My cat has his relaxed purr and his more insistent "I want snacks" purr .The second one is faster and louder ,usually accompanied by head butting .His "Going to sleep with my human " purr sounds like a small tractor .I agree with other comments that purring is very relaxing .

I love when my cat would purr and come close to my ear. And of course when he rubs under my chin purring or rubs his cool, wet nose while purring is a sign of his pleasure and friendliness.
My cat does not know how to purr, or it's very low volume. I don't quite know how to describe it. It's different from every other cat I have known. It's like it's emanating from her nose, rather than deeper inside. BTW on some other sites, they say vibration from purring may have a healing effect which is apparently why they purr when injured or sick as well.

My cat Dogg is a purring machine…. Its LOUD and a lil obnoxious but I love it! He sounds like a big Dinosaur! And its very long lasting LOL… I love my old man!
Our current cat was a feral kitten, that they took in when she was about 6 weeks old along with her sister. They adopt them out. They were born in a barn mon a pig farm. So our little one does not purr so loud. I cannot hear her but my husband can. All my other kitties were loud with their purr, so I think it had to deal with concealment for these barn cats.

I have heard the vibrations from purring help cats with healing when they are sick. I’m not sure if that is true or not but I can say a few weeks ago I had really bad sinus pressure that went all the way to my ears and made my ears ache. I picked up my furbaby and was snuggling with my ear against his side, and after about 10 minutes, my ear did not ache near as bad. It’s like the vibrations loosened up the pressure in my ear. We were both much happier because my ear wasn’t hurting as bad and he got snuggles.

I addopted a couple of barn cats a few months ago. One I haven't heard purr at all, & the other is almost inaudible & only does it when she's falling asleep. I read that feral cats teach their kittens to not purr.
The only time one of my cats wasn’t completely relaxed while purring was when the younger one (he’s about 18 months old) was younger and he purred if he was happy where he was, but sometimes he was still energetic enough to scratch and bite. This was before he learned to scratch and bite softly.

I have two cats and both of them purr. One, although one has a very wet nose, sometimes always sneezing or spraying her nasal contents when being petted. Ziva will sometimes pur loud enough to here from at least 8 feet away and when I brought her home from the shelter I got her from she pured loud enough for the driver of the van we were in to wonder if it was her or if something with the van was making a weird noise and other times she will pur soft enough to wonder if she is puring or what so I guess it depends on the mood she is in

My Rudy has a "grunt-purr." He has no problems breathing, and he has no problems purring. When when he starts to purr, whether breathing in or out, it always sounds as if he has to push it out a little bit in a sort of grunt. It's absolutely adorable.
My cat purrs mostly to my daughter. She goes out to work while I`m retired, mostly at home all the time except when my daughter drives me somewhere. I have no car. I stay at home playing catch or fetch games with my cat whenever he demands it, usually until he`s exhausted. I feed the cat whenever he`s hungry and clean the litter box after he uses it most every time he goes. My daughter does neither. Still when my daughter leaves for work, he`s all over her, trying to prevent her bodily from going by blocking her path, rubbing her legs, and purring. When she returns from work , he`s all over her welcoming her home, purring and stroking her legs with his entire body. When daughter comes home she spends most of her time on her laptop. So to get her attention, he climbs up her torso and lies down on her shoulder and purrs to her. Why does my cat only purr to me when I wake him up by stroking his soft fur gently, and not always, because he will usually open his eyes to see who`s there? When I give up on him, he will claw me in the leg to signal to me that it`s play time again and why am I not entertaining him? Any answers, please?
I once had a mother cat giving birth and her son from her first litter was sitting behind her supporting her in all ways, and he was running his purring engine…. that has stuck with me for many years. They are both now chasing mice in heaven. 🐈🐱

My Kitty purrs when she curls up on my lap. She also snores in her sleep.
Maxine will snuggle under the blankets and purr. The vibration is so relaxing to me and she seems to know when I need to feel it more than hear it. I've read somewhere that the purr is at a level that can heal us humans. I tend to believe it. Maxine knows how to heal this body of mine. The purr is only one reason I love cats in my life. 🙂
