The only reason I heard of and wanted to play this game since childhood was from those PlayStation Underground Demo discs my brother had. I watched those videos they have in the backlog called "Cool Moves" where people that worked on several games give you insights and tips for finding in game treasures, secrets and giving you tips on how to beat bosses.
The video I watched showed how to beat Bunji really fast by spamming your missles after he charges you, away from the pillars he'd hide behind. Keep him against the walls toward the front so he won't run and hide and heal himself. After playing this for the first time (literally last night), I realized how difficult it was if you used all your missles beforehand.
I also didn't get a manual with my copy, so I know the pain.
This game vibes reminds me Mad World
My first exposure to Gumgrave was its seqyel, Gungrave Overdose. 10/10

Was always obsessed with this game since I was barely 4 years old, still have the original ps2 cd, I still play it now and then, know it all inside n out, still gives me the chills – this one to me was so much better than overdose and the new "gore" , it just had that right "gungrave" thing to it

Something that everybody seems to miss (because the game does a shitty job of telling you) is you can use L3 while moving to jog. you're still not fast, but you're slightly faster and can still shoot.
I appreciate the very accurate review of the game I wish more reviewers would feel the same way about gungrave Gore although it does drag a little longer than it should carries over much of the design philosophy of The originals

I would like to mention that you can actually still sprint and fire your guns. The input is awkward, you need to hold down circle and L1 simultaneously then can shoot while running. I found during a recent playthrough whilst fighting the boss you mentioned being too fast
I know this video is a year old, but you can actually move at a jog while shooting if you press in the left stick, which is a horrible button to use for it, so i just rebound it in my emulator to R2, and daaaamn does this game open up some cool looking combat if you use it
