Nope look carefully, the druid has a tail and horns… 3rd edition Tiefling's had normal skin tones…
Look at the bard when he is wearing armor… Right below his left shoulder is a Harper pin… I think there is a LOT more to him than he lets on…
it uses elements of Out of the Abyss, and Rime of the Frostmaiden books. the red at the end is Themberchaud from Out of the Abyss. And shes a Tiefling Druid
The simple fact that they purposely dive right into a gelatinous cube to get away from a displacer beast sold me & the mimic! Of course
I get the impression that the Druid at least is new to the party, as she asks what the Bard's job is.
I feel like it's gonna be good. At least better than those other attempts. I just hope it gets even more people into dnd. The more views and ideas the better
It wasn't until I watched Critical Roll that I started to actually try less hard to sound like my character is of the times. I let a few modernist phrases pass my character's lips and overall it really just helped the sessions get more fun. I like the tone this movie seems to take, with GoT, Lord of the Rings, and The Wheel of whatever it's called being kinda serious… this is a nice change of pace.
Hopefully, it doesn't overdo it… I'd love to see another movie like this one if it's successful. Other shows of this type seem overly serious and sometimes the magic just takes a back seat to drama (Which I like!), but there are times I just want to see an absurd magical battle happen just because it's a Tuesday.
If you haven't seen it, you should watch Chris Perkin's take on the movie. It's here on YT.
The druid is definitely a tiefling; you can see her tail when she does that Dimension Door kind of thing. We've gotten confirmation of the classes: a bard, a paladin, a Tempest barbarian, a sorcerer, and a druid. Because the druid is wild shaping into an owlbear, and the movie is officially licensed and worked closely with Wizards, there's a lot of speculation that she's an upcoming, as-yet-unannounced, new subclass, like a Circle of Monstrosity or something. Which I think would be absolutely amazing, depending on the rest of the class feats.
It was also confirmed at SDCC that some members of Critical Role have cameos in the movie; so you know that I'm going to spend half my attention while watching it just looking for Matt Mercer's glorious head of hair 😂
Given that Guardians of the Galaxy is the best D&D movie made to date that but fantasy seems a good fit.
Having dm-ed in 2nd, 3rd and Pathfinder editions, I like that they seem to have intergrated elements of different editions to the looks of the creatures. I immediately recognized the 3rd ed black dragon when it appeared. Even the druid has a look that ressembles 3rd Ed elements of tieflings. She has a tail that we see briefly in the trailer. The red dragon is a little more chunkier that in the editions I play. Maybe its esthetics are more inspired by 4th or 5th ed? Or who knows? Maybe he's just fat 😂
The goofiness felt like player banter to me, which I think would be an excellent choice, as that would evoke the feeling of a tabletop session. I actually would prefer that to a completely serious "in lore" situation because I don't think most gaming groups stay serious during their sessions.
A bit of Marvel Cinematic Universe in there, a bit of Ocean's Eleven too, but I hope there's a serious edge to it too as there was with Guardians of the Galaxy. Strong cast, good effects, hope the script is decent enough too but I'm pleased by the trailer at least. Funny that the "Thieves" movie doesn't actually have a rogue in it. Bard, Barbarian, Sorceror/Wizard, Paladin (maybe some Warlock) and Druid – solid enough party I suppose, But fantasy is quite popular at the moment, "teams" are popular too, so there should be space for a decent D&D movie/series/Cinematic Universe with the variety of options available.
Guess we'll find out if it's actually good next March.
Dungeons&Dragons official channel put a video about this. Seems WotC was directly involved in this which sort of is… good news… i guess?
My inner paladin wants to slap the bard, go drinking with th barb and protect the Druid.
Waiting to see more of the writing and plot to see if the woke drivel has wormed its way into another potentially good movie.
pretty sure the chunky dragon is Themberchaud
Shes a tiefling. The door camera angle shot (dont know how else to describe it) you can see her tail
I like it. As an OLD Dungeons and Dragons
Player from 1982. I'm 57 years old.
And played D&D in High School.
My old days As a Dungeon Master were
Pretty Goofy Too.
It fits perfectly. To me anyway.
I also heard somewhere that chonky dragon at the end is the one Red Dragon who hangs out in the underdark.
I honestly don’t mind that it’s goofy, better to do it’s own thing than go full serious…mostly serious like Lord of the Rings.
Seeing as you two are both DMs, I have to ask…does it make sense for an Adventuring Party to consist of mostly Rogues/Thieves, even if they have different abilities/side-classes
I wonder if the paladin is gonna be an oathbreaker. The "glad he's on our side" feels like a clue that it just might not be the case…
This was supposed to come out 2 years ago, right around the time that "Rime of the Frostmaiden" was released. Revel's End, the prison in that module, was created specifically for this movie and inserted into it when the director and writers said they needed a prison.
And honestly, we can't really judge the tone of a movie based on a handful of lines.
Horse to owlbear to tiefling. As for spells, you have at least a Fire Bolt being absorbed by a Shield.
Go back and watch as she does Dimension Door (with the "trippy camera work") and you can see the redhead's tail. She is definitely a Tiefling.

The dialog reminded me of sitting around the table and playing the game.
Where is Fox Ghost?
Love it.
Lots of Forgotten Realms references Chris Pine’s Bard even wears a Harper Pin in some of the scenes. I also like the Tiefling Druid character with horns and a tail.
Goofy serious but also comedy archetype…is pretty much 90% of all D&D games. I'm open with the design, the dragon having the proper breath weapons, etc… I'm about it. This is either going to be good, or schlock, and by schlock I mean cult quality.
As a player who prefers a good balance of goofiness at the table, I’m excited about this trailer. From what I can tell from interviews, this is an original story that will take place in a few known D&D locations (Waterdeep, Neverwinter & Revel’s End…which WOTC created for this movie). They are going to take some liberties (wild shape into Owl Bear), but hopefully stay as true as possible to the source.
I have a good feeling about this one. I really do. I mean they sat down with WOC themselves and stayed true to the lore. I mean I was sold when i saw the Black Dragon spewing acid across the battlefield.
