*day two.
Super Sonic was only a thing starting with Sonic 2.
Could you make one on crash bandicoot?
(in a deep, demonic voice)
YOUR SERVICES ARE NEEDED ONCE MORE
EDIT: What you say in 14:56 bothers me a LOT, for two reasons:
1 – Yeah, the fight COULD look better with a bigger budget, but the industry is so full of bad and forgettable big-budget games that Sonic in comparison being mid-budget actually feels like a breath of fresh air.
2 – You forgot something extremely important about Insomniac and their latest Ratchet & Clank Game: It looked beautiful and the animation work was superb, BUT, it was all in service of an aggressively mediocre story. I MUCH prefer the way Sonic is right now, with Ian Flynn actually giving a damn about storytelling in the new games, than taking the easy way out like Insomniac did, and try too hard to be like a wholesome Pixar movie, it doesn't fit R&C and it never will. The story in Frontiers gives R&C Rift Apart a beating, they're not even CLOSE in terms of writing.
I really hope you'll be covering Shadow Generations.
Alright time for another Sonic (Shadow) game
shadow generations pleaaaaase :3
Now we need SxS Generations!
dude now I NEED to know your opinion on Shadow Generations
WWELP Now that Sonic x Shadow Generations has been released….
ahem.
Fun Fakt our german sonic voice actor is Mark Stachel and Stachel means Spike in englisch
so, when are we going to talk about the animation of every handheld Sonic game?
Damn so I take it you’ll be covering sonic x shadow generations animation lmao
I love the no boost aura, so when instead of getting max speed i got 98 speed and max rings, and its SO good to control when the options are correct.
We thank you for your service
Breaking news (for you):
Another Sonic game called "Sonic x Shadow Generations" that will release on upcoming October… you'll have to critic another one and it will be worth it!
17:22 Sonic Team has heard you, and they gave him both John Wick and devil powers lmfao.
"You're not gonna be waiting for 40 minutes for the credits to roll"
Sonic Colors Ultimate would like a word
Sorry but hating on The Black Knight is so 2010s. Most people have warmed up to it by now. Critics whined about the controls either being convoluted or imprecise. There's nothing convoluted about it. It's intuitive. And it was developed before the Motion Plus even came out, so expecting more than just swinging in general directions is silly. It's less about what move you make and more about the timing and spectacle just like previous Sonic attacks. Since we're discussing animation, its animation has many of the strengths you discussed here too.
Can’t wait for him to talk about sonic X shadow generations
Waiting for Superstars and Shadow Generation 😼
Looks like they took your advice, Dan. Shadow Generations is delivering a level pack with old story beats as an addon to an existing game, and their scaled down efforts in-engine are looking absolutely fantastic in contrast to many of their previous efforts. Of course, new game means… I'll just say, good luck having to talk about Sonic animation again soon.
At least you have a constant source of revenue.
Sonic fans will eat anything up if it's positive or negative or whatever…
17:54 Respectfully that’s such a sonic fan thing to say.
I love the combat in this game it's like baby's first Devil May Cry
A very consistent issue isnt even that sonic team is too ambitious for their own good, oftentimes it seems more like the things that cause a lot of issues is sega forcing unneccesary workload on them without really giving them the compensation in time needed to make it work. While black knight has issues, its also a huge step up from secret rings because the B crew that worked with it was allowed to use the same engine, allowing them to actually tweak and be ambitious with their product to refine it. Forces has issues with the writing and level design, but the team also had to switch to an ENTIRELY different engine mid development.
As a tangent: I dislike the idea that sonic discourse is the way it is because sonic fans are unpleasable. Its more like it seems like sega abuses their mascot in subtle ways that make it look like sonic team is the one thats actually responsible, these issues are often consistent and very predictable once you start to see the patterns and it got to the point where the team simply couldnt catch up even when they were doing exactly what sega told them to do. And the lead up to frontiers was basically that discourse: "You cant even do your meta self aware comedy sonic without your games being bugfests and you want to stack MORE on your plate, do you want another 06?" Yeah everyone was clearly hopeful, but dissapointment has happened so often that i dont think a single person genuinely expected a half decent game again… at least not one that wouldnt require a herculean modding effort like project 06.
The fact that frontiers isnt being regarded as sonic's third impact right now is because the lead developer put their foot down at the risk of getting fired entirely just for another year of dev time. Honestly i can see why they did that because if sonic did a "return to form" and ended up as a complete mess it would have signaled to pretty much everyone that this franchise(at least in 3D) was dead and not even the decision to de-meta sonic would have made it better. Which is a shame because indie creators with just as much passion as sonic team made experiences that were actual precision platformers with similar boost and momentum mechanics as both 2d and 3d sonic, even going so far as to hold back on automation a bit more, and basically showed the world that its possible to make a good 3D sonic game as long as there was enough time given to the developers. Sure these indie devs are absolutely insane(the spark 3 creator makes entire game engines as a hobby) but my point still stands.
This is an interesting video. Because while I do agree that the cutscene animation is stiff, I also think that overall the animation in this is a downgrade from previous Sonic games especially when you look at Sonic's base model in this one.
Like he lacks some idle animations from Gens & Unleashed, no homing attack animations, no poses for the rank result screen, no poses/stretches for starting a level like in Colors or Unleashed, no real trick system in Cyberspace to see his different poses.
Like its funny because even SA2 Sonic's model had most of these despite his weird animations for running. Like Sonic doesn't feel as alive or energetic when playing through the hubs or cyberspace. Granted the Super Sonic boss fights are the exception & the highlight of this game.
