God of War Ragnarok (PS4, PS5) is a big game with lots of story elements to dissect. Let’s talk about the story, the ending, who …

Narratively, this game is juggling so much (and it does so phenomenally).
When Kratos visits the Norns, they tell him that Kratos of SPARTA will die, and they weren't wrong! The spartan in Kratos died during his speech about opening his heart to the world. Sparing the people in midgard was such a crucial point in the story.
I was hoping to learn more about how Faye died.
Was she sick? Did she die in battle? What happened??
Unless the answer was in some lore I missed I'm a bit disappointed we didn't get a deeper dive into HER story…
Why Odin disguised as Tyr explained everyone about the Mask? Thru himself under the Bus?
Ok I need someone to tell me how Kratos is a 1 note character ether game reviewers are dumb as ass or forget what happened in this OG series because god forbid we remember anything that’s from 10-15 years ago
PS
you can play the OG series on your PS5
And the story of raganork sucks compared to the OG story telling
I know this is an old video but I just played the game at long last
I kinda understand what they tried to do with the ending and that point in which Kratos decides to "be better" right after killing all those midgardians but the ending indeed felt a bit soft and small after so much anticipation for the big RAGNAROK, it wasn't bad but I would have liked a bigger more epic and harsh battle against Thor maybe involving Jörmundgander, they played with the way Baldur dies in the myths having somehow Loki still set it up with mistletoe so I was expecting something like that with Thor and the Snake and even more so with Odin and Fenrir, I still can't believe they didn't use that badass giant Fenrir to chew him up at the end maybe saving Atreus. Maybe the thing that bothered me the most about the ending was Sindri and how out of character he was since Brok's death, I mean ofc grief changes people, but we have Freya whose son was killed by Kratos himself and somehow she is friends with him again, and then we have Sindri… our old friend and somewhat of a comic relief for the old game placing all the blame on Atreus, a young man, when Odin was the one who did it all and fooled all of them, idk it felt worng and there wasn't any closure to that part either, maybe they'll have him as an antagonist later on? Maybe not but I still don't like how they treated him
In shor Thor fight too small, Sindri's actions out of character
I still think the game is almost perfect but the ending wasn't what I was expecting
I just finished the game yesterday and I also was thinking the ending was soft. It wasn't bad, but also not as impactful as it could have been. This was Ragnarok but it didn't feel epic at all. It was just a level like most other levels in the game with Ragnarok happening in the background or off in the distance somewhere. It didn't feel like I was part of it.
Also, for someone who was presented as preparing for this for thousands of years Odin did was most anyone would do in the situation. I was expecting him to have a clever ace up his sleeve but he didn't at all which was disappointing. Still an excellent game though overall.
My Favorite moment of ragnarok was when everyone was calling kratos general before they went to Asgard. That alone was having my boy rage before but he just embraced it. Oh and when that guy tackled that dragon from freyr ‘s boat! I was like 😮
Probably too late to share an opinion, but i would like to say a words on Odin.
I thought Odin, in my guess, was Loki. Even tho some of part the lore may create plot hole and i might not knows Norse Mythology very much, but i thought having actual Loki destroyed his own universe would make sense than the Dev version that leave some unanswered question, especially the prophecy that Kratos and Atreus seen were actually a different world before they see their own future path.
Unlike Kratos who also destroyed his world and try to live normal life even tho he want to die originally, Loki just continue his madness to gain knowledge to find whatever in that small greenlight that required for the mask, willingly came to another Norse world, to do far worse non-stop til his fate sealed when he step in another Norse world but in GoW universe where his demise finally come, a very good twist, but in my own guessed.
Idk if they going to make 3rd game or not aside remake the classics, i really hope that some unanswered question in this game can be explain for final times.
After being a major fan of the series for almost two decades that ending scene made me tear up so much. It gave the ending Kratos deserved after going through the whole original saga and finally fixing his wrongs and being worthy of being important to people in a positive light.
The ending definitely encase that you can always be better and one day you can a better than you were. You just need to open your heart to emotion to learn those things
I really took my time playing this game. Maybe you forgot, but Kratos had a wife & daughter in the first game.
I'd be so down to play as a super dark and edgy Loki fully tatted with piercings, a single player adventure with stealth and the Nemesis system. Maybe we can can Sindri one last time? And even get to play as Angrboða 😭 Jkjk, but I just finished the game now with 100% completion. Ending was great to me, as I fought Odin I thought this could have been a lot more intense but the entire journey itself made up for it.
It was suburb drama in the dialogue and I would’ve rather had it more gritty.
I loved Odin. Such a great villain.
