Is there a part two? I have two ferals and they are really tough! This says there are more videos.
My problem is I named it sea bass but my grand daughter calls it seashell and my grand son calls it mochi. The poor kitty already has an identity crisis. 😝
Another trick l learned was using the “long spoon” – plastic spoons or sporks taped to a fishingline pole from an old toy. You can initially offer tiny amounts of food at a safe distance, and also start scratching their jowls and trying to pet them at a safe distance. Then I start moving my gloved hand closer down the pole as get a little more comfortable.
Hi, I accidentally fell in love with a neighborhood stray calico cat. She is about a year old. I bought a humane trap and tried to trap her so I can bring her inside out of the extreme cold we have now. I even have a large 42 inch dog crate ready for her to make the transition into my home. Problem, she is so smart, I tried tapping her and failed. I would like very much to love her as a house cat.
Thanks for this video and all the great comments below! I have been trying to tame a feral cat who had kittens in our backyard 2 yrs ago! We managed to get her spayed and home the kittens, but she is still very independent. We gave her a little house and I feed her everyday but we moved just outside of town and I have a deal with the person who bought our old home that i can come feed here whenever I'm in town. SO, she knows me, she knows her name and gets excited when I come over but is still very scared. When we still lived there, a year ago, I left the door ajar to see what she'd do and she slipped in and hid behind the wood stove to warm up. It gets cold and snowy here. I could tell she desperately wants a home and sees our other cats enjoying life inside when its cold but is just so scared. When I revealed myself she took off out the door. But she'd still come to the door and look in at us. We have rescued probably 15 cats and spayed half of them. We aren't professionals, just love animals. I'm going to trap her and bring her over to our barn where all her cat friends she used to hang out with in the in town yard now live. I'll have to have her inside for a while to build her trust and this video really helped. She's more scared than feisty but she silently hisses at me every time I show up w her food. It's like this little inside joke between us. I show up and call her, she pops out if her house or comes running out of the bushes meowing, I put her food in her dish, she silent hisses and meows and I say " yeah, yeah what else is new", she gobbles up her food and I say goodnight and go home. It's our little routine. But I know she likes me and expects me, so we have a 2 yr rapport. Wish me luck!
How do you catch them? Been feeding for months but still can't get within 3 feet. She meows and blinks, but won't get closer
I also like to make sure that my tetanus shot is up-to-date. I have a good record of not getting seriously bit or scratched, but knowing I’m at least covered in that way makes me feel more confident + my leather gloves.
I've been feeding an adult feral TNR cat for over two years now. She was about 4 years old when I first started feeding her, I noticed her walking thru my yard and you could see her ribs. The only reason I know her age is that my neighbor has a cat rescue and they were the ones who didi the TNR on her and the rest of her siblings in a litter of four cats found in our neighborhood behind a bar/pub. Recently, over a 6 month period I have been feeding her inside my garage and/or kitchen. Over the last week or two she decided she liked the cushy chair in my living room , and she started using it to groom, clean herself, and nap after eating in the nearby kitchen. The only way this is possible is that I've left the kitchen door into the garage cracked open for her to come and go, and I limit my movement around the house while she's inside. Sometimes if I get up and go somewhere inside the house out of her sight she'll get up and follow from a distance, then sit and wait for me to come back within her view. She's currently relaxing and dozing off in the chair, but she'll probably leave to go wander for the evening shortly…she's only slept inside overnight once just a few days ago. I'm retired now, so I've got time….before when I was at work my mother would feed her, but mom's home was finally finished being built and now it's just me and the cat…. a now plump, tuxedo cat named Aileen. I've never petted her, but I get slow eye blinks all the time, she comes running when I call her, and she'll often walk over a lay down a few feet away if I'm sitting outside.
How do you get the head bubble on and off a cat with bite habit?
A stray loves attention but then no trigger when the petting pauses he bites! The shelter won’t help and vet won’t see him unless I can provide home and landlord don’t allow pets 😠 I’m thinking I should lie to vet just so I can get him neutered and rabies vaccine and medical investigation into the weird bite behavior. Should I lie to vet to atleast prevent homeless kittens and rabies?
My 2 permanent adult cats–both originally from a cat colony!–keep growling at the new kittens. I figured the younger one would start playing with Ruby Midnight, but no! Any suggestions? I thought my cats would be welcoming! No fights, I've been careful about that, but just no playing and all growling…
I'm new at this. Got 2 feral sisters, one was ready to rehome in 3 days, the other and I are still struggling after 2 weeks. I think I've done everything right, just done it too slowly. And now I have lots of new ideas from this video! Thanks, from me and from shy little Persimmon!
This is an excellent video for both the preparation stage and the active training stage of socializing feral felines.
