Long story but I basically owe my life and career to Wing Commander.
Meeting the recomended system requirerments for this game in 1990 would cost over $2000, (386sx, 2mb vga and adlib) like $5000 adjusted for inflation today and that wasnt even a top end pc and wouldnt run doom in 1993. Now people complain when their 7 year old mid range pcs struggle to run a game at 60 fps.
I used to have to beg my sister to reinstall wing commander for me very time I wanted to play….. those cut scenes really take you back lol.
It's unfortunate they didn't have the foresight to realize PCs would continue to get faster and cause the game to run too fast. Surely this was not a wild realization by 1990.
I got this game at a yardsale for 25 cents, complete with all the feelies in box. Played the heck outta it on my 386sx. Having played it in native hardware and remembering the speed/fps, you'd definitely want to play it at a bit faster than 30,000 CPU cycles to get the proper speed.
I still can't believe Lightspeed runs on my Tandy 1000 TL/2
There is a after and before after WC was released.
Back when games had logical lore and canon
When i was a kid growing up in the 00s i played a lot of privateer.
I refuse to play a space fighter game that does not have that spacial awareness hud
eines der besten Spiele seiner Zeit ! Gutes Video, habe ein Abo dagelassen.
I absolutely LOVED this game, but it always really bugged me that space was blue.😆
Such fond memories of this game, an all-time great, ahead of it's time. You can't understand the thrill of those cinematic scenes, especially before flying and seeing your busted up ship when you land.
1st game I ever bought for my 1st PC. Loved it and still have a soft spot for the games
If I am not mistaken, didn't this game inspire the 1999 movie of the same name?
We need Strike Commander 2!
If Chris Roberts had thought of having people mail him money to make wing commander, hed still be working on it and charging people to this day.
I had the super wing commander on the 3do and I really liked it. But as you stated, it did get frustrating. I would get to a certain point and get very angry doing the same mission 50 times, so I would have to leave it and come back later. I did end up finishing it eventually, and I did end up enjoying it.
I absolutly loved the wing commander games growing up. When my father got a soundblaster from the adlib and bought wing commander 2, the speech blew my mind!. I had them all at one point and then moved up to the privateer games which were absolutly amazing as well. Those were the days indeed.
The rest of the Wing Commander series is also REALLY worth a look. The shocking intro and intricate story of WingCom2, the excellent cast, story, and George Oldziey soundtrack of 3, the open gameplay and mainframe Space Trader roots of Privateer…..
All good stuff. WingCom3 is still my all-time favorite computer game.
Claw Marks 4 the WIN! I LOVED the backstory of Custer's Carnival, the Shelton Slide, and the air of verisimilitude that it lent to the game. And the Kilrathi ship blueprints!!!
I SEE that copy of SU-25 Stormovik on your shelf. A CRIMINALLY underrated flight sim with a truly compelling endgame scenario that I was proud to complete on first attempt.
WC: Privateer any day
This game ran better on my SNES than it did on my PC, which at the time, had specs that were more than double the requirements. Odd.
How did the Wing Commander movie manage to be so awful?😅 It even had that disturbing crap where they "forget" dead pilots.
