The strategy around Epic Games Store has basically been throw money at free games and exclusives, but the Steam ecosystem is still far ahead in terms of features and usability. It doesn't surprise me one bit that Epic hasn't made that much of a dent.

epic games is a devil's bargain.
On one hand, you get all the free games you could ever want, legally too!
On the other hand. the cons are…
it used to be spyware (I don't know if it still is, but i'd never trust a company again after something that big.)
Tencent. 'nuff said right there.
Exclusivity, scanning your steam wishlist in a predatory manner and making it so you HAVE to go to them.
incredibly hostile to the user.
no support forums (to my knowledge)
as well as just outright lying, saying things were supposed to get better for the customer and hten just not improving anything at all.
This is the kind of thing that makes people grow a pair of sealegs, ya scurvy dog.
I will never use Epic on principle; they tried to use exclusives to force us to go there, as you stated. That is incredibly anti-consumer
if they want people to use the epic games store than its time they actually invest into the user experience of the store. I think the free games and the 6 month exclusivity period on games are a great way to get people to download epic games store but then they see that the launcher is dookie and dont spend any money or want to use the platform outside of the free games.
I’m completely fine with steam being a monopoly, because it’s just simply the best service. It’s so convenient to do basically anything on Steam and it has the best games.
the only way to beat steam is:
make a good launcher that give to the user the chance to add games outside your store (games from emulators, from Steam and other launchers, unnofficial ones),
create a good sociial network
sell the same games that Steam have on catalog, but forcing the publishers to remove all bloatware/DRM/other launchers from the games (it is impossible).
in the other way we have only tho choices: GoG for DRM Free games, and Steam for others. and if you can byuy the same DRM FREE games on Steam, why not?.
It intends to be a Steam competitor yet will kill its other games at the expense of Fortnite.
In the words of an ex Rocket League developer, “If you’re not Fortnite, they don’t give a shit about you.”
To this day I've never purchased a game from the Epic Games store. I do make sure to cash in the free games weekly thought for at least the last few years.
it still lacks a ton of features that steam has. like reviews, it list player reviews but not where you can actually read them. just a number and that can be changed without reading player reviews. its the number one reason i dont use it
epic will never beat steam is not the first time that there was store try try do that ea have ten years ago make origin store to only sell there own titles was complete a failure after ten years they dismantle there store and make ea play to be use a app to start there title pretty much what rockstar does and ubi soft with there app. i think tim sweeney is loser just like a annoying puppy to try bite steam heels and bribe people with 100 or 88 selling share i don`t mind for a competition but is the way he conduct you cant force customers to buy a store front i dont like epic also have poor account protection in the past i lost a account two times the same account i have never lost any account at steam have a better way to protect your account to be stolen the same epic will bite the dust in next 5 years unless he stop with this stupid exclusives
EGS is still a terrible experience. Only thing I use is for is Fortnite (obviously) and even then I boot it via the game’s .exe so I don’t have to use the launcher in any capacity.
A bit late, but I barely used the Epic Games Store, the only tome I did was to use fortnite on PC, but when I tried to play on PC, my account got hacked. 2 years ago on my birthday, I found out my account got hacked, I assume I clicked on a malicious link. I contacted steam, they helped out almost immediately. I got my account back and changed the email and password. Epic meanwhile, didnt really help me. I contacted them, and they asked for my email. Keep in mind that the email was changed.
I needed customer service from epic and it took two weeks for them to respond. And it was something steam would have handled in minutes. Steam is just a better service
I used the Epic Game Store to play Hades in Early Access and I don't regret it, but the second it was available on Steam I dropped the platform.
will never use the epic store. no matter how many "free games" they trying to rub on peoples faces.
It's just a matter of time Epic will fail than I'm going to say see Tim I told you so your so called vision went down the toilet, Us game do not want multiple platforms just look at the movie industry it is literally all over the places, No streaming service has a complete library of everything then top it all off the ridiculous price just a rent a movie is more the DVD or Bluray rent, And then there's the other problem if that service decides to close the doors you lose out on all your library videos you had paid for in full take the Funimation which you cannot be transferred over to Crunchyroll man this sucks for all those poor people who spent hundreds and thousands of dollars on digital copies. Something do have a place with monopoly but some things do not have a place with monopoly, To me digital copies of anything one place is all we need physical copies on the other hand that is a different story altogether then yes monopoly would apply here If there is a freedom to choose where to buy.
Steam has more sales, epic takes longer to download and install games, steam has better chat, steam you can see actual player reviews
They had to shutdown fallguys studio cause their player base is not big enouh without steam 😅
Metro Exodus, I remember I was waiting for this game, and then it went exclusive to Epic Store, I was pissed… did not want to invest in a platform that behaves like a console, first party ok but paying for third party exclusives, eat a bag of Richards, still this day I have not touched Epic Games, you are correct out of spite, with all the free games it never even crossed my mind to check them out, they played themselves.
Tim Sweeny still the weenie.
