Our 17 year old Smokey she never stop purring. On her last day she suffered renal failure. After doing sub-q fluid treatment to her, she will go back purring and bump head. Even when her cancer had spread, she would purr, whenever we kissed her head. And when we brought her to the clinic, because it was time💔💔💔 when the vet laid her on the table, I touched her head, kissed her, pet her and told her how much we love her and thanked her for loving us all that time she was purring and swishing her tail. I couldn’t help it. I cried so hard.
My senior kitty stopped purring suddenly. She stopped when she was about 16. She was beginning to fade even then so I had to put her down at 17 1/2 because the vet said she had lymphoma and had lost a lot of weight (that I didn't noticed, unfortunately). She stopped cleaning herself in the last year, too. Then I discovered she liked scrambled eggs (and never was interested in them before). She'd meow and pace frantically until I gave her a little plate with eggs on it. She'd wolf it down in 10 seconds. It was hard to say goodbye to her. I still miss her terribly even though this was 6 years ago. She still visits me now and then. I'll catch a glimpse of her or feel her walking on the bed. When I turned around she wasn't there of course. I feel very honored that she loves me enough to come by now and then.

I have 5 indoor cat and one 5 year old cat doesn't purr.
Sometimes Keiko wants me to go away, and he won't purr and then looks at me like, "not now." He bugs me whenever, at any time, if he wants something. The little turd will randomly sit next to me and purr for long periods of time. If I don't give him water out of the sink, he will slight me later. If I give him a bath, which he tolerates well, he will ignore me and rub himself all over my books because he knows I like them. It probably depends on the cat and relationship.
One of my guys has an extremely tiny infrequent purr. Instead, he gets a ridge of raised hair down his back when he's feeling happy happy joy joy. Very odd

I'm not any too worried about my cats purring. From time to time, all three of them do. Said that to ask you this. What do you make of a cat that meows much more than it used to?
My oldest kitty, Lady Shoes, is nearly 15 yo. She's the one I told you about. She can't jump up into my lap anymore, but, at least some of the time, she's managed to hoist herself up into my lap, essentially by climbing my chair. When she can't make it, I scoop her up onto my lap.
I guarded a cat who lived to at least 21 years old. Since she could be somewhat temperamental, I named her Joanie after Joan Collins, who was notorious for her bitchiness in the 80s. Towards the end of her life, she got rather chatty and would mistake my friends for me. She lost a lot of mobility and by the time I realised that she could no longer walk, I decided to have her put down. The vet gave her a shot and left the two of us alone together to experience our final moments on Earth with one another. The memory of her eyes, as she looked at me, is something that I cannot put into words. I only know a few words and small ones, but let me say this. I could see the love in her eyes as she faded away. I brought her home, wrapped her in one of my favourite tee shirts, and buried her in my back yard.
Lady Shoes is beginning to remind me of Joanie. Lady Shoes climbs onto my lap, gets petted and and meows; I stroke, she meows. Lately, Lady Shoes has been wandering off into a corner of my office, but she isn't doing her business there. When I call her name, she emerges from the corner. She'll meow and scratch a table leg. Lady Shoes' sister, The Divine Ms Marple, exhibited similar behaviour before she died, apparently experiencing seizures in a corner of my hallway. Shortly before she died, she became aggressive towards me, something that I attribute to the deterioration of her brain.
