I think that the monsters from the Upside Down are the ten previous children before eleven. The experiments with them failed and now they are stuck between the dimensions/whatever as some interdimensional monsters.

i have thought of a theory that may make sense. the fact that this egg hatched would make sense because after the "gate" between the the upside down and the real world was open the demogorgon was able to find other food sources (humans/animals/etc.) and since it can it doesnt have to rely completly on the eggs as a food source so that egg was able to hatch. that might also explain why we havent seen the monster that created the egg (there arent many of them since the demogorgon keeps eating the eggs becore they hatch)
MY GUESS IS THAT ELEVEN WENT TO THE UPSIDE DOWN TO SAVE HER FREINDS.
On the upside down concept art, maybe that is what it looks like. Every time someone entered the upside down, it was at night, so maybe the art is daytime upside down.

ok just hear me out and tell me what you think about this theory : what if the demon IS actully Elfie's "other side" version. The demon has psychic powers, so does Elfie. The demon is always hungry, Elfie ate a lot too (ok that may not be the best argument..). The demon feeds of the egg. Elfie now feeds of the waffles that (Tukker?) leaves for her in the woods.

==========-Can we take a minute and brainstorm/discuss how the monster originally got to Earth? In the flash back to 11 we see that they were using her to spy on the Soviets because the Cold War is still at its peak. So is it possible that 11 is able to transport her consciousness from her body to another place similar to how Professor Xavier is able to through cerebral? However, 11 doesn't use a machine to amplify her abilities, at least not always since they did use the radio machines that seemed to amplify her powers, but she instead uses the sensory deprivation tank. So, to the main point, maybe while transporting her consciousness 11 accidentally transported it to another dimension in which the monster scared her so much that she tried to use her powers and exerted so much energy doing so that it opened the portal between dimensions, and in the end she used that same amount of energy to kill the monster but also transported her body
