I feel like maybe people hear "7 years" and don't catch that he said that's when they just started discussing the possibility. The movie wasn't actually greenlit until 2017, and then it was probably just in pre-production for a number of years after that to workshop ideas, script, etc. So it definitely hasn't been in full-on production for 7 years.

These are the reactions that I love to see. You are definitely a true Mario fan and I felt the same. My expectations weren't that high but when I saw that Ferrari quality CGI, i shed some tears. That is the kind of respect that Mario and video game fans of all generations deserve.