I think the final mural for kratos should be viewed through the lens of fayes love for him as she made the mural. She saw in him what no one else did and inspired and lead him to fufill her "prohphecy" just before the war in the camp you can tell hes grown so weary in not understanding his purpose or what fayes plans were and feeling like he cant escape his cycle of vengence and pantheon destruction. I feel like once he sees the mural he kind of breaks down as he feels fayes love and belief in him. She knew he would pull through she had faith in him despite odin telling him no one ever worshiped or admired him, his family always did all along.
I've been waited so long to watch this video. I just finished the game about an hour ago. Man did I love it! I choked up a bit a few times during the game and espesaly in the end. Now that I've played it, it's defiantly more deserving then Elden Ring. Not saying Elden Ring was bad. It wasn't. But GOW Ragnorok was way better them Elden Ring. But that's my opinion.
People are complaining that kratos didnt die, but OLD kratos died in this game. With him opening his heart he completely killed his old self
Since you actually do find Tyr in a prison in Niflheim and they’ve already mentioned that he’s associated with other pantheons they do have the door cracked for adventures into other mythologies. And of course there is a sense of incompleteness specifically with Sindri and his emotional turmoil (catalyst for the next game?)
I LIKE everyone’s personality chiefly Odins. As I play through this game i became more interested In the story because of the personalities and not the boxed in hack and slash.
The only thing I would have added to this game that would have made the finale better is just more Surtr/Ragnarök. There’s only a couple of instances where he does something at the final battle. He was severely under utilized. I would have added another running sequence like when kratos was carrying injured Freyr. Maybe Atreus gets knocked unconscious by a falling boulder and you have to carry him racing back to the Midgard gate, hitting the qte’s to fend off remaining enemies trying to attack you and also maneuvering around Surtr’s rampage. That would have been a nice little final push to the end.
But…Everything else was still chef’s kiss tho. And I personally liked the way Odin was killed. It made perfect sense considering everyone’s character arcs.
I feel like sidri could almost become a villain. Dude went dark.
Loved the Thor's Daughter story line
Nothing about the dwarves and Heimdall?
I was expecting a Logan (2017) esque ending for Kratos but was much more satisfied with what we got.
“Open your heart. It is your nature…I was wrong.”
This SHOOK me.
The worst part about the game is by far the RPG elements and also the fact that you can’t turn off boss checkpoints in the story
I would like a game with Faye. We could know the story but knowing that Kratos and Atreus can't, how in the world did she got a weapon like the Leviathan, the interactions with the dwarves, the fight in the valley against Thor, and, for me the coolest thing: she said that when she met Kratos they wanted to kill each other, so, yeah, an unwinnable fight against the God of War himself.
I REALLY do not think that Kratos' ending is having to see off his son. It's his redemption. That's what the end panel in that last prophecy meant imo.
The story was overly sappy imo. Angerboda section almost made me quit the game. Writers really dropped the ball with ragnarok imo. The gameplay was great. Hated the story
There should have been a final boss fight with Ragnarok. Huge missed opportunity. Ending felt unfulfilling without that. The game is literally called Ragnarok. They have done boss fights of that scale before. I was pretty disappointed.
Absolutely loved it. I did think the end was a little underwhelming considering they said there wasn't gonna be a 3rd game in this specific series but I thought the whole game was great. I have two young sons so there were alot of story moments that hit for me. I have to say though, even leading up to the very end with Odin, I kept thinking something was gonna happen that would explain that horn being blown in 2018 when Kratos was taking Atreus to Freya after he was passed out and hurt. I was also surprised there wasn't more of a story to the mask. Either way I thought it was an amazing game and I loved my 40 hours with it.
Just finished the game. At the start i didn't like Odin's character. I kinda wanted a more intimidating character but towards the latter half of the game i realized why they went in that direction. He grew on me. It was a great choice to not make him intimidating
The ending when Kratos fights through Ragnarok needed to be of much bigger scale, we needed to see a shot of each army going against one another! Where are all the soldiers of the other realms gathered?? I was expecting to see a shot similar to that of Avengers Endgame! Otherwise, brilliant game. What a masterpiece!!
I loved everything up to and including the blowing of Gallajorn. The ragnarok was disappointing. Felt relatively small scale and rushed.
When I compare it to the opening of GOW3 it just didn't measure up.
I def liked Ragnarok more than 2018 GoW, the different amount of enemy and boss types is what did it for me. Plus I thought the writing and the story eas just as good as the last except Ragnaroks ending was def a bit rushed. But all the gameplay and combat stuff made up for any of that…
Just finished it !
Finally get to watch this video
This game was easily the best game of this generation so far for me, hands down.
The story needed a little more baking, I feel the pacing is bad and drags on a lot especially with the Vanaheim stuff, and Ragnarok is super rushed, it was literally one corridor. Overall it's a really fun and amazing game but I do think 2018 game is way more focused and better directed even if game ay wise Ragnarok is way better. Odin was great, he is a mafia boss and horrible father overall.
