Oracle database on AWS cloud enters limited preview

Oracle Corp. today announced a limited preview of its Exadata Database offering on the Amazon Web Services Inc. cloud.

The announcement makes good on plans Oracle announced in September that appeared to put an end to the long-standing feud between the two companies. Oracle co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Larry Ellison has repeatedly taken jabs at his cloud rival, saying in 2018 that Oracle has a “10- to 20-year lead on Amazon in databases.” Amazon responded that Oracle’s data warehouse wasn’t cloud-native and was technically inferior to AWS’s RedShift.

Those differences now appear to be a thing of the past. AWS customers can soon run Oracle’s Exadata Database Service on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure on AWS infrastructure, starting with the AWS US East Region. They already have similar capabilities on Microsoft Corp. Azure and Google LLC’s Cloud Platform.

Oracle is the world’s most popular database management system, followed by its MySQL open-source counterpart, according to SolidIT Consulting & Software Development gmbh’s DB-Engines ranking. The claims to have more than 430,000 customers in 195 countries.

Customers can migrate Oracle Database workloads, including Oracle Exadata and Oracle Real Application Cluster, to the cloud using a low-latency network connection. They can more easily connect data in their Oracle databases to applications running on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, including AWS Analytics services.

They can also take advantage of AWS’ artificial intelligence AI services, including Amazon Bedrock, a fully managed service that provides access to various foundation models from Amazon and other vendors. Oracle said it will operate and manage Oracle Exadata Database Service.

The deal provides for unified database administration, billing and customer support with Oracle Database@AWS managed from the AWS Management Console. Migration can be accelerated with Oracle’s Zero Downtime Migration tools and Oracle Database use qualifies for existing AWS commitments and existing Oracle license features such as Bring Your Own License, a program that enables organizations to apply their existing Oracle software licenses to equivalent services in the cloud.

Oracle said customers can also unify their data across Oracle and AWS platforms for analytics, machine learning and generative AI as well as combine EC2, Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service and Amazon Elastic Compute Service with Oracle Database 23ai features such as AI Vector Search.
