Finally someone who explained why you use and how to use grayscale and some awesome tips. Idk y some of these artist on here are afraid to help ppl. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain. Now I am inspired! Question do you have an Udemy class?
Wow…you posted this 8 years ago?? I drew a similar concept recently, but this is so much better…don't try to get me drawing again, I've already put in 7 1/2 hours today.
Excellent. I used to do the grayscale with color layer back with paintshop pro. making unreal tournament skins. Now making t shirt art. your vids have been instrumental in getting me back into using this technique. thanks a lot. too bad you have not made vids in years. stay safe. 👍
outstanding work
The art is great, as always. Keep Flowing bro.
Peace
Thank you, this is the best tutorial video I've found! Very helpful!
very clear and helpful. thank you
I'm new to digital art and this helped me so much!! I have been searching for something like this in a long time, and no one but you made the puzzle make sense :D!! THANKS
Thanks, PBRYANT23! One of my favorite videos you've done! Awesome! Very helpful! But for those of you who might be stuck on finding the right value for a particular color, Sycra has a video on value and color for greyscale. He mentions the same problem about the color you want not matching the value you chose for the greyscale.
It's in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2fZdGZKP1k&t=51s
I can totally relate to all you're saying. especially the coloring the grayscale painting part.
you are a BEST TEACHER.
Thanks, I feel so silly i kept putting the color to multiply instead, and if not that i was trying to put the grayscale to multiply but it had no white in that actual layer and all this other stuff bleh u really helped me
Hey, this really helped me out alot thank you very much I hope to see more videos from you 😀
Bro what happened? Are you still around?
the one big guy colored looks like carvanha xD
An advantage to working in pure colour is that it makes the painting process much more natural. A problem I've encountered when working in multiply layers, is that you can't simply use the colour picker to re pick whatever colour you were previously using.
This is rectified by having a palette layer, but I feel this process is even more time consuming for those reasons. If you work in full colour you can change the colour of each hue in the adjustments tab
Best video
man so awesome! ty for sharing your knowledge. photoshop is so intimidating to a beginner but you are an excellent guide. You're an incredible artist! thanks again 😊
Great tutorial! May I ask, what brush were you using in the video? It seems to work really well to get the soft texture.
You are simply wonderful. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and talent. <3
Thank you! Very helpful and easy to grasp the idea as a beginner.
can you explain about the masking layer thing please?
Just watching your videos made me remotivated to continue my dream of becoming a concept artist since I became disheartened after I started to think that I would never make it. Thanks for the great advice!
Thank you so much for taking your time to explain the blending modes ;A; The whole gray scale thing was hard for me to "self-teach"
hello, I think your job is really great. I would like to do the same technics than you to draw and I have a question about the brush you use on your video at 0:50. I would like to know how you manage to have a brush that change from black to grey on the brush preview. thanks a lot for this video
Your explanation of why to use grayscale first was incredibly helpful. Seriously. And thank you for sharing your experience with watching some online tutorials and feeling frustrated that it seems to come so easily to those artists. It's nice to be reminded that they went through the stages of frustration themselves. Dude, honestly, great stuff. Very re-motivating and I appreciate it.
Haha thanks sir, its very nice to watch and informative.
thank you so mutch man i have learned a lot
It really depends on what your used too. I came from a traditional canvas painting experience and I funny enough have found it quite hard to get my head around black and white and hence I stick with pure color still with artrage 4. Its just because I am so used to working with colors from the get go its just the way I have learned to do art. Also I personally feel greyscale and then overlaying has a faded out tone of color too it vs a pure color painting.
God ! You just made mu day! Thanks
i always wondered how to do the shading like that thankyouuuuuuu soooooo much
thank you jesus! new to photoshop, and trying to color/shading getting used to painting this makes it much easier to play around with different colors, thanks for breaking it down as you go…much help!
Thank you so much! Now I know what i was missing. Thank you very much for sharing. I like these kind of tutorials 🙂

Like most commenters here—I was just about to throw in the towel altogether. I do appreciate grayscale and it really makes a world of a difference to me. Not having had traditional lessons, I realize I need to learn more about values and coloring (choosing the right colors)—all of that terrifies me. Hearing you say, "it's going to be frustrating,"—takes a lot of the pressure off me now. Thank you for saying that. I understand artists (or anyone for that matter) can't be better overnight because it takes practice and patience, so thank you for reminding me to take my time. I also like your idea of downloading other images to color. I often become too attached to my piece, so you can imagine the frustration there, haha. Overall, there was a lot to take in from this video. Thank you for sharing that knowledge! Take care! ^_^
I have an art contest and decided to go with digital as a challenge to myself(I don't do digital though. I am new to this) so I was stuck hardcore. Thanks sooooooooooooooooooo much.
you are a good man :D:D i couldn't find the right video as I was struggling with this and didn't know how it was done and you made me a very happy man i tell you hahaha great video nice and a very clear explanation. im a member and looking out for your next tutorial, thanx a bunch

Thank you so much! transition from traditional pencil to digital has been really frustrating lately but using this method has helped a bunch!
As a traditional pencil artist trying to transition to digital, this is one of the BEST and most useful tutorials I've watched. Thanks so much!
Great video!! Thanks!
Thanks for your tutorials!
From all the tutorials I've been trying to watch, talking about grayscale > colour, you are the one who took the most time to explain what you were doing. Perfect. Thumbs up from me.
