I never thought of it as a child but when i played ocarina of time on the 3ds as a young adult I always wondered if the forest temple was meant to be a sort of stronghold/defensive structure that the sages and the royal family could retreat to.
The boss room looks like it could have housed the portraits of their respective temples to bring representation and some comfort to the sages it they were forced to seek shelter in the temple if there was some sort of conflict if there was a great enough threat to Hyrule.
This is by far my favorite OOT dungeon
I know its a few years on but hey.
I think this may have well been a structure to defend the sage of forest. Each of the temples are called just that, "temples". I think we are mistaking a primary purpose for a secondary one. The symbol of the forest sage is present in the architecture; so it is doubtful that the temple was built prior to there being, at least, a known forest sage.
Considering the reason the sages exist, to help seal the darkness, each temple would ideally be constructed not just as a place of worship or torture etc. But as a place where the sage would be safe when evil came to bear. The sages are aware of their duties as were likely the people who helped design and build the temples. This fits in that theme as there arent many defenses other than what was mentioned in this video. Every other temple is constructed such that it is exceedingly difficult to approach the temple (fire water time) or the temple itself is designed around a mechanic or with defensible layout in mind (spirit, shadow, forest).
A clue that might lend to this is that the battlements face inward, normally a keep or fort has these facing outward towards an adversary. Generally when undertaking a project of this size and complexity, where ego is not a consideration, builders are loathe to make additions such as these with no purpose; especially so when, if, the temple is designed for defensiblity it would make be easier and more efficient for troops to have more ready access to the battlements via ladders or walkways. The battlements facing to the interior are antithetical to defending solely from outside forces.
I may be talknng out of my butt, but i figured i would put this into the world
2:50 Link isn’t 17. He’s 18. 11 as chid link and 18 as adult link… or at least I thought.
Link, the Hero of Time, uses the Ocarina of Time to open the Door of Time to pull the Master Sword from the Pedestal of Time. Thyme time!
It’s a castle for sure which is just a fortified residence
I've always like the idea of the Forest Temple serving as the mansion home for some prominent rich Hylian family who has ties to the Royal Family and is entrusted to guard one of the entrances to the Sacred Realm. Yet, the Hylian Civil War, which took place before OOT's story, destroyed this family, either killing or forcing them to flee, and the Forest Temple was abandoned to rot under the overgrowth.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I think this temple was used as a secret mansion to house members of the Hyrule royal family. The fortress-like structure was merely to protect them from outside dangers.
Maybe is both… a mansion and a former fort, many buildings that have served as mansions for the rich have changed their propuse trought time and became little forts to hold enemies attacks.
Lost Woods may be a portal itself, being that the reason people get lost never to be found again. Link arrives to Termina by it.
From memory, only the Forest Temple and Stone Tower change gravity while traversing them; both places seem to imply having portals to other places/dimensions.
Nice work, awesome!
forest temple was by far my favorite temple, shadow and spirit the other two can both be last.
Idk why but this dungeon always creeped me out the most as a kid. Especially the music.
You write so beautifully. In my opinion, the Zelda series is magnificent because of its inscrutable mysteries. Even the soundtrack to the Forest Temple is uncomfortable and discordant, portending something nightmarish, or at least secret.
In regards to the Fortress theory and Link's Mother, its possible that the Forest Temple was once a sacred location and possibly a training ground for the Knights of Hyrule! This would explain the various traps within the structure as training areas to test the skills of knights and possibly the chosen hero of the Knight's bloodline! Its halls and structures could be designed for meditation and/or communication with the spirits of past knights similar to Hero's Shade or Swiftblade I from Minish Cap to acquire lost skills & hone their skills further! One reason Link's mother may have fled to the forest was to take shelter within the Forest Temple (maybe her husband was stationed there for training or cause of its association with the Knights' Bloodline)! Another possibility is it was built by a previous Hero and once served as a place to test future heroes and/or Knights of their lineage! There seems to be some connection to the Kokiri as the Kokiri Emerald adorns some parts of the structure's design! The Great Deku Tree is known to be an ally of the Royal Family and took Link in cause he sensed the boy's destiny! Its possible that the forest temple was a secluded sacred site used by the Knights and/or the descendants of past heroes as a safe haven to test their abilities! It may have also been constructed to aid in the Great Deku Tree's rebirth should it die as the tree despite its divinity is mortal! My theory is Deku Tree Sprout is the reincarnation of the previous Deku Tree hence their knowledge of Link's back history & Hyrule's origins!
