When the kitten grows up and settles, will they likely become friends?
My adult cat (female) just won't accept the new male kitten. Barely comes in the house. Comes in, smells around and immediately wants out. I dint know how to make my cat get comfortable and cohabitate
My mom adopted one of my male foster kittens (he’s almost 2 now, but still hella playful), but Mom is also pet-sitting my dad’s older female cat while he’s out of the country, and this is 100% their interactions. Thank you for the advice, Jackson!!!
Thanks Jackson, I will take your advice and try. My kitten keeps trying to play with my senior cat and she is not having it. I know I can count on you to deliver on what to do. I’ll keep you posted
What about when the little one eats everything ! He empties the bowl of the resident cat
Ahh i needed that video to help me relax MORE about my cat introductions 😊
Howling at old cat man impression your fun y
We had that problem now my 1 yr old is playing with a kitten he just wouldnt leave my 9 yr old alone. It worked year
We just got a kitten for our younger cat, but the older cat bullies both of them 😢 we've tried so many things!
Hi,
I have a two year old Siberian (Binx) and a 10 week old kitten (Bobby). Binx was very unhappy initially having Bobby here, he’s only here 3 weeks, now Bobby is absolutely trying to fight him all the time and I’m so afraid Binky will hurt him by accident as he’s so much bigger. It’s as if Binx tries to humour him until Bobby comes at him repeatedly and won’t stop so we separate them. Any advice would be really appreciated!Binx for background was a rescue kitten and we had him since he was about 5/6 months old. He is also neutered. Binky tries to be near him but just relaxing and Bobby gets so excited every time he sees him. There’s been a few wrestling style moves where Bobby has been put down by Binx, like pinning him. Bobby is claws out and Binx isn’t. I know it’s early days yet but I’m terrified of Bob getting hurt.
We have a now 11 year old and a now 7 month old kitten. Our older cat was 10 when we got our kitten who was at the time 4 months old. Our kitten doesn’t get tired and occasionally jumps on our older cat. It’s getting harder and harder to distract the kitten and he often gets tired of his toys. We purchased the bully spray which has helped some but now it’s almost like it makes the kitten want to lunge again. I don’t think another kitten is the answer. It has been stressful enough with our new addition. I feel frustrated
Hi Jackson family. I have gained so much cat knowledge from this channel, I’m so grateful. My situation is a bit different :
I have two grey cats brother and sister 1.5 years old, super close! They are so playful and affectionate. This month I introduced an adopted 10 week old kitty with that high energy (orange tabby) . The integration went smoothly and my cats accepted the new kitty. After the transition process they all eat together, sometimes sleep together, they run around and play together and my grey cats bathe him! I thought the bonding was going so well except for interactive playing with me….I have been trying my best to equal time with play but it’s been hard because whenever the new kitty comes into the space to interact with the toy my older cats just quit and walk away. Even when I try and bring them to another room to have one on one , they HATE when a door is closed and are obsessed with that instead of the toy lol I feel bad because they like to play it’s just not sharing with the new kitty. The way they walk away seems so sad. I think I may be overthinking it and maybe they just need to get used to the kitty being around and then they’ll engage with play again? Any advice for this situation where my cats accept the kitty but just don’t like playing around him. I feel bad they’re missing out. Thanks so much !!
I have two senior cats (13) and I'm currently cat-sitting for a friends' cat, which is about 1 year old. The young boy was found in a field as a very young kitten and then grew up around a dog, so his body language is a bit different from what my cats are used to.
The first "date" our cats had was to see if they would basically get along and not unalive each other on sight, since I know my cats do get along with dog visitors at least. I wouldn't say it was the best experience that could've been, but nobody wanted to harm each other. Basically it was like in the video: young cat wanted to play, old cat didn't understand wtf this other cat is doing here and why he's "talking" so weirdly. That was the first time I heard my male cat growl and hiss, btw. The young cat was mostly interested in playing and exploring and it took a while for him to understand that growling means "back off".
Still, we decided to give it a try with the option to relocate the younger cat to another catsitter (or just keep the visitor locked in a room by himself) if needed.
It's day 4 out of 8 now and they co-exist way better than on day 1. The young boy learned my seniors body language quite well now. They eat next to each other (mostly my male cat and the young one. my female cat is a grumpy old granny that prefers to stay at a safe distance from him) and sometimes even attempt to play together. However, it is more than obvious that the energy levels don't match at all.
All in all it was/is a learning experience. I learned that my cats aren't territorial and they could get along with additions to the family (though I would introduce them the correct way then, with separate rooms, etc.), but mostly that I would definitely get two kittens so they can exhaust each other. 😅
With this, I just wanted to share my experience but also say thank you, Jackson! For everything! 🖤
Same situation here except my new one (Mac) is only 2 months.. he cant stop rubbing and purring all around my old one (Donny) and I can see Donny getting annoyed.
There is currently a very similar dynamic developing between my two cats. They are 8 and 10 years old and have been living together for 7 years. However the 10 year old has shifted to old man energy, while the 8 year old is still as playful as a kitten. And the tension between the two is rising. Her favorite game is playing chase, which I as a human can't simulate all that well, so I have been contemplating to introduce another cat that can match her energy.
I have the opposite issue. My new cat, 1, is bothering my old cat, 15.
Same situation here, but it’s a recently spayed female, and a male kitten, but we have another problem, dogs, my female is used to them and they play a lot, but this little one is scared of them and gets aggressive which triggers our older dog and then it’s chaos
You’re the best Jackson! your videos have guided me and kept me positive my entire cat journey(:
I find myself in this EXACT situation , the only difference being its an older female cat and a young kitten! Deeply helpful advice
Can I trade my kitten in for an older cat that matches the energy of my older cat?
