Okay, just finished watching the movie with a bunch of my D&D friends and we all loved it. The whole theater seemed to be laughing and enjoying the show. It watched like I was actually playing a game with a bunch of friends, goofing around but serious about the game.
Made LESS than HALF of it's budget back🤣 worse than trash
watching this take after actually seeing the movie last night made me… sad. i've been DMing for a while and convinced my party of newbies to come along, and we all had an absolute blast. there's something for every level of D&D knowledge in it, and i'm fairly sure people who know nothing about the game can enjoy it too. The are easter eggs aplenty for experienced players. it actually manages to avoid one of the D&D community's major faults: gatekeeping… (btw, you're allowed to enjoy something even if it wasn't exclusively made for YOU, the world's main character. and conflicting WOTC with screenwriters and directors who made this film is not the way to go imo.)
It actually was a great movie, not woke at all, and if it was I didn’t see it
In response to you talking about Vecna stat blocks and source books, any real DM knows they can make up their own stuff, just like you mentioned you can make your own Vecna stat block. I don't even use modules, and the few times I did, it was for fillers because I didn't have time and I want a blue print that I ended up completely changing anyway. I don't spend money on D and D. My issue and only issue with this topic is when I play with people now, they are whiny and don't really care about the game. They have expectations that don't mirror mine and are unwilling to try to get better, take it more seriously, and play long sessions. My games would run a minimum of 12 hours and go as long as 48 hours on rare occasions. This new generation act like they ran a marathon or did molly and went clubbing all night. "We played 4 hours and today im so exhausted." I dont even know how you play 4 hours a week with role playing and being descriptive. Thats like 1 encounter.
OG D and D heads are not their target audience. They cater to the cheesy D and D heads who want a light, fun, and approach. Which is fine. What bothers me is new people to D and D think thats what D and D is, but its not. DMs have different styles and flavor. I started in 1st edition, but I was hella young so I didn't really get it. I really played 2e and 3.5 is my edition of choice. I run dark, brutal games and no subject is taboo. I expect my players to take the game seriously and if you're talking about a movie, sporting game, you can take a break from the table and talk about it away from the game. It's fine to be a light hearted relaxed DM who runs PG games, and anything in between. I am not here to slam DMs who don't run my style, but what I don't like is people trying to make D and D a certain way. At the end of the day, I wont pay for this movie and I already predicted it runs a Marvel format and its got cheesy one liners, predictable, great special effects, and a fun movie to watch though lame with little substance. What would be nice is to make D and D movies that can be fun and simple and others that are dark and complex, but then again, ANY fantasy movie ever made is D and D to me. These major companies are here to make money, not cater to a small group of players who want something else.
It's not hard to make a fantasy film for fans of the game as well as casuals. It's really not
So, how does it feel now, knowing that, again, you gave a corporation the benefit of the doubt, and interviews with the directors have come out where they boldly said the quiet part out loud, and proclaimed that they went out of their way to emasculate the leading male characters specifically because they thought it would be a funny and FRESH way to go?
Sounds like, rather than making the movie for a target audience, they are, instead, making it to demoralize a certain audience instead.
Im a D&D fan and i just saw it. I thought it was really fun. Very funny and quippy like Marvel but also displays creative solutions that evoke the vibes of a fun campaign with friends, where creative players and DM go outside the box with solutions to obstacles. I really dug it. More "serious" and boring D&D players might not agree, but for me, this felt like a funny campaign i would have with close friends.
So you're saying dnd campaigns aren't usually funny and goofy, an overly serious campagn is boring.
I loved the trailer. The movie looks fun. Doesn’t take itself too seriously. And yes. You’re exactly right. You aren’t the target audience. It’s for the casual player and those who haven’t played at all.
IT'S WOKE GARBAGE ! WEAK MEN, UBER POWERFUL WOMEN.
Can't wait. Everything tells me it's gna be a weak@$$ flop, but it juuust may surprise us. Let's get out there either way & support it, folks!
Might be an unpopular opinion, but I think if they made a film of this scale specifically targeting D&D players, it would be a box office bomb. There are enough D&D players, sure, but not enough that would care about a film based on their beloved game, in a campaign setting they may not even be playing in ESPECIALLY if they’re older gen players.
I think they made a film everyone can enjoy, while planting PLENTY of things that D&D players will recognize and maybe even resonate with. I think that was the best decision from a financial standpoint, and I’m stoked to go see it with my party 😄
It's for the normies, since they're assuming that is DnD fanatics will already go watch it.
Honor Among Thieves isn't a game system product like the Vecna adventure. It doesn't need to be something that would actually work at a D&D table. I'm sure it's absolutely aimed at a more casual audience (hence explaining things like pointing out what an owlbear is). That doesn't mean it isn't also keeping existing fans in mind. Unlike a game module it doesn't have to be either/or.
I like this for a few reasons quality actors and directors and entertainment factor that for non gamers is a good movie action and great soundtrack
I expect it to be like a mid marvel movie, not great probaly just fine.
A few joke might be funny and it'll be fun when the thing from the game is on screen.
Of course D&D players are the target demographic. Sorry, not everyone expects them to tow the line on all the minutia.
This is clearly tounge in cheek.
That said. I'm not sure what the rant on Vecna is about when the big bad is clearly Tsass Tam and his Red wizards from the campaign world of Faerun. (Probably the most popular of D&D campaign settings.)
Thier source is clearly not Grey Hawk or Eberon (There are more than a few hints that this is, in fact, Faerun.)
From what I saw it was 90% spot on (owlbear, dimdoor-druid things were off but rule of cool always applied to druids).
Not sure what you were expecting… or maybe you never used the Faerun world setting.
I've played the game for quite a bit more than a few years (much of it as a DM)… looked reallly good to me.
I especially like how they had fun with the Bard class… often looked upon with derision by most of our players.
This suggests a deep understanding of the game by the writers…. a very good sign. That they delivered the joke and even non-players could laugh at it suggests is another good sign.
I think the Guardians of the Galaxy tounge in cheek approach will go over quite well entertaining the fans (especially those familiar with Faerun) and general audiences alike.
The trailer gave me flashbacks to amazon's rop
