Regarding heat, most games actually don't need all the power the Steam Deck provides, Almost as a rule you can set the Steam Deck LCD's TDP to 10W without worrying much about performance loss (you find it in the performance tab in the quick access menu). A lot of game engines just run the CPU as hard as they can even though they don't need the extra processing power. Limiting TDP and FPS saves battery life and reduces heat quite a lot. Not to mention that the Steam Deck hardware give you the most performance per watt at 3-10W.
What I tend to do in games is lowering the settings quite a bit. Typically sticking to "Low" or "Medium" but with "High Texture Quality". Then I go to a demanding spot in the game and lower the TDP until it is right above 30fps or 40fps (whatever my target is) and then lock both TDP and FPS… I can go from utilizing 23W down to 10-12W more than doubling battery life while reducing heat. 🙂
Thanks for doing this! I play cozy games like you do and been wanting to buy one to play Coral Island and Stardew Valley! Now I've decided!
That hairdo makes you look like Blathers in the background!! 😀🦉
I'm considering getting a deck at some point this year… thanks for the review
Just got my steamdeck two weeks ago, it’s awesome now i can tackle my backlog anywhere anytime
To be clear: the thing you're calling a hack is not a hack; Valve intends for people to use the Deck this way and supports it officially. I really like the Steam Deck, and because I have large hands the size is actually great for me. Setting up other storefronts on it is a little more work than it is on Windows, but most of it is still pretty easy and there's plenty of videos on YouTube on how to do it. I've set up the Epic Games Store, GOG and Minecraft on mine. Same with emulators if you want to play games from older systems. If you want to get into PC handheld gaming but don't like the Steam Deck though, maybe look at the Asus ROG Ally? That one's a little smaller, has more conventional controls and runs Windows out of the box.
Thank you for uploading this video! It's also cool to see fellow social workers that game. Im testing for my LCSW very soon
The Stream Deck is an excellent product, and I recently purchased the refurbished LCD model. I am confident that the LCD model will not be phased out anytime soon due to the OLED model. The company is refurbishing LCD models to extend their lifespan, and new users, such as myself, are still purchasing them. It is important to note that the Stream Deck system should not be placed on top of a pillow, as this will block the vents that provide airflow to keep it cool. This is not recommended.
Thanks for making this video! I too am a mac girlie and I love my AC Switch but I hate waiting for releases on Switch. I'm looking more into the OLED Steam Deck, I like that they made a dock for it too cause I mainly like to game docked and lay in bed or my couch. Love seeing another Latina cozy gamer 🤎
did anybody face the black screen of death? I am plan on buying it next month.
Me, only playing Steam Deck at home and plugged in: "Wait, since when battery life is an issue?"
Get yourself a gaming pillow by valari! Their awesome. Makes gaming specially handheld so much more comfortable
I plan on getting one in the future. I was debating on the lcd version or a unpatched switch. I chose the switch for now because I don’t feel like diving into a new consoles “world” at the moment.
Great review, it had many points that other had not brought up
I just jumped both feet in, sold my Xbox series s, Nintendo switch, and some other doodads and bought one, the 64gb lcd one, then I got a 1tb micro sd and eventually I’ll replace the m.2 with a 2tb one eventually.
"it's big" proceeds to put a case on it:)
I have both currently, the OLED version just arrived 2 days ago. I have been playing a few games on it and so far I can confirm that the fan noise part is hugely improved. The screen is gorgeous. I played Horizon Zero Dawn today for around an hour (medium settings, 40 fps capped, no upscaling) and I was honestly surprised how silent the fan was during the whole time and naturally the screen really popped especially while HDR was enabled. Literally all 3 cons you mentioned in your video were addressed. My only complaint is with the front facing buttons (a,b,x,y), they are really loose compared to my LCD model, which might be just me being unfortunate but I saw tons of others reporting this on reddit as well. I hope I can fix this later on.
I would recommend getting the OLED version if you can afford it and of course if you are using the device frequently. Used prices are quite good currently, at least where I live, I'm planning to sell my original Deck.
Having the extended battery life, the OLED screen with improved input latency and the silent fan definitely warranted the upgrade for me.
One of the biggest cons for me with the LCD version was the screen, I didn't like to look at it much but holy cow it is a totally different level of experience now. 😊
It is my first OLED device and I was blown away by it, (technically I have an OLED laptop, but I barely use it), somehow the Deck made me realize how big of a difference this can introduce, it is difficult to stop myself from wanting to upgrade my PC monitor now that I use for work 8-10h a day.. 😅 It is the "old" Samsung Odyssey G9 and it would be tough for me to part ways with it. It is still doing a great service for me for work.
solid video
As a Steam Deck user, I appreciate this video ✨✨
I have a Plug-in on my Steamdeck(OLED) called Prontons DB which gives community badges of how well games can run on steamdeck even if not verified. And when you click on the badge there are community notes of how to customize settings if needed to run a game how you want it. I tested for Lethal Company.
As someone who just bought a case for the SD it adds a ton of weight, was actually surprised how much heavier it made it
You should definitely try the OLED one. It’s lighter, battery lasts longer, & the fan is quieter. & the screen is amazing, not even comparable to the LCD version
Lovely video, thank you!
