Not quite accurate. Dog breeds only really started having problems with tiny gene pools when Kennel clubs, the written standard, and closed stud books came in. That's when the inbreeding really started, not as a result of a lack in options, but in order to keep type most breeders will line(in)breed their dogs repeatedly with the occasional 'outcross' to an unrelated bloodline. Add to that tendency the issue of popular sires and only a tiny fraction of each generation contributing to the next, and you get severely inbred breeds in only a few generations. It only takes 4 generations of back breeding from a crossbreed to get a dog that is indistinguishable from any 'pure' bred individual, and yet the pure mentality would see this as the destruction of their breed rather than allow it to save what they've so thoroughly broken.
Our mutt is a border collie, healer, lab & husky (who knows what else) & is like 15 & still running around. I didn't know that about the genes. Makes sense why she's still kicking
