have hopes for this movie but currently Wrath of the Dragon God is currently the only "official" Dungeons and Dragons movie I watch.
