Looks fantastic hope it does well at the box office I believe it will people want escapism & this has that in spades!
I think the tone they struck in the trailer is just about perfect to fit the vibe of an actual D&D campaign. I've been gaming since the mid 80's and just about every D&D game I've played in or run has (or ends up) with a fairly pulpy/light hearted/action-comedy tone to some degree. I think if they went gritty like GoT or overly dramatic/serious like LoTR, it wouldn't have worked.
According to the panel at Comic-Con the SFX isn't finished, but I thought that what we saw mostly looked good (the black dragon strafe was excellent till the explosion on the ground at the end, which wasn't as impressive). I think they've got a good cast including people who've been D&D fans, and the directors/writers are reasonably well known and have some good work to their name. It could still be bad, but I'm much more optimistic than when I first heard that another D&D movie was in the works.
Wonder if they're hoping for a "D&D Cinematic Universe" tif they have enough success. It might seem implausible now, but the big summer blockbusters include Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Black Adam and Ant Man – and I think 20 years ago apart from a few aficionados those names wouldn't have got any recognition from most of the potential viewers. And it's not as if D&D doesn't have plenty of existing stories to adapt. Roll on D&D Dark Sun: Raiders of the Dune Sea I say.
It's been confirmed that it's set in the Forgotten Realms, so I think the main enemies are the Red Wizards of Thay (dressed in red, bald heads often with tattoos) and the lich would be Szass Tam.
Red Wizard of Thay
Not just a Paladin but a bad ass Paladin of SUNE the goddess of LOVE and Beauty LOL
I think this movie is going to be very good. The small detail of the black dragon hitting the catapult with it's acid breath and causing it to misfire are indicative of attention to detail. I had also read that they did a lot of 'on location' shooting instead of everything green screen.
I wonder if her being able to change into a owlbear is something that a druid or some tieflings can do in the 6th edition coming out in 2024? If so I wonder what else might be in the movie that's new. They worked close with the d&d people that they even made a prison because the writers wanted a prison in the movie.
Fred Zeppelin is a great band.
Red Wizard of They, the Bard is a Harper, takes place in Neverwinther & Icewind Dale
I loved the chunky red dragon there at the end, and the fact that they are actually distinguishing between the different species. An interesting choice diving into a gelatinous cube to escape a displacer beast lol. I am very hopeful about this movie, which in recent climates, is not a good thing lol. I mean it already looks better than the previous 3. Ya know, I they do bring in the ithilids, it could be a great way to get new kids into D&D, with all the stranger things kids going "wait didnt they steal that from ST? Oh snap its from way before" idk it worked to make Metallica popular again lol.
They are thieves, but I suspect it's more along the lines of being adventurers that are good at getting into tombs or other trapped places. And Chris Pine's Bard is wearing a clue as to who he is/was at the time they stole the horn (or possibly who he was pretending to be). Anyone that knows their Forgotten Realms lore would recognize it.
Careful about the soundtrack music. You might get a copyright strike. I expect Wizards of the Coast to release a Circle of the Owlbear Druid Archetype in 2023 😉
KR, take care you don't get a copyright strike with the sound track still playing. It might make sense to prepare a version without the sound track playing in the background. Thanks for the comments. I'm really looking forward to the film and hope it brings even more to the hobby.
I have high hopes for this movie. As an old school gamer I think it looks good. My only complaint would be wait for the release date.
My thoughts are that this is just a trailer. Seen too many that were just as "good" only to see the actual movie flame out on the runway. Chris Pine is e a cut rate Chris Pratt with a quarter of the charisma. He is not funny and the rest of the cast is there to be diverse for the sake of being diverse. If I see the movie, it will be when it is offered free on some service or channel. There was a run of five movies that had no name actors, no budget, and just bad cgi. Mythica was the series. But those movies had a better story than 90% of what comes out of Hollywood today.
How much $$ did they spend for the "Fred" Zeppelin rights lol
Cautiously optimistic. I expect an MCU-ish tone and presentation. But I do like that there is some adherence to Lore. Even if it's not great cinema but ultimately fun, it will be a worthy ride. But if it goes the route of the existing D&D movies… well, we old schoolers can only handle SO much disappointment. 😢
Hey Kevin, super surprised you had a med-week video. After the initial shock of seeing the trailer. I went back and watched it a few more times. I could give a list of dissatisfaction and opinions, but there's no need. I'm not even going to go see the movie, unless it gets really great reviews. I believe it will be good but not great.
Thanks Kevin you have a wonderful day!
I really hope this movie will come out good. I think modern movies sometimes try to hard to be original. I wish they would just play it safe and stick to what is known to be working. Just give us the movie we want.
