If this video made you curious and you like reading great and long sci fi books, check out the three body problem by Liu Cixin, who formulated the dark forest idea for the first time. And with that, we say good bye to the year 12,021. It truly was a wild time, and passed so, so quickly. For us at the Kurzgesagt team it was full of changes and achievements and we learned so much and tried so many new things. And we have so many exciting ideas and projects that we can’t wait to share with you next year! I know I say this often but doing Kurzgesagt really is just such a joy. We only can do this because of you, so thank you so, so much. We appreciate it more than you might imagine. Have wonderful holidays and get safely into the year 12,022. We’ll see you on the other side! – Philipp

The idea that we are the first civilization based on prosperity through peace is truly fucking frightening, that others have only prospered through violent conflict, even developing technologies that reflect this by ripping uncaring holes into spacetime to travel across the stars, just to violently strip another planet down to its core. Those engines destabilize the universe more and more, eventually leading to its collapse.
We haven't even made it out of our solar system, but a brilliant flash of white light burns the entire system away. This is the End of the small Sol system and its insignificant monkeys. All we can do is be suddenly dead bystanders to a war on universal nature millions of years in progress.
Dark forest ignores 2 roles, game warden and Shepherd
When I think about stuff like this I remember the rules of our planet and apply it to the Universe as a whole just to be safe. Think about the ocean, from microbes to massive whales. For all we know we could be the microbes of the Universe. There is always something bigger we may not know about. Our entire universe could be on the back of some exponential deity or similar being, something so undeniably large and vast that it as a whole reaches a scale incomprehensible. A size so large that if we attempted to understand it it would be so much information our minds would overflow with data. When I think of data and information I remember the concept of suicide and depression. Humans often kill themselves when they realize or come to an unbelievably awful conclusion. Something so bad it makes one no longer desire to live. Going back to the "Incomprehensible Data" thing it might be some much that we kill ourselves just to be rid of the information or we destroy everything we know about it and everything we had to even discover it, literally and metaphorically blinding ourselves.
I am not an expert, I'm some guy from Nevada who simply enjoys letting his mind wander, take everything here with a grain of salt, maybe a whole tablespoon's worth of it
Space gang wars
amazing thank you
amazing than kyou
Where is the 2021 send off at the end of the video? Why did you remove it?
This is a game 3:09 3:15 3:38
It would be interesting to see this story tied to the evolution of trust in game theory.
We are energy beings, this physical life is impermanent and a voyage of our consciousness. I’m waiting to see what the afterlife brings
It makes sense now. The asteroid from the Cretaceous was actually an alien weapon used to wipe out life and take over the planet!
We're the aliens
"So… What should we do?"
"The Universe belongs to Humanity. We shall conquer it all." 😂
And that's why I like Warhammer because it's humans doing what humans would do 😂
imagine getting a code from space and after decoding it you get "turn your light off, the others might see you.."
And technological advancement may be a blink of the eye to a race that travels the stars. Imagine a race that travels near light speed, they may travel to their other worlds in subjective weeks but externally hundreds or thousands of years pass due to time dilation. To them any technological civilisation can become a threat within one or 2 journeys. It is feasible that a civilisation may adapt to doing the first 30 years of their adult life on a planet improving their tech and industry – living normally, then doing '10 years' subjective in their space forces. But many thousands of years pass by externally before they retire. Maybe they just like to travel. But either way if travel to a very high % of C becomes normal then your civilisation starts jumping through the eons with ease, even through the entire life of the universe. Any civilisation that becomes slightly technological is suddenly also spreading into the galaxy the week after subjectively to you. They could already be at war with a part of your empire before you get home to pass on the news. First strike as soon as you find them could be the logical choice.
This reminds me of Ender's game a bit. Can't communicate, must attack first. But in reality not enough effort was made to actually communicate.
40k is basically the only realistic sci-fi even with the demons and phyics etc, all we have to look forward to is an eternity of war in the dark, and all with no plot armour.
Emperor protect us all.
if you wanna tell the aliens that we're peaceful, just spam shift
I just can’t see a type 3 or higher civilization going with the destroy or conquer route. There has to be a reason why they’re type 3 for a reason. I’m sure their technology will be so advanced that they will realize if we’re friendly or not.
But what if animals are aliens and even us its just that we call them animals because they live in our planet
If there's hunters than they should be far more preys out there.
Lol we haven’t even meet alien and already we are talking about nuking their planet. We just want to be Warhammer 40k so bad. 😂
8:28 I dunno that this is such a certainty, we could very well all be dead within the century
This theory denies everything that needs for a space age civilization. Couriousity, tolerance, objectivism, risk-taking…
Damn, that ending hit me way, WAY harder than I anticipated, even though I saw it coming from a mile away. Well done, guys. Damn.
Do not answer! Do not answer!! Do not answer!!!
Cold War space edition
How unremarkable is a solar system with no Super-Earths, no hot Jupiters, and no stuff closer to the Sun than Mercury?

The worst part of this is that eveye civilization stands a net postive by making us think this isnt real, the worse things get on earth the better chance they have at wiping us out. With a simple gaslight and a few people stepping in to be the "voice of reason" to place humanity as the main characters of the universe or forerunners we decsent into destruction peacefully. Not with a bang but with a whimper. I doubt every civilization exists with the majority of the population being consumers who seek endless entertainment while the minority actually invent and improve things/study. The middle men repair things and can follow directions over long years of training. We're light years behind everyone else. Imagine if all the money obsessed people focused on art and science. Study became the main focus of society, and managing resoeuces was just an easy chore to keep the lights on and feed the scholar crew. Instead we have 2 billion cashiers. 😢
I think this mindset and way of thinking is exactly why we don't get contacted. I think we are so shortsighted and the aliens know it
Even Universe has its own Battle Royale.
STUPID VIDEO
9:22 just like me fr
I think exponential population growth will need to end for most advanced civilizations to be successful. In that case, the need to colonize other star systems is minimal and the visibility of a civilization will be limited unless they want to be seen. As for the theory itself, assuming everyone lives on planets is a flawed strategy. We've already figured out the concept of protecting missiles and mutually assured destruction and we're not even remotely as advanced as these theoretical civilizations. With automation, rebuilding industry after losing a planet is not particularly hard even with low population. So really the first strike strategy is just a way to create a whole lot of powerful enemies who exist solely to get revenge on you.
Imagine you are targeted by aliens and given terrifying power
There could be Alien ships that are already making their way towards Earth. It's just that they might reach a desolate empty planet (in a 100 million years).