My thoughts on the Forest Temple is that it was created by the Ancient Sages to ensure the Great Deku Tree would be reborn to protect the forest and possibly to keep the Lost Woods in check!
Still I wonder if the Stalfos curse that Fado speaks of is actually true as we see no real evidence of Grog turning into one other than his sudden disappearance (his absence from the Lon Lon Ranch celebration could be explained by his family issues and tendency to avoid other people so I don't think it is confirmation he became a Stalfos as Stalfos are only encountered in the Forest Temple)! The Hero's Shade is never confirmed to be a Stalfos, just the spirit of the Hero of Time who lived long enough to grow up into adulthood & have children as the Hero of Twilight is their descendant and not their reincarnation as the Hero's Shade doesn't pass on until they pass down their techniques to their descendant allowing them to pass on while leaving Hyrule's future in their hands!
We don't know how the curse even works as she says they become Stalfos which could mean anything from a transformation like the Gibdo Curse in Majora's Mask which doesn't effect Link even during his exploration of the well which could be due to his possession of the Ocarina of Time which may grant him the protection of the Goddess of Time and/or child timeline's Triforce of Courage! Alternatively adults who perish within the lost woods become Stalfos so one must die for the curse to take effect which makes sense & could explain the Hero of Time becoming the Stalfos like Hero's Shade! One possibility is the curse causes anyone who enters the Lost Woods to become a Stalfos after death regardless if they were in the woods when their death occurs!
However we also have to consider that the Stalfos curse is never mentioned in any orher Zelda game and Fado may be an unreliable narrator as being a Kokiri she may be trying to scare Hylians out of the woods for their safety or due to distrust of outsiders (Koroks have a history of being weary of Hylians and can be mischievous like little children so its possible the Kokiri could behave similarly) especially during Ganondorf's reign & its only after the defeat of Ganondorf do they leave the forest to celebrate with other races proving Kokiri can leave the forest without dying!
Mind you Hyrule is a much more dangerous place in the Adult Timeline due to Ganondorf's power causing darkness to spread! Fado may be aware of how dangerous the forest has become and like the Kokiri who blocks Link from leaving the forest as a child, its possible her actions are due to the dangers of monster attack in the Lost Woods as Hyrule Field is full of dangers like Peahats & Stalchildren at night during the child era which may be the real reason the Kokiri guarding the path out of the woods doesn't stop Link after the Deku Tree dies as the forest is no longer safe without his protection (alternatively he no longer cares what happens due to rumors Link causes the Deku Tree's death spread by Mido)!
The Forest Temple may not only represent the forest but also the wind (originally it was going to have a wind theme)! The wind can be seen as representation of Farore breathing life into the world, hence why forests and the wind are often associated with her as well as certain incarnations of Link who often embodies courage due to being a hero who combats the darkness!
your videos explain a lot of the game…. keep it up!
The crazy part is the forest temple was supposed to be the main hub of the game, and you would travel through paintings to different locations like Mario 64
If the Poes are the souls of the dead, then maybe the Poe Sisters are the restless souls of the people who guarded this place in times long forgotten.
Original hyrule castle
@zeltik you need to do more of these, so many more can be made

Whatever each Temple was originally built for, it seems to have been later on converted into a space of worship for each of the Sages, and I think the "boss room" in each dungeon is where each Sage would do their praying, despite having many other rooms dedicated for other religious folk (but who haven't attained the rank of Sage) to worship. I'm also imagining the Sages could convene meetings and/or access the Sacred Realm / Chamber of Sages from the boss room, Star-Wars-Jedi-Council-Hologram-style. Perhaps each Medallion the Sages possess was not only a symbolic marker of their title but also the key to accessing the Chamber of Sages from their respective Temples.
