DnD basically making up role played stories, kinda improv and filled with shenanigans lol
I seen it suggested, watch The Legend of Vox Machina, pretty much based on Critical Role's DnD campaigns, the guys and gals who play are voice actors so they voice their own DnD characters.
DnD done right is roleplaying your character by the stats that you randomly rolled. Think improv with dice and theater of the mind.
Also, while you wait for this to come out, watch 'The Legend of Vox Machine', an adult animated series on Amazon based on a 4+ year DnD campaign.
Dungeons & Dragons is very much about coming up with your own stories (one person sort of running the overall plot, sort of like the director of a movie, plus several players who play the "main characters"), and games are often fairly light-hearted and irreverent. The idea of "the heroes screwed up and unleashed a big evil and now they have to fix it" is a fairly common kind of story in D&D games, so the movie is fairly accurate in that regard.
