This movie and the prequels make the Alien universe so small…
Honestly, the more times I've seen the Rook vfx, the better it looks, especially on blu-ray.
But here's my question. Why wouldn't the crew of the Nostromo have been aware that Ash was a synthetic if he was, presumably, mass produced? I liked Romulus a lot, but I feel like we should have left Prometheus and Covenant out of this. I may be in the minority here.
Finally got around to watching Romulus… Not only was the use of the "Get awy from her you b-tch" line awkward and cringe, it also wasn't accurate.
Ripley was speaking to the alien QUEEN (a female), so b-tch was accurate.
Andy was speaking to an alien "drone", which i've always assumed are males… and to a dead one at that.
Made no sense.
Flowers for Algernon transformation? I got a more "Steve Urkel -> Stefan Urkaal" vibe from it.
Q; What's the difference between a Reddit mod and a self-serving POS with a god-complex?
A: I don't know.
Yeah, they totally blew the big chap thing ciuld have done so much with it and they just side quested his ass
Anyone notice the electricity inside the head of one of the Xeno's?..what was that about?..
A return for the alien?..it's a beast dude..1 alien is basically no different than another..
It was a good looking movie and I like a decent amount of the things they did in the film. It was interesting to not see any eggs, but I guess they mostly explain that. I liked that "Ian Holm's face" android Rook, but even after DECADES of this type of technology (really started with Gollum in LOTR), it doesn't look natural. Given that a sequel has been greenlit, there is a TV show coming and apparently we are also going to see Alien Isolation 2 at some point, I cannot complain. There was some stupid shit, but on the whole, it was quite a bit better than Alien Covenant IMO.
Always a pleasure listening to one of your videos
Glad i can finally watch this now. I rele enjoyed the movie and its adherance to the feel and world universe of the original. Im gonna get super flak but i think i preferred it over aliens. That said i think a lot that i overlooked in the spectacle and awe will show up in subsequent viewings
It was a pretty decent movie. I just wish they didn't try stealing the black goo DNA recombination thing. And "get away from her….. you b***h" made my head hurt.
Romulus was a huge disappointment for me. But there are people who thought Prometheus was good so…
I think the whole "So we found substantial wreckage of the Nostromo, of which there was miraculously – and done would say unbelievably – loads left after three huge thermonuclear explosions, and that big chap alien that was ejected from the escape pod thousands of km away had even more unbelievably floated back there and was still viable, even though it wasn't a queen" was the weakest load of bullshit I'd ever had to swallow to move past. What they should have done was find the Sulaco's remains floating in space, as we don't know for sure what happened to it in movie lore, and if the alien queen had left one egg that caused the assumed acid leaks which led to fires / escape pod ejections, then she could have left two, and that other one could have been found quite legitimately and believably.
I'm finally coming to see this video after Hulu premiere😂
Hold the phone. Holm’s widow said he felt Hollywood wasn’t offering him roles?? Maybe because he refused to leave the UK?? This is referenced in behind the scenes in The Hobbit. His scenes had to be filmed in the UK because he didn’t want to travel anymore.
That’s all. I just had to say something when I heard that.
Nope.
Didn't do it for me.
64 year old massive Alien fan here.
All your negatives are mine plus it comes across to me as a kiddies movie full of kiddies.
It has to appeal to the younger generation I guess…
I thought Prometheus and Covenant were absolutely brilliant and we should have rather gone in those directions rather than what is basically a rehash of the original Alien movies.
Oh what a thrill! I really enjoyed the movie but sometimes the throwbacks and nods to the other movies got under my skin…
The famous "get away from her…" quote felt misplaced and unnecessary.
Overall i thought it was a very positive surprise, and a great addition to the Alien franchise.
Right, so the events of Alien: Romulus are set in the year 2142 making it around 20 years after the events of original film. So that being the case how come it took so long (20 years) for the company (Weyland-Yutani) to find the wreckage of the USCSS Nostromo and thus stumbling across the cocoon of the original Alien? Not to mention that the Alien was blasted out into space some distance away from where the Nostromo actually self destructed?
So all that being said. Why didn’t Weyland-Yutani just set a course straight for Acheron (LV-426) as they clearly would have had all the information about the derelict spacecraft and the thousands of Xenomorph Eggs stored within it’s cargo hull and also that one of the crew members (Kane) was impregnated by a Facehugger.
Anyone have any thoughts on this??
Am I the only one that finds the theory about the father of Kay's baby weird? It's weird to think it's Bjorn, he's Kay's cousin. That was established in the beginning of the movie right, Tyler apologizes for his cousin being a jerk to Andy right, so now the theory is that the cousin the father of his cousins baby…..let's come up with a new one please
Great video!!!
25:34 although I can see how the Newborn & the Offspring are “clumsy & awkward” due to the human DNA I wish they were slightly less human and more xeno, almost a combination of the Newborn, Offspring and xeno. Maybe something more in the Neomorph design.
