I have a Malkita which is a Belgian Malinois /American Akita mix. He's almost 3 and pushing 100 lbs. He's super friendly to people, but other dogs/animals beware. I can vouch for the territorial part big time.
Akitas are dog aggressive but my Akita loves people.

I love this breed. As our last two dogs were Akita's (Japan), but they were big. The first Akita was a male, not good with other dogs, and yes, on a camping trip Odin did kill a brown bear, as I was alone in a tent with 3 small children, Odin was in a dining room tent, chained to a picnic table. Well, a bear came around, probably looking for food, but I am a camper and know better. Sadly one of the kids was still in diapers, and no doubt the bear was sniffing the tent. Got too close for Odin's liking. They are called silent killers, as they do not bark in attack mode, I hear the chain break and then a loud thump. Within seconds, the bear was gone. So, I had to go and get the park rangers and left Odin in the tent with the kids. Yep, the ranger was in disbelief. These are very protective dogs, and I would never suggest this breed as your first breed. Training is a must, or else you are going to have a very big, unruly and dangerous dog. Mocha (just lost her) was our second Akita. Females are much smaller, she weigh in at about 115 to 120 lbs. She was far more social with other dogs, but sadly, not raccoons or coyotes. She was truly the most gentle being I ever had, she would meditate with me, and as she matured, she would be the first to get ready for meditation, she seem to love that energy. Yes, they shed, but they are generally low maintenance. Akitas are very smart, can be stubborn, and too independent. We have had shepperds most of my life; this breed is extraordinary.
Beautiful dog but you have to respect the power and breeding and be super prepared for owning one. Almost any dog has the potential to be dangerous when anxious, mistreated or provoked. This is just magnified the bigger and more powerful they are. I took on an older German shepherd who had spent 8 years as a yard dog for a plant hire company and he was a beautiful companion for the last couple of years of his life but was always a potential threat to other dogs and was never trusted, unsupervised, around children. Just not worth the risk.

When protective breeds are without their pack, they can surprise with docile/tolerant behavior. But if mom or dad is in the room, the groom will not be as smooth.

My family and I had an Akita who was wonderful. My wife’s friend brought her toddler son for a visit. Our dog was sound asleep when the toddler fell on him. He looked up, saw no danger and went back to sleep. I never saw an angry dog in him nor did any of our friends or family fear him.
I met an Akita breeder many years ago. She told me that Akita is a curious breed. They don't usually bark, but howl. They are silent, but when on guard, a trespasser will not hear any sounds before attacking. It's a ninja dog.
