what about barking? Dog is 17 weeks old and wants to bark at people through our backyard gate
Omg does no one on this thread have a good old fashioned MUTT? how about going down to your local shelter and looking at the 30 pit bulls and pit mixes wagging their tails with such hope in their eyes. I have nothing against purebred dogs, I would love to own one, but all my dogs have been rescues except for one. And I mean RESCUED where I found them tied to poles and propane tanks. Sorry to be such a bummer I absolutely love Joel’s videos but don’t forget they apply to all dogs not just a $10,000 ones.
Backman, man I watch tons of dog trainers on YT but when I think about "realistic and practical" dog training I always refer back to you. No other dog trainer comes close to the honesty you display and the real world training techniques you exhibit. Anytime someone has questions I will for sure refer them to you 🎉 we appreciate your teachings!
Thanks for all your videos! It helped me and onyx 🙏🏽 but I have a question… when other dogs get mad at him for being high energy and playful and they show teeth or check him, he kinda catches on but if he doesn’t I think he is in danger cuz I don’t think he can defend himself lol he never uses his mouth for anything except tug of war and is never irritated by another dog. He is dominant but nicely dominant imo. He never met a mean male yet…. Some dogs also go crazy at him thru the fence then after a while of passing by they stop and just watch him cuz he doesn’t react or he just tries to get out of the situation and puts his ears down and walk away or he’s nervous and poops in front of them or pees but not on there territory.
Thanks!
I was hoping to hear some tips on raising puppies younger than this video. Due to unfortunate circumstances in some situations, raising very young ones can be very challenging.
I got my GS puppy at 4 weeks old. She is now 6 weeks. She sits, comes (most times), and is 90%potty trained. (Never pooped inside) I haven't been able to find any videos for puppies our age. We are working on nipping, and crate training. It can be frustrating when we have such a young puppy to figure out what stages to teach her when she doesn't have a mother but us. What suggestions do you have for raising a 4 week old and up.
What about separation training then? When should that start, ideally?
Uh… my puppy has been aggressively nipping since 6 weeks old (now 10 weeks) and has a lot of energy. I wish she was calm and cuddly. She sits too, has that down cold.
Thanks!
Thank you 😭
My australian shepherd is 2 years now. I survived puppyhood. Thanks for your work, you helped me a lot with behaviors where reinforcement just doesn’t work. I have great results. My dog is not perfect, but she’s pretty good.
I wish I had this information when I got my puppy😢
Best lesson i needed to remember 😊
Just found your channel and I’m soooooo happy I did! I subbed! I really love your channel!
Thank you!
Why does no one tell you this when you buy a puppy? This is quite important information that should be as known as the command "sit". Thanks for clarifying this!
There's gotta be something to do about the nipping. We have a 10 week old American bulldog. Shes playing tug a war with the kids pants and shirt. She tries with me but I do correct her like a mama dog would. Should the kids correct her or just me when I see her do it to them. I get she's a pup and they play rough but I feel like she's getting away with a lot with nipping our older medium/ dogs too. They are annoyed but I think they will teach her without hurting her with time. I feel bad though. They are definitely uncomfortable but also trying to learn how to play with her. She absolutely loves the kids so it's just a play thing but man those teeth are rough.
A real public service. Thank you!
I don't even have a dog and I'm watching so many of this channels videos lol. Im hoping to get a puppy soon and just want to have as much knowledge going into as I can. Thank you for all of the great instructions!
I have a 12 week old dutch shepherd as my demo dog for my training company, she already knows sit, down, stay barks on command, she outs toys and is potty trained. Start training as early as you can.
they should already be deep into obedience and marker training by the time they hit 4 months.
also they absolutely process information, even as early as 10 weeks what are we talking about here? you can potty train them but they dont process information well enough to learn how to sit, down, stay? that seems like a pretty illogical thought process.
I just want to say thank you fore this video
"time to be an adult 10 year old kid" we should apply this to american children
Thanks for sharing your knowledge for free for us.
I was a bit insecure because I am in puppy school in Germany and my trainer went nuts on me because my four month old Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix could not deliver 10 commands we learned in only two sessions, (they did a surprise test on session three). My dog was able to deliver 7/10 and I was relaxed and proud of her. But my trainer scolded me for this "poor performance".
I now realized that I definitely won't do the following stages with this school 😅 obviously they have way too high expectations on youngsters and we have 12 weeks old puppies in the same class as well.