The Black Goo compound is an accelerant. It was genetically engineered by WeyYu to speed up the gestation timeline.
12:44 PWB turns out to be box office poison. See Solo and Dial of Destiny box office for confirmation.
11:47 isn’t fan service a good thing? Especially if done well. Sequels are in fact Fan Service.
8:45 Ian had to turn down appearances in the audio book & video game due to health reasons.
The new born in Alien Resurrection is so stupid. That Alien movie should be deleted from the franchise.
Dude, Merced would've been a so much better "Ripley" in that movie. Her acting is spot on, much better than Spaeny. She gets little screen time, but she's the one who delivers the best horror reactions.
Another great episode my friend. Love your passion, fellow alien nerd.

the phrase i perfer artificial person myself is a line every android in Aliens uses except Ash so i think its fine.
its the 3rd best Alien movie but it reuses way too much from all the other movies
Greetings from Spain. I'm sorry, but I totally agree with what a Spanish critic wrote about this movie. He wrote that the opening scene is a very meta moment, because it shows what Hollywood keeps doing these days: diging up the scraps of classic films in order to produce inferior, derivative copies. To me, that's how Romulus feels. It feels like a collage of classic moments that were done better in the past, because Alvarez and his team just don't know how to create THEIR OWN iconic moments. But then again, I'm 52. I grew up in the 1980's, when we were going through a sci-fi golden age. An when you grew up with the original Star Wars trilogy, Alien & Aliens, The Thing, Terminator & Terminator 2, etc, something like Romulus is always going to feel like Star Wars XVIII: Please give us your money.
Have I gone mad??? How can anyone like this piece of garbage??? Insane!! I stick to my not acknowledging anything alien related than original two and yea, 3 and resurrection…i orefer those than anything afterwards, especially cheesy cringy romulus
'Get a Ray from her, I'm butch (now)' great deep dive as always 🙏 I made the same video, I need that chrysalis explained
The comic book prequel is out, hope you make a video on it.
My thought with the first chestburster scene is that it didn't stay on long enough for full gestation so it didn't have enough strength to burst out. Why did the chestburster decide to arrive early? I don't have a great answer but it might be a stress response of some sort or another result of a reduced facehugger implantation time? Just spitballin here.
Bravo, great review! I just have now seen A.R. for the first time, and you have almost perfectly captured every impression l took away from the film. Most importantly, l think the character of Andy was the highlight of the film, and the actor who played him was, in his own, very different way, as effective as Fassbender playing both David and Walter. And l had never expected to see such a great performance in any Alien film ever again, but he absolutely delivered. I sincerely hope we'll get a sequel to this, just so l can can get more Andy in my life.
Also, my initial impression of the usage of Ian Holmes' likeness in a new character was that it was extremely well and respectfully done. If his family is happy with it, then so am l.
My suspicion was correct…it was naff.
I thought The Offspring was genuinely very disturbing to look at. Most movie monsters don't make me want to cringe away from them, but the weird humanoid face and the way it stood /moved really bugged me. I will say, though… I wish it had a little less Engineer-ness about it. I feel like a more generally human face would have helped them beat the "movie full of callbacks" allegations… and also made it even more horrible to look upon.
32:00 Yeah agree 100% – I would love to see an alternate cut of the film with all of those call back lines replaced with a different take, maybe one day?
😇
I came straight to you after watching 🎉
Agree on the callbacks, reminds me of the Predator movies after P2. For some reason they felt the need to replay every line from P1 and it was ridiculous. I very much loved Prey for not doing that yet still able to capture some of that secret sauce of the first movie.
The Bio-Weapons Division should re-assess whatever material Ripley's harpoon was made of. That harpoon survived 20 years of acid blood exposure without dissolving! It looks like it could be re-used. Hmm, body armor?? And this movie was bad. More derivatives in it than the stock shares that these movie plots have been slaved to.
I thought the same thing about the bitch line. Like why the hell would he say that. I assumed the warriors are male & not bitches. For a min it yanked me out of the flick.
I would love to see Big Chap’s story on the station made in to a film.
"THAT's what's best for rain." is actually a great line and would have played better.
Since you spent a long time talking about Rook and Ash, I just want to say that at the end they use him in the screens at the end just his face and if they had plugged the android body into the computer and then his face appeared in all the screens and then he would be talking from the screens the whole folm. It would've been so much more believable and acceptable, and he could be kind of scary by being everywhere omi present manipulating the situation. Would've been so much more believable as well it wouldn't look fake as it does.
Was waiting till I watched it last night to come here. Mane i really enjoyed the film. Andy ninja catching the face hugger, acid blood heart pop && zero g acid blood sequence were standouts. The Ash de-age was laaaame (shit look like busted vhs) & hybrid xeno was weird and NOT scary (engineer or no) but great film
