Why Does Your Cat Lick and/or Bite You?

My cat purrs and meows until I pick him up. Once he’s in my arms he bites my fingers or hand. And he bites HARD! Purring all the time. Is he bipolar???

I would like to know why when my alarm goes off my 2 cats take turns cleaning my hair. No need to hit the snooze button I'm awake now after getting my hair spit shined. I love my kitty girls they are so sweet and affectionate but I could do without the hair cleaning, I wonder if I started liking their heads if it gets them to stop? Just kidding I wouldn't do that, I just grin and bear it.

I want so much to take her in the car with me when I go off or if I had Alicia walk around or something, I don't feel like dragging the cage in and out her little bit but when I first got her I didn't realize what was happening. I'm learning each day about cats. But you know what? She had an awful awful awful smell in my car. I couldn't get rid of it. No matter what I used then I used pints all that was the only thing to get rid of the scent. It seems like maybe now to this day. It's slightly coming through the air, but II still spray it with pine salt. Nothing work not even lysol bleach or nothing but that car. I thought I was gonna throw up. Smelling that everyday.I got in my car.And finally built up and then I smelt it.I said well what's wrong with my sniffer?I didn't smell it till now.Yes, that that that smell was awful.When she was a kitten, she was in my car.But I just can't do that but she's getting used to stay at home by herself

I think one of my cats, Samson, just adopted me as soon as we got him home. I distinctly remember the day we got him home, he was kind of hiding, shy, and nervous. I sat down and just did nothing. Let him come to me. He walked over, sniffed me, and started licking me. Made biscuits and everything. I let him lick me, even to this day, 10 years later, if Im not in the mood for licking, but I dont mind cuddling, I just cover up with long sleeves or a blanket.

Funny story. My other cat, Dante, doesnt have any interest in human food. Period (exactly the opposite of Samson who can and HAS stolen sandwiches and sips out of a glass of milk). He is also not a licker or a fluffer. Except one day, I decided to try to use honey to help with my acne, which was on my forearms at that point. I put it on, and let Dante sit on my lap, not thinking anything of it. Until I feel a sniff and tenative "lick" on my arm. Then he keeps going. Like a cat possessed he would not stop. I was very surprised and vaguely amused, either he liked the taste or thought I was dirty, and honey at the very least shouldnt be harmful to cats, to my knowledge. If it is.. well. He seems fine 8 years later. 😅
The reason I say he mightve thought I was dirty is that he has a sixth sense about when I put lotions on and has attempted to lick whatever it is off despite looking like he despised the smell. Ive had a cold where I put some Vicks Vaporub on and his face just wrinkles up like he's going to puke and then he attempts to lick me anyway. I never let him, of course (because it seems a lot more harmful than honey), but it was amusing.

Hello! thanks for your informative video. My cat comes to me for cuddles at my desk, face to face/nose to nose, and I pet and scratch his head and neck and he purrs and purrs, and then he licks and bites my fingers. He does this around 4:30 every day. I love the affection, but the bites sometimes hurt. If I pick him up and put him down on the floor, he'll still hang around for affection and bite my toes (also hurts a bit!), and the message I'm sending is not exactly what I want to convey. ie I want the licking and the affection to continue! but not the biting. Is that possible? Am I missing the point? thanks!

I have started doing yoga and when I am doing this she won’t leave my toes alone. Is it o.k.if I put her in the bedroom with a few toys for 20 minutes?

I had to leave my cat alone in the house for an ENTIRE 26 HOURS one time. She was so happy to see me she stood on her hind legs and put her paws up like a little kid saying up, up! Licked me, and bit me right on the face, but it was fine. She was not being aggressive, and she knows not to bite hard even in rough play sessions, her little cat body was just so full of happy to see you hormones she had to let them out somehow. And she was a little pissed off she was left alone. If anyone is thinking this could become a horrible habit, you are correct. But understanding your cats behavior just becomes second nature at some point. It's a silent understanding between the 2 of you. That's why it is so hard to put into words

It has nothing to do with evolution. Cats are wild animals. We domesticated them.

Thank you Jackson, I have a black male cat named Jaxon, who loves to lick and bite as you mentioned in your video. He is beautiful and a big boy, kinda in the category of a gentle giant, when my girlfriend passed she had asked me to take over his care. I love him, he is so disciplined and just a great companion. I had thought of sending you a question for a solution, when he gets in the mood to give me a licking/biting session, I would ask him, why are you biting me and gently tell him that hurts. I was concerned about it, but I always handled him gently. I also have a “female orange tabby”, Logan, who is a pistol. After listening to one of your educational sessions about tabby’s, especially females, I fully understood the ‘why’s’ of her actions. She actually is a pistol with Jaxon as well. I am amazed, how relentless she is until I comply. It’s hilarious, how your educational videos really assist with love to their needs. When I learned about your baby and the loss, I fully felt your pain. Like you, I could write a book about my past history of loss regarding my babies.
