It kind of released in Japan as an fds game called Kaettekita Mario Bros. The European version is essentially just that game but without advertisements or gambling.
This is a NES port of Kaettekita Mario Bros., released on the Famicom Disk System in 1988, hence the 1988 copyright date on the title screen. It has all the changes shown here except for the demos before certain levels showing how to defeat enemies.
It was released in collaboration with a food company and features ads from that company before you start a game. It has two modes. The classic mode shown here and a second mode where the objective was to reach a certain score.
In the second mode, if you reach 100,000 points you get a cutscene, and another at 200,000 points. If you reached 200,000 points, you could send your disk (or maybe a photo of the score) into Nintendo and be entered into a draw to win a prize. Also, the first time you get game over you can try to win continues on a slot machine.
The advantage of this version over Mario Bros. Classic is that it saves your high score. The disadvantage is the aforementioned lack of the demo screens.
Also, something very important in both versions that isn’t shown here – it contains the icicles from the arcade version that are missing from most ports, including the original NES port. It makes the game from level 16 onward much more intense.
Notice that the NES version has give you only one extra life. The arcade version has extra life’s when you got more points.
6:35 You mean sidestepper?
I don’t understand why nintendo improved the german version of mariobros for the nes 10 years later then the initial release of the famicom version, maybe they were just jealous on atari for making a superior version of mariobros for their atari xe,so hahaha🤣
High score 80A,A00. Man, this dudes so good at the game he managed to get hexadecimal point values!!
Interesting trivia: the reason your Retron HD has audio inconsistencies is because it uses an aftermarket clone of the 2A03 where the 50% and 25% duty cycles are swapped around in the chip’s data. A 50% duty cycle is a basic square wave (the same waveform generated by low-cost musical toys and ice cream trucks), while the 25% duty cycle has a more “buzzy” sounding timbre. In layman’s terms, the Super Mario Brothers theme sounds like “Deh-deh-deh” instead of “doot-doot-doot”
Yes, it came out in other countries besides Germany, I am Spanish and I just got a PAL ESP unit although with nuances. It is a German unit, but to which the official Nintendo distributor for Spain in those years included an instruction manual in Spanish and a sticker on the outside of the box that says "includes instructions in Spanish". The game is a real rarity and in my country I have not been able to see one like it.
ive been looking for a copy of this for a while
I actually play the europe version on a rom hack of mario all stars on the nes
How you have it? is only in Europe
Say right here one more time

Why didn't they release it here😡
In super Mario world the Gameboy advance version is harder and you can play as Luigi player 1
This is actually based from a 1988 Famicom Disk System version of Mario Bros which also has some interesting differences too. Also as for the original NES Version skipping stage 2, from what I read before, a US Arcade version skipped that level as well.
YES! Mario Bros. is my favorite arcade game, i even had the pleasure to play it on an original arcade cabinet, and the experience was wonderful. Thanks for covering this one, deemech!
Meanwhile Mario Super Sluggers:
Exactly what regions/parts of Europe was this released in? Because it was not released here in Scandinavia, that's for sure…
The is clearly better than the 1983 release in every way except for one: they left out the Title Music. Oh well…
I had to get the emulation of this game cause I do own the original NES version but I was always disappointed with it considering that I loved the Arcade version and it was my first introduction to this game. So the NES looking weird and missing the cut scenes really left me lacking. I saw a video on the History of Mario Bros. and in it mentioned the 93 versions and I looked it up, and overall it is my favorite version outside of the arcade original.
I can confirm this 4:36
I own Mario Bros Returns on the Famicom Disc system this version seems to be based off that version but with the ads and other fan fare it has taken out. It graphically was a good improvement over the original Famicom version from 83. Wow! I never knew this Euro version existed.
know I mostly grew up with the GBA remake but… seeing how there was a version in-between that plays well… indeed is somethin new for me! always enjoyed the simple gameplay, but the NES original felt too clunky for me, so er… I stayed with the GBA version.
also er… dunno how many did it given how said GBA version tracks scores but… I reached the max in both that and… the level count, just won't go past level 99!
I've played Mario Bros. on the GameBoy Advance with Super Mario Advance and Super Mario Advance 4.
can play the minigames in super paper mario they are very fun
Speaking of obscured Mario games, demeech I manage to be able to find an arcade that had Mario kart arcade gp dx.
i played the NES version before imma try this on an emulator
I don't know if you like requests, but can you go over SMB The Lost Levels?
I think Mario Bros. is a pretty good classic, just it and Ice Climber suffer from having midair controls as stiff as a plank of wood.
This is actually pretty cool! But yeah… Freely moving in mid air in this version is definitely appreciated! Makes the game MUCH better in my opinion. Makes me sad that only Europe got this version.
It's why I think the version that comes with the Super Mario Advance series and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga are the definitive versions. Lol.
Loving the arcade series!
British people: I see that as an absolute win
Bruh I’m European & a massive Mario fan myself and I never heard of this version, how crazy !
Screw you, America!
Never heard about this game. It does look pretty fun, i might go emulate this. This is my favorite between the five? arcade nintendo games. i think wrecking crew was at the arcade right? Also, EUROPE NEVER GOTTEN MARIO SUPER SLUGGERS?(YES, I AM SHOUTING AGAIN TO MAKE A POINT) I hope they got the gamecube version, super mario baseball. I also played mario clash and it is really fun, nothing compared to VB wario land, but still a good time. Just emulate this game though, no one want to see the 3d technology. Great video as always, never fail to disappointed.
Never have heard of this version before!
I'm from Denmark, and I've never heard of this game.
There should be a modern-day remake of Mario Bros. with updated and new enemies. Also, different stage layouts could be nice.
Could you cover super Mario Sunshine64 its a flash game and I remember playing it as a wee lad
Here's an Idea for an episode, Mario Hoops 3 on 3
"Why does Japan get all the good stuff"
Thomas the Tank Engine fans relate to you so much
Man I’ve been so exhausted from arguing with Nintendo bootlickers, hope there aren’t any here!
I’m still mad disappointed from that direct
Japan gets the good stuff
This video reminded me to play my daily round of Luigi Bros. on Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
Never knew this was released in Europe an I never knew Super Sluggers was never released in Europe lol
Japan ALWAYS has it better than us Americans!