One thing I also think it was extra and pointless unlike 2018 is that the one shot thing was not necessary, there's no point it was necessary, it even makes things look awkward in some scenes like when Brok dies.
Atreus and Kratos have no overarching goals in this one. You think it is to stop Ragnarök and prevent Kratos from dying, but think again. They do everything to bring that about, not to prevent it. The story was boring, directionless and meandering and the action was lame.
Just like GoW 2018, I loved every minute of playing this game but was left feeling unfulfilled by the ending.
It would have been more satisfying for Kratos to go out in a blaze of glory, sacrificing himself in the final battle to save Atreus. Or perhaps have Atreus save Kratos from death, or even sacrifice himself to save Kratos. To me, that would have really put a ribbon on the father/son arc and felt satisfying and moving.
There was so much foreshadowing for something like this, from the mural revealed at the end of 2018, to Kratos talking about death and sacrifice throughout the game.
Mid-game: "Death can have me when it earns me"
Before the final battle: "Wars are won by those who are willing to sacrifice everything"
In the end, all that was sacrificed were two side characters mainly there for comic relief in Brok and Freyr.
For me, it just felt like a typical superhero movie ending. All the main heroes survived, the villains were vanquished and, bar Sindri, everyone just gets to go on happily with their lives.
The worship thing being so meaningful for Kratos also felt weird. At what point in any of the games did he appear to have such a desire to be worshipped by the masses? Just because Odin mentioned it to him suddenly he got FOMO? Lol. For me it came out of nowhere so wasn't a satisfying conclusion to his story at all.
I don't regret playing the game but just left me with a weird unsatisfying feeling walking away from it.
I wanted the feeling I got when I finished The Last of Us Part 1, or Red Dead Redemption 1 or 2.
I didn't get that.
I have been waiting to watch this. I finally got through the game and it’s 10/10. My first after beating it was, “what now?”
I thought when Kratos saw the mural and being worshiped i noticed he was clean shaven. I want to see a clean shaven Kratos as a throwback to his earlier games
Just finished the story and a bunch of side content after 40 hours last night. I had to make sure to come back to this video.
I had a blast, and will definitely be going for the platinum.
My only real gripe is the Crater. It was a bunch of fun exploring, fighting dragons, and learning about the fight with Faye and Thor. But as I finished fighting the last Dreki, I had noticed in the menu that I completed everything in the area and there was nothing left to see or do. To me, that section was anticlimactic. I think it would have been neat to see (or even play as) Faye fighting Thor and see the destruction of the town that would become the Crater.
(But really, that’s just a nitpick in a fantastic package of a game)
I didn't think they were going to kill Kratos off anyway. I figured the prophecy would change.
I loved Kratos’ story-arc, but I think the series going forward would benefit more from following Loki. It makes sense that Ragnarök is in effect Kratos’ swan song, which would explain what the Norn meant when she referred to Kratos’ story being over. In which case, Loki would be the only viable protagonist. It’s worth highlighting Heimdall’s dialogue with Loki, wherein he states that Loki is chaos incarnate, leading to Heimdall’s epic line that he foresaw cities burning when Loki opened his mouth. That description has laid the groundwork for the developers to turn Loki into a character whose fierceness could rival Kratos in the original trilogy. Think Ledger’s Joker with magical powers! After all, we’ve only seen a teenage Loki, so the next time we see him, he will have matured with age, and thus could very well be a more compelling protagonist then Kratos ever was (That would be very difficult to pull off but given the narrative powerhouse that has been Santa Monica Studios for the past to GOW games, it’s not impossible).
Given the potential that Loki has going forward, I would love to see the next game focus on him as he travels to various lands in his search for the remaining giants. We know from GOW 2018 that Tyr made contact with Egyptian, Celtic, and Japanese Mythologies – plus, depending on how one interprets the pictures on certain walls in Tyr’s Temple/Vault, possibly Aztec/Mayan Mythologies as well. So it follows that Loki will be headed to one or more of these realms in the next game.
Also, and this isn’t a major point, but given that Loki is an archetypal trickster deity, he can easily be slotted into any mythological universe. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if in a future game Loki were to wholly assume the role of another trickster deity in said mythology, as opposed to being a fish out of water like Kratos was in the past two games. For example, using the possible setting of Celtic Mythology, Loki could assume the identity of the god Lugh, who like Loki possessed trickster characteristics, and who functioned as a saviour like figure, in which case the storyline would likely draw upon the myths surrounding Lugh.
Ultimately, the question I think is whether Loki will spend an entire game in one mythological setting or whether he will travel to various mythological settings in the course of one game.