Thank you for the video. If you have the time to answer, Do you have any suggestions on bringing a friendly young feral into a house with pets already? We already have 2 dogs and 4 cats and I am worried about how it may react to the sudden chaotic change. My main two concerns are 1. Should it be kept away from other cats during the caged period, and 2. How do I prevent it from hiding away in corners its whole life in such a busy house
So grateful for this clip….I was on the verge of giving up on my feral kittie…..your tips really help. I will keep trying…
You're so right, we are their only hope in this cruel world. And thanks for saying that you've eventually been successful with all your ferals, that's encouraging.
Thanks for all the great, realistic tips. Very helpful
Thank you! This has been very helpful. ❤
I have a Ferrell that has been with us for the past 3 years. He hangs out in our yard around our chicken coup area. We feed him everyday and he's now coming closer to me when feeding him. But he's still really skittish.
We have a colony of feral cats that the neighbors want dead, it is so hard we’ve been taking care of them for a long time and getting turned down by sanctuaries the Humane Society cannot do anymore they are TNR. Can anyone take a colony? They are very close.😢 I’m in Wisconsin.
Best cat I've ever had was a feral. She looked like a Russian blue, but wasn't. Her offspring were incredibly sweet, intelligent and brave. I was 7 when I abducted her from a colony in Minneapolis, Minnesota back in the 80s. Mom and dad found out later. She was always touchy, she wasn't easy to nab…😅
Dude, I have no idea who you are, but I already admire you… Thanks for the great advice and your effort.
I believe that we, as human race, are responsible for "urban wild-life" and our production systems allow us to take care of all of the species that now are part of our community. We should take real action on keeping them safe and healthy the same way we think about the environment and other humans.
And… the reason I'm here right now: I just catch two feral cats, the kitten is already used to me, and I love him… his mother still thinks I might eat them any day, so I needed good advice, just like yours.
The cat I'm working with now was trapped, drugged, operated on, put in a trap again and driven around with cats next to her and on top of her with no air conditioning. Then she was released to my bathroom. When I first went in looking for her I couldn't find her. She managed to hide in the sink under a lot of boxes. When I got down to her she jumped up onto the shower curtain rod flipped over it and fell to the shower floor and then ran around the entire room. She ended up under the sink in the corner and hasn't come out for me. But she eats all of her food. I never saw a cat flip over a shower curtain rod before. But she was still groggy from the anesthesia. She's been through a lot already. 😢 So I am trying to be very patient.
Right now I have a feral cat in my bathroom. We did a trapping at my apartment complex and I thought since she was getting closer and closer outside I thought maybe she wanted to come home with me. She's been fixed and recovered here. I feed her several times a day. I used to talk to her outside and I hope she recognizes my voice. She uses the litter box and she eats all of her food. She refuses to leave the corner in the cabinet under the sink. She hisses at me but doesn't swipe at me. I worry I could mess her up for life if I do this wrong. It's only been a week. What can I do to make her feel safe? I talk to her when I feed her but she stays in the corner until I leave. Any suggestions or advice for me will be greatly appreciated.
My wife and I just took in a feral kitten who’s been in the area. They finished nursing not long ago and a few of them got run over, so we took one in to save it from the same fate. We were expecting him to not do well for a while. Surprisingly, after just 18 hours he’s acting like he’s lived here forever. He’s already super cuddly, follows us around, hangs out with us, I have to sit with him while he poops lol but he’s playing with all the toys, rubbing all over us, playing with us. We really thought it would take him longer because their mom would come to us and we’d feed them and stuff, but the kittens would always hiss and stay away from us lol we’re just happy he’s not scared or anything. He was for maybe 4 hours, but after a bath, some gentle flea removal, pets, toys, and food, he lit up

Thank you so much!
I been feeding and befriending feral cats since I was a lil kid. Always remember, when a cat chooses you as its hooman. He or she owns you.
I’m currently taking my first feral kitten she’s 5 months old and she’s really fiesty! Just putting clean litter and food in her cage she’ll hiss, spit and try to attack me! But I’m not going to give up xx
Where is part 2? I have been left with 3 cats that are not warming up to me after 6 months, no changes?

These are awesome tips!!! I wish I saw this video a few days ago when I rescued my feral.
Thank you for this video. I combed the internet and yours has so much great info! I have been feeding a feral cat since the beginning of last Summer. He would not come near me or even watch him eat. Fast forward – one week ago I trapped him and had him neutered. He is now in a large crate with all the necessities. Just 8 days since he’s neutered, he eats in front of me, uses the litter box and approached me for pets! Guess what? This is the first time I’ve ever pet a cat! He is so loving and soft. Today he goes for a full checkup at the vet. How do you know when a cat is ready to be adopted? Unfortunately I am unable to keep him for the long haul. I will keep him and work with him until I find a suitable adopter. Thank you again !!
