I wonder if the research for the first story was done at the Dog Cognition lab at Columbia University with Dr Alexandra Horowitz.
I would disagree with intelligence=genetics, neither amongst same species. + Their argument regarding them not learning over time is absolutely wrong and we all know it as universal truth called dogs do learn tricks over time/LEARN. The study is at list a bit wrong my guts would/ might argue.
Smart puppies!
James Spader is on SciShow now?
How are golden retrievers smart? Mine never retrieved an ounce of gold. 😂
Engineering explained t-shirt, a man of culture 💪
I knew before any evidence 😤
I'm glad that this study on puppies could help breed better dogs for service but, I also kind of fear the information could also be used to promote the idea that Prue breeds are smarter than mutts. This isn't always the case and people use this reasoning to not adopt from shelters. Also many breeders don't allow for enough genetic diversity and the dogs have health problems. I have a Prue bred German Shepherd who more often than not is missing huge chunks of hair because he is allergic to everything. We recently got him allergy tested again and have added grass, yes grass, to the long list. We have to buy special dog food for him because he is allergic to a lot of ingredients. We have to give him medication regularly to help with the arthritis in his hips . He is ageing poorly considering he is seven and my mom had a lab mutt of about the same size and he lived to be eighteen and was healthy as a horse till a week before his death. I really hope this study doesn't go to furthering breeding more dog with health problems. It's hard to see your dog suffer and I know some breeders will put down unhealthy pups who have it worse than my dog.
I have an auditory processing disorder and I find I accidentally interrupt people or think someone else has interrupted me when they haven't all the time. It is especially frustrating if I'm really tired, it's near impossible to have a conversation with me without me getting upset because, I can't get my words out. I wonder what could even be done if scientist find out exactly how to fix that part of the brain in people like me that would even help considering I don't think anyone would find brain surgery worth it unless the problem was severe. That without even considering the cost of medical bills. At least with video calls we will eventually be able to achieve pretty smooth connections, we already have pretty good ones already that should keep that from being too much of a hiderance.
Dogs are better than cats. Deal w/ it.
Scientist 1: "Awww these cute birds sing so beautifully"
Scientist 2: "Yes they sure are amazing"
Scientist 1: "You wanna drill some probes in their brains?"
Scientist 2: "Sounds like a great idea!"
Humans have this ability to? Where was i when it was being handed out? I never know when it's my turn to speak
So basically a dog IQ test?
This same study done in humans would be condemned. You can’t be “born smart” based on genetics due to current political sensitivities.
Funny how some people will admit that intelligence in dogs is heritable, but they'll call you evil if you think the same applies to humans.
I so enjoy all of your channels
Hall & Oates. SciShow really knows how to connect with the kids.
So this should apply to humans too.
So iq is genetic.
Dogs are the best ❤️
Some researchers have to get in to the study with cute puppies and not greet them with high-pitched puppy voice, to serve as reference groups. That task has got to be impossible!
I wish I could hit mute on my brain when someone is talking to me! I get distracted and forget to listen a lot
Love the Engineering Explained shirt!
Really like the "Engineering Explained" merch
That engineering explained shirt!
Me with others: my Doberman is a great communicator!
My boy at home: derp
(I'm kidding he's amazing!) ❤❤
You got me with puppies.
thank – you .
Just wait…And Planet of The Puppies will soon arrive!
That Engineering explain shirt
This is BULL CRAP! The "scientist" just wanted to PLAY WITH PUPPIES, so they made up some "experiments" to spend HOURS AND HOURS with those wonderful creatures. Look I understand WHY they did it, but come on, no one believes you played with puppies and had time to take notes, instead of just DYING FROM THE CUTENESS.
Maybe this can explain why some people are worst at this than others. For example, I’m autistic and it could be related.
This is why programs like GDB breed their own dogs instead of using shelter dogs. They’re bred to be as healthy and intelligent as possible. Their success rate is astounding. Using shelter dogs to train as service dogs is great, but it’s not very reliable.
None of the comments address the subject of this SciShow video. Most are failed attempts at kiddie humor. Depressing.
Clickbait garbage, nobody cares about the link between communication and genes. Also communication skills and obedience isn't the equivalent of intelligence, but whatever floats your boat
would love to see the grant write up for Those experiments lol
I notice stuff like this with my dog (a pitbull/pointer mix), he picks up on commands that i never explicitly taught him just based on context clues, like telling him to “back up” from the front door or to “come around” when there’s an obstacle between us that the leash will get caught on
They have a breeding program and they’ve been selecting for this for decades. But yes, dogs look to us.
Wild dogs, generally speaking, are sociable animals, which is how they determine rank, establish relationships, etc. Is it possible that this skill simply moved from one focus (other dogs) to another (humans)? Do other animal species with distinct social interactions also transfer them to humans?
I wonder if that study on the wren could potentially help w autism research. Like what if it has to do with having delays in social cues and such
Wait… so you're saying that intelligence and/or at least some skills are *inherited through genes*?! Does that make race realists right?!
So basically those birds are jazz musicians