Considering that the Forest Temple has a room (the boss chamber) that resembles the room in the Temple of Time that houses the Master Sword, and since the Master Sword tends to be found in either a temple or forest ruins depending on the game and its place on the timeline(s), I'd be willing to bet that the Forest Temple is either a former or alternate housing location for the Master Sword.
I Like think theory since in later games in the Timeline the master sword or the temple of time are moved to forest Locations would make Sense If there Is an Access Point to the sacred realm also in lost woods
This makes a lot of sense because the Master Sword has a history of being found in the forest.
As a kid the forest temple scared me more than the shadow temple
Interesting that Ganon remarks about banishing the phantom to "the gap between dimensions" in a chamber that resembles that of the sages. Almost poetic parallel to him sealed away upon defeat. There is even a scene of the sages combining to form a portal-like opening to the realm.
The Forest Temple is in the same place as the Eastern Palace in A Link to the Past which is one of the possible futures of Ocarina of Time in the Zelda timeline.
The painting room where you fight phantom Ganon is the original resting place of the master sword. It’s the same place it rested in Link to the past.
Some reason it was moved to the temple of time.
Can Nintendo stop adding fcking robots in loz!! !?
Just realized that the snowpeak ruins also have wolves in it
Perhaps the Forest Temple was the original place for the Triforce or the Master Sword as it was in Link to the Past? Either could then have been moved closer to the royal castle as Hyrule developed from a people dwelling in the forest into a civilizational people. The Forest Temple would then be a proto Temple of Time with it’s similar inner sanctum.
I always loved this level, but if someone had asked me, "What was the original purpose of the Forest Temple in OoT?", I would have replied that it's not the kind of game to have these kinds of hidden backstories. This actually makes a pretty good case.
Idk if this has been said before in the comments but it makes sense that each of the temples is guarding an entrance to the sacred realm as in each temple link travels directly to the sacred realm from the boss chamber. Fire and Shadow notably aren't in ornamental chambers but I surmise that the portals themselves are natural and the temples were built around them, the volcanic nature of the room the portal in the fire temple is and bongo bongos influence could have alerted or removed the platforms that were built to access the portals over time.
Over explaining below:
Forest has that room and might've been the first one discovered outside of the temple of light one/first one entirely. Huge defensive measures taken since knowledge of these portals must've been scarce at first.
Fire was found in the volcano in a den with the fire dragon volvagia. Temple built to secure dragon and portal. Gorons mess it up and kill the dragon. Oops
Water portal found under lake, cue temple made around it. Giant room with portal on floor is weird, and we can assume that room is always filled with water as morphas presence wouldn't have been long enough to stain the walls that way. Or maybe he did, either way makes sense to keep the portal submerged unless being used.
Shadow is a head scratcher since the temple was designed to retain prisoners, but could be likely that the excavation of the prison led to the discovery of the portal and it was later annexed into the prison via mining and prison renamed to Shadow temple. Hire me zeltik I swear.
Spirit is simple, found portal built temple, could be how ganondork knew about the entryways in the first place being in his homeland. Also I like whoever said that rauru vanished nobooru before the witches got her again cuz of the color of her ball thingy.
Light is obviously a portal and maybe the main one or something idk. Zelda is cool 10/10 have you guys played this game is p good
I always found the Forest Temple a very comfortable place and very fitting in the game in all ways, ambience, design and layout. The prototypical OOT dungeon. That and maybe Spirit Temple really fit well in the game in every way.
How you make it this pretty?
sorry i drop my phone .
The Forest Temple houses the Black Materia
The music in this Dungeon is my absolute favorite track in the entire game! It's so absolutely harrowing & spooky! I love it to death! Lol TerminalMontage absolutely NAILED his animated video of this Dungeon.
Best temple
Great video!
I still feel the same eerie feeling with this temple and the snow peak ruins in twilight princess
The Forest temple does not even look like an actual temple. Because it's got a Backyard Like an outside. Hallway, stairs, bottom wall a mini lake that's not a temple. It looks more like a house or a mansion not a temple
He’s actually 19 when he wakes up. And 12 when the pull out the sword. Plus the 7 year he was trap in the temple of time
