Let us know what your thoughts are on Red Rising! Do you have any questions for us?
Why are you not showing us the game?
I just picked this up at Miniature Market for $14. Seems like it’s and under appreciated game.
The books are so good! Before knowing anything about the game, I really thought that the game would be based about starting at the red level and trying to work up the caste system until you reached gold level. This gameplay seems fun too. Excited to try the game out this week!
One of the best book series and audio! This game was very fun!
For the books characters sometimes I'm like " why they look like that " but oh man, when I saw Cassius I'm like " oh yeah. . . that's him. . . that's him nodding in approval "
edit:
-" stuck with what you have " could also be " work with the cards you're dealt with " and that is very much what The Institution is about, you get allocated and alright. . .figure it out, and I mean, I think there's a fair amount of that in the books, making what you can out of the situation
-The Sovereign within the books does hold a good amount of power so it makes sense that the token is weighed with a fair amount of points
-the no " direct interaction " also kinda makes sense from the books, like, there's stuff that happens where it's very much a consequence of actions taken rather than heavy handed, it's a display of soft power
This review tipped me over for this game, and my group loves it. I've since bought two more copies as gifts. Really appreciate your honest reviews!
I very much like the book series, but do not really enjoy Stegmaier designs. This will probably be a game where I play a few times at a game cafe, then never think of it again after the novelty of seeing the illustrations wears off.
Reading the trilogy before playing this really makes the game shine more. I just love the characters so much and the awesome art does them justice.
Coming back to say I'm on book number 3 in the series and Monique, you were absolutely right! So so good and now I'll be purchasing the game soon. I'm curious if you have a favorite character in the books?
I never get analysis paralysis but in this game its been absolutely ridiculous!
Thanks…we are going to be playing next week. Loved the play through too. We really appreciate the play throughs!
The automa totally works in multiplayer as well, as an additional opponent for the players.
Hi guys. First of all great video! I was considering to get this game or fantasy realms as I wanted to try this style of games. Which one would you recommend to play 2 players most of the time?
I think it’s a solid game, need to play it more but I like it so far. I’m a gigantic Jamey fan. Viticulture, Scythe, and Tapestry are all in my top 5. Charterstone is also a fantastic game that I can’t wait to make my own board for!
I don’t think Red Rising will be joining those but who knows, I wasn’t crazy about scythe the first time I played it and now I have scythe art on my walls so maybe I’ll get super into this. I was hoping for more meat but it is fun.
I love his shirt. I want one.
And now I also want to play Fantasy Realms.
I love your shirt! I love giraffes.
I just received my copy the other day and have played it twice with only two players. I would certainly say that the cards became kind of stagnant and very little changed. The weird part was, the bottom cards are kind of hard to get to. I wish there were more options during the turn to expose more cards. Just felt very limited. Will be trying it with 4 players in about a week so we shall see.
Maybe Jamey Stegmeier should stop making asymetric games?
My opinion is, Fantasy realm is good game (besides you like it or not), and has a price arround 20$? THis will cost double at least, with less complexity card-wise but more tracks… I think I wont buy it. I will still waiting for a trully good game from SM, its been a long time since Scythe
I appreciate the comparisons to Fantasy Realms and how in depth you go into strategy/mechanics
You guys should check out the storm light archive edition of Call to adventure.
Would you recommend getting the special edition or wait for the retail?
Love how articulate you both are!! Thank you!
okay so this is my first intoduction to red rising. from your review I can't tell really much. What I got from this is:
This game is bout a class sytem
I can play solo against an automa
the colecters edition is very nice
there are 2 player rules but the game is only 25 minutes long
this is an optimisation game and every game feels different
this game has cubes
after watching this review I have absolutely no clue about this game. This review is like watching an injoke between you two.
Hey guys! Big fan of the Red Rising series here (favourite books ever, read all of the 5 ones :D), before seeing you review I was considering waiting and buying the retail version, but after that, just went on and checked out the preorder. Great overview, much appreciated!!
Question: would you buy this for your own shelf? You mentioned overlap with some other games.
Thanks for the good review – subscribed.
Regarding the house tiles, Jupiter goes up exponentially 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28 then starts going down 34, 39, 43. Whereas Helium is worth 3 for every one: 3, 6, 9 etc. So you would need to progress 5 times on Jupiter's fleet track before you start to make more points than Mars. I think that is actually quite well balanced. You made it sound like you were scoring Jupiter every time you progressed, where in fact you just score once at the end of the game depending how far you have moved up the track.
I can see a place for both FR and RR in a collection. Take care.
Exceptional and honest review. I thought I couldn't like you guys more! I was on the fence so thanks for being honest and saving me some money.
There is so many games now on the market. So if the game is just fun not amazing why we, need spend time for that? There is a lot amazing games around 😄😄😄😄
Thanks for the review! I'm definitely not interested in this game and with so many new releases it's good to be able to weed out the ones that aren't must-haves. 👍
I did not know that this game had come out. I will definitely need to check out the Collector's Edition. While I am not familiar with the theme/books, we always like to check out Stonemaier games. Thanks for the review!
Glad you both found a Fantasy Realms style game that you can both enjoy together. Are the deluxe card holders good?
Yay! Finally got through it and again, appreciate that opening tid bit on the solo mode 😉! Interesting take and appreciate the balanced review as well! Also the added playthrough helps as this games one im in the fence with even though I love Stonemaier and just started the books 😋. Thanks again always love the content!
Thanks for the insightful review. I got Fantasy Realms in 2019 because of Jamey and it was my most played game that year. I am glad to see that Monique, who enjoys that game still likes this one. I love the free app they have to calculate points, perhaps SM will put out one for Red Rising. Also, looking forward to the FR expansion (Cursed Hoard) that is now in pre-order. Cheers.
