Your digital wallet is getting a little thicker today in a big way. You can now add your US Passport to Google Wallet. Unfortunately, you can’t use it as your passport.
What’s the point, then?

Right now, you have the option to use a digital ID when passing through select TSA checkpoints. Instead of handing the officer your physical ID, you can scan the digital ID QR code or tap your mobile device on the digital ID reader. A message on your mobile device will ask you to consent to share your digital ID information with TSA. Once you consent, the camera will take your picture.
Several months ago, Google announced the ability to create a digital ID in Wallet using your passport. You can’t use it at border control or immigration, but you can use it at these checkpoints. The biggest advantage is that you can prepare your digital ID while you’re waiting in line instead of when you get to the checkpoint.
The feature is now rolling out more widely and ultimately coming to all Wallet users.
How to add your passport to Google Wallet
Open the Wallet app and choose “Add to Wallet” and “ID.” “Create an ID pass with your passport.” You’ll scan the page with your photo and personal information using your camera and then scan the security chip in the back cover of your passport through NFC. The app will ask you to take a selfie video to verify your identity. After a few minutes, Google Wallet will notify you that your ID pass is ready.
Google says it’s working with partners to expand the use of digital IDs for other things, such as account recovery, identity verification, and even car rentals.
This feature is rolling out gradually, so if you don’t see it right now, you should over the next few weeks.