My 9 month old GIGANTIC 11 lb kitten sees my 5 yr old female, 6lb Sphynx as a toy. How do I get him to stop playing so rough with her? She has no fur for bite/scratch protection and he easily overpowers her and she cries. It's not aggressive on his part, he just plays way too rough. Help! She cries when he pounces on her and bites her.
Jackson, thanks for confirming that I had left too much on Baby's shoulders. I got Calí (kitten) for Baby's (3 years old) companion. Baby took good care of raising C – taught her all the good cat things. But Bae has had enough of Calí's high energy. I need to play more with Calí. I also adopted 2 of Calí's siblings (oops 2 litter…neighbor finally got dadcat neutered, momcat scheduled for spay). They are 8 weeks old. Plan is to have Calí spend energy with younger sibs (C is now 6+ months old) and take some pressure off my Baby. Baby gets lavished with affection multiple times daily.
Literally my cats lol
I wish our interaction with our cats were as civil as this! We have an older female cat (14yrs old) and we recently took in two sister kittens at 2mos old (now 8mos old) and my older cat hates them with a passion!! This is crazy to see because our older cat is the sweetest cat but when she sees the kitten sisters there’s an evil that rages inside of her that we’ve never seen before. My older cat was a rescue that we took in when she was 5yrs old. So she’s been with our family by herself for 9 years. We thought because she was so sweet she would enjoy the company (naive of us…I know) but now they’re all stuck in the house together and it’s like watching an evil grandma scold her grandchildren every second they’re near each other. The kittens are naturally inquisitive of her but she won’t let them anywhere more than 5ft of distance without her hissing and going in for an attack. They’ve been together for 6 months now and I just think it’ll be like this until my senior cat crosses through the pearly gates. I sure hope I’m wrong because we’d love them all to get along.
I can relate so much with this video. I just rescued a 5 month old kitten but my 12 yr old cat is not too happy atm. This will need a lot of work!
Help! We have a 7 and 4 month old. Exact issue Jackson addressed, but my 7 month old wants to play too, just not as hard as 4. When I play with 4, 7 watches sadly from the sidelines cuz she wants to play too but 4's play style is too overbearing for her. I can't play separately with her either because 4 will come running. I feel so bad. (When 4 is calm, they get along great.) Anyone got advice?
My parents used to have this one sweet senior red tabby cat and with my sister had a cute tiny red tabby kitten. The older cat allowed the kitten slept next to him. I even did knew my parents cat since I was almost 9 years old. He was my 1st cat so that I grew up with this cat. He was a stray cat that was adopted by us. He suckered my mother into adopting him into our home. We even tried to have a young kitten in the early 1980’s. He did sniffed nose to nose to the kitten. He was a young adult cat. We adopted 2 stray cats after him. He became friends with them, too. He was sweet and friendly cat when he was a young cat towards his senior years of living with my parents. He did jumped on my grandmother’s thigh a couple times. She didn’t do anything towards him. She disliked him because his face looked liked a fox. This cat was a buddy towards me in his old age. I do missed him in his head bumps towards my nose or chin. Even giving him kisses on his old head. His name was Morris. The kitten’s name was Salem.
This one is SO HELPFUL!
Watching all your videos and I’m
Slowly seeing changes 👏❤️
I had a bit of the same situation, only my first cat is adult and still young and wants to play. Just had to get used to the kitten. They now start to play together and love to wake me up in the morning. The more the kitten grows and calms down, how better this is going.
I sure wish I was informed before I invested my heart and time in a new kitten 😞 but I will get over losing Milo
There’s not one cat that can’t get in with a kitten my older cat is 4 years old my kitten is 3 months old
My cat stares at the kitten
Let the bigger cat smell the scent of the kitten and get the kitten in a play pen to let the other cat stare at it get used to it
Like my cat and kitten there learning to get on lol 😅
I got two kittens but my older one still is not happy! What now?
Guys we’re getting a new kitten today, and our 3 year old is a little jerkbooty sometimes so wish us luck 😂
This is exactly what I'm experiencing with my 3-year-old Siamese cat and my new adopted kitten.
Very nice❤❤
I’m going though the same thing my adult cat wants nothing to do with my kitten .
Coming to this later. So glad I saw this because this is the exact same situation with my two cats! My older girl tolerates the younger one, but you can tell he’s too much energy for her most of the time. I love when I see them grooming though!
Thanks for all the positive messages to help us help our cats!
I had heard of walking in the snow uphill both ways to school and back home, but never on your hands. Laughed out loud. Thanks old timer ! LOL
Thanks you so much. We have a 2 1/2 year old we adopted when she was approximately 10 weeks old. Our other cat is a tuxedo we adopted from a shelter when she was 1 1/2 (now four). The younger one attacks the older one and the older one sounds like she is being killed. However watching this and another video of yours helped us see that there is no blood, pee or running away after the tussle helped use see it is not as bad as we thought. Thanks again.
My 8 yr old male LOVES the 4 month old female kitten. When she’s crazy, he just walks away. I read that if one gets a kitten to live with an older cat it should be the opposite sex.
My female cat is about a year old and then I recently purchased at 12 week old male kitten. My kitten is of course playful. However, she has been pouncing on him and she starts to hurt him and the kitten of course is hissing then I have to break that up. Not sure if I need to separate them. It’s been less than a week things were good at first but now the older one seems to be getting irritated. Any advice would really help me 😊