Hearing those development stages explained clearly, what to do when and not to expect too much in the beginning was really helpful. ❤
Last week the trainer scolding me for being "too resistant", because I wasn't following their perfectionism training and voiced some doubts about "only positive reinforcement" and "upgrading your treats" methods.
I do a lot with my body language and they don't like that. But my dog understands me better than with teaching her 15 different human words with treats. 😅
Holy crap, my 5 month old is acting like a 7
Month old., and it’s so smart and willing to learn. I’m really freaked out now wondering what the heck 7 months will be like 😮
That's super interesting. I'm getting a puppy soon and everyone I talk to seems to think socialisation/puppy school etc must happen immediately from 8 weeks onwards. Your approach makes much more sense, I will definitely follow your advice.
Amazing video. This is sooooo helpful!!! Thank you 😊
This make me feel more confident. I feel I can enjoy my puppy, my puppy can enjoy his puppyhood without me expecting him to be cirque due Solei ready.
I think I've already listened to this video 4 times to make sure I have the correct expectations
…great! well.. when the baby have already 7kg when they have 2 months? 😡 hahah
Thank you so much for this! Best advice! The other puppy 'training' Youtubers make it look like we should have our puppy fully trained with an crazy schedule as soon as we pick up the puppy. I got my bundle of joy at 13 weeks and panicked after watching the wrong trainers on YT. Thank you!
It all makes so much sense when it's explained SO clearly! Your videos are so very informative. Many thanks indeed!!
Your wonderful! I needed this so much! This is so helpful! Jesus bless you.
❤❤❤❤
My GS pup seems so serious sometimes, I was actually worried at first..but especially after play dates w some big, friendly neighbor dogs, I’m not worried anymore..he just has a serious streak..
Joel, I currently have 2 puppies ( 4 1/2 month old Lab and a 5 month old White Swiss Shepherd) they obviously do a lot of wrestling with each other & chewing is always distracted to their chew toys when they are doing something not allowed. My question is: IF I take to a dog park, I do only if there are only 1 or 2 dogs. My 2 are completely out of line, jumping on the adults until they become angry. (I ALWAYS ask before I let them together if they feel that their dog can handle puppies that are learning to proper meet and greet.) My question is, should the Dog Park visits end until they get older?
Lol the last video I watched said the brain is fully developed at 8 weeks 😂 didn't sound right
Very insightful…though I feel my first dog was the worst the first few months….
Ready for number 2 I think.
Very helpful, thank you!
I can’t wait till my puppy grows up. I’m definitely getting my butt kicked more than I expected
My puppy is 12 weeks old and she's getting really crazy with the nipping/biting. I tell her 'No!' which she already understands and that sometimes works but sometimes she's getting frustrated by it and starts making noises jumping and biting harder. especially with my roommate whenever she sees him she runs to him like crazy with willingness to play and it immediately gets to hard bites he cannot play with her and when I try to calm her she just making mad noises and biting harder. Unfortunately I have to resort to timeouts otherwise she will just make my roommate bleed.
She's a very good puppy but she just has this one thing that I can't handle. can I have some advice?
Also, the advice on the internet to move her away and ignore her for a few minutes doesn't work! she just chases him around biting his feet really hard.
Can you please talk with one dog trainer that means you are doing things wrong! I want to hear them talk with you . Thank you for learing us the real deal😊
Any thoughts about using a prong collar with 8 month old golden who gets excited which is followed by pulling and lunging?
I want to thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾
I bought my first dog and he's now 13 weeks (american pocket bully) and I was feeling very overwhelmed with his attitude lately. I understood he was teething and I do everything to love him and never hit him. Only correcting bad behaviors with "no" and directing his energy to where it needs to be.
This video gave me hope….🥲
I love him so much. I just want us to have a good relationship. Please wish us luck
Thank you again 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
When would be an okay time to start the gentle leader?
My poodle is 5 months but is already 45 pounds and strong enough that the regular leash is a pain
Thank you so much. I really needed to hear this.
I’ve had people expecting my puppy at 3 months to be fully trained and making me feel bad.
The same now at 6 months. And yes he s doing my head in. “ would you like a Catahoula??. He’s doing my head in.
Yeah nah, – just joking. I totally get what you say about stages. Brin has suddenly become very very affectionate. One moment he is a little shit head and the next super loving. I’ve been wondering when to get serious about his training.
Up to now my main concentration has been on the “Come” command. Living in the bush with so many distractions and his natural scent and hunting drive, l need to know he will come when called. Wild pigs kill dogs. And dogs kill Kiwi. If he ever killed a Kiwi, by law I would have to have my dog put down. Devastating.
You are saving alot of people alot of time
