I have sat through DECADES of Mario making noises in video games but the argument is you "wouldn't want to sit though an entire movie of that". But I've already spent HOURS of my life literally doing exactly that.
After seeing all the trailers, promos and previews Chris Pratt's Mario actually ain't bad at all.

haven't seen a goomba in ether this trailer or the second so far, so maybe crisp rat was gonna say goomba, but was stopped and told to use koopa instead. Or has no idea and just sounded dumb.

So, with the second trailer out, it is quite clear the Mario voice is pretty fine.
I agree with what you said about Chris pratt
I'm thinking (hoping) that maybe they'll go for a mostly silent protagonist role for Mario. Like an ultimate double fake-out, have him talk about as much sense as a Minion.

The funniest comment I've heard about that Chris Pratt video talking about his experience with Mario and his role in the movie went something like:
"Why does Chris Pratt pronouncing the word "Koopas" sounds like he's saying a slur?"
Which is the funniest s**t ever because it's true.
My guess is that this movie will be like 92% perfect all around, and then
Chris PrattMario will just…ruin it every time he opens his mouth.

Another thing of note for Charles' Mario voice is that he did a lot of actual talking in his audition for the voice. If you look up the clips, it's actually a really solid voice, not grating at all. I think he just kinda plays up the high pitched "It's-a me!" of the voice for sound clips because it's more memorable that way