Nice vid
I genuinely still can't believe this game exists.
I understand the ending point. At the end of the day yes, Sega is never gonna put a quarter of their budget into a sonic game. People often forget Sega is alot more than just sonic (Look at something like Yakuza or Like a Dragon as its being called now) but I also feel thats its biggest issue. Sonic is still its largest overall IP. Its the IP that got them to where they are now and while I wish they would finally give a Sonic game the budget and resources to make a truly special game, it might never happen. However I have to disagree on Sonic never having a financial failure. The there are a couple developer interviews after Frontiers came out that when you read between the lines, sound like Forces was such a massive failure critically and commercially that Sonic Team actually was on a tightrope here. And frankly, they've been walking that tightrope ever since 06.
I do however think Sega is finally going in the right direction. Albeit slowly. Giving Ian Flynn the reigns story wise and finally trying to develop the world and story behind the scenes are fantastic. Its alot better than the Meta Era's cringe and eventual stagnation with Forces. Whether or not Frontiers is the lead up to something greater wont be known for a while but I do hope it is.
Ive watched your sonic animatioon video many times and i love it
I live for your sonic videos every time i see them it makes me exited
Ngl with the new shadow generations. Coming out is love to see Dan
Cover the animation improvement it’s honestly amazing that the sonic franchise finnaly has a really well animated game
"OH YEAH YOU WORK FOR ME NOW!" Sonic To : New Frame Plus
Este video trata con más respeto a la franquicia que la mayoría de videos de fans hablando sobre los juegos
"Don't cry for me – I'm already dead."
Once you talk about sonic. There is no taking it back.
How does it feel to have your biggest video on the internet be about a blue hedgehog that's gotta go fast
There were perhaps dozens, if not hundreds of people who could have warned you about the Sonic Quicksand. None of them told you about it, on purpose, because the only way we're ever going to get an unambiguously, inarguably fantastic 10/10 Sonic game ever again is if someone, somewhere, figures out how.
I’m wondering what he’ll think of Sonic x Shadow Generations, as it’s a scaled down, more refined experience like he suggested, and there seems to be a bigger focus on animation flair with the Chaos Control QTE’s and non-euclidean cityscape.
To say that Frontiers is not in a "complete, polished state" is an understatement to the most extreme extent.
Frontiers is one of the most consistently low quality products I've ever seen.
They somehow managed to get terrible character control, consistently bad animation and transitions, minimal and lackluster level design, a highly frustrating camera system and a shockingly boring landscape, not to mention hideous open world technical issues (pop-in) in to a single game all at once!
I actually appreciate the perspective of someone who doesn't consider themselves a Sonic fan in the first place; it not only adds objectivity by virtue of not having any bias sugarcoat legitimate criticisms, but it makes said criticisms feel properly elaborated on and gives proper room for discussion beyond just "they're lazy" or "it's rushed". This and the previous video have been insanely insightful for this very reason imo, but this one especially warranted a like from me due to no jabs at… well, I'll just come out and say it: Amy's personality. '^^
The conclusion here is sound; the franchise's experimentation is a big part of its charm.
However I would like to argue a detail: while I don't disagree that Sonic games have been mid-level productions for pretty much the entirety of their 3D lives (in fact ever since their actual first largest scale production was cancelled, making SEGA struggle a LOT with the Dreamcast afterwards), that's most definitely the one main big reason they likely could never reach Insomniac level of actually putting forward their games' actual scope. Sonic is a franchise that thrives on "go big or go home" stakes, but actually pulling those off with just "average" level production so the games can be churn out at a relatively quick pace is contradicting that. A lot.
The answer to that should be glaringly obvious, with spinoffs developped by different teams but still going for "grand" entries (as a Sonic fan myself I thoroughly enjoyed the massive sprawling crossovers it did with other SEGA IPs just because it felt huge even if the games themselves were likely cheaper to make), but for that to work they also need to put the proper big-scale budget behind the maingames themselves; and good news, SEGA is apparently doing just that now!
16:50 I get your point, but I don't think this is Sonic Team's doing. I don't know exactly what goes on behind the scenes, but chances are it's big executives trying to copy whatever is successful at the time, the developers have to find a way to justify it to fit sonic's aesthetic and themes (to various degrees of success). It's imposed limitations that after a while you get used to and try to make the best you can with what you're given.
But for me, it makes the games feel insecure: huge, empty, realistic natural landscapes are not Sonic. BOTW's melancholic hope does not fit a cartoon inspired character who's all about speed.
Without the jukebox I probably wouldn't have finished Sonic Frontiers. I cannot stress enough how weird Sonic feels in a realistic environment, especially for that same place to have absolutely random obstacle courses. You wouldn't make a photorealistic Mario game. Sonic is meant to be about freedom, speed, confidence, impulsivity: this clashes with the franchise's lack of confidence.
can you cover superstars and dream team?
Sonic Riders cutscenes seems to have the best animation in the mainline games canon.
4:30 thats called a drop dash dude
can't wait for the now legally required sonic x shadow generations video when the game comes out, welcome to your new life
BRING BACK THE BOARS!! This has been a delight to watch <3
welcome to hell 💀
Are you okay sir??? Do you need help? Do you need a hug?
Welcome.
I may have just discovered you but I'm so glad my utter obsession with blue hedgehog games has led me to your vids :p (also I'm glad that your new fandom has led you to frontiers, jk jk… unless 😂)
