I do hope the Rainbow Road scene is part of gearing up for the climactic battle, and NOT the final shot of the movie.
Also, I've heard rumors about story-beats involving sick Bowser Jr. (why Bowser is seeking the stars,) and Mario and Luigi's father being the greatest old hero of the Mushroom Kingdom (why everyone expects M & L to save them.)
I hope both of those are false, though the Bowser Jr stuff would help give Bowser actual motivation and lessen how evil he really is, if you wanted him to team up with Mario and Luigi in future movies.
